Updated July 20269 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Silksong is packed with bosses — 43 unique base-game encounters and even more rematches across its three acts. Some block your path forward, many are optional challenges, and a few are hidden behind quests. This guide lists the major bosses act by act so you can track your progress and know what is coming. It covers base-game content (v1.0.29926); the Sea of Sorrow expansion adds further boss encounters not listed here. Mild boss-name spoilers follow.

Quick answer

Hollow Knight: Silksong has 43 unique bosses in the base game across three acts, with around 18 mandatory for story progression and the rest optional. The Sea of Sorrow expansion (free DLC, coming 2026, not yet released) adds further boss encounters beyond this list. Act 1 builds to the Last Judge, Act 2 climbs the Citadel of Song to Grand Mother Silk, and the opt-in Act 3 ends at the true final boss, Lost Lace. This list orders the major bosses by act with quick tips. Mild boss-name spoilers follow.

01How Boss Progression Works

Silksong's bosses are split across a clear three-act structure:

02Act 1 Bosses

Act 1 introduces the core challenge curve and ends at a major gatekeeper. Key bosses include:

The Last Judge is the wall most players hit first — see our dedicated Last Judge guide for the full strategy.

03Act 2 Bosses

Act 2 takes you up into the Citadel of Song, with tougher, more elaborate fights:

How you approach the Grand Mother Silk fight matters for the ending you get — completing the Act 3 unlock quest beforehand is what opens the true path. See our endings guide for details.

04Act 3 Bosses

Act 3 is the opt-in finale, set in a corrupted version of Pharloom, and contains the hardest fights:

Lost Lace is the toughest fight in the game and the gateway to the true ending — our Lost Lace guide covers it in full (with spoilers).

05Optional Bosses & Colosseum

Beyond the story path, plenty of bosses reward exploration:

FAQ

How many bosses are in Silksong?

Hollow Knight: Silksong has 43 unique bosses in the base game, with a few rematches pushing the total number of fights higher. Around 18 are mandatory for story progression, and the rest are optional challenges, hidden bosses, or quest-related encounters spread across the game's three acts. The Colosseum Trials add escalating arena gauntlets as the base game's boss-rush equivalent. The Sea of Sorrow expansion (free DLC, coming 2026, not yet released) adds further boss encounters not counted here — check the official wiki for a complete post-expansion list.

Who is the final boss of Silksong?

The Act 2 finale is Grand Mother Silk, which leads to the default ending. The true final boss is Lost Lace, fought in the opt-in Act 3, which you only reach by completing the Act 3 unlock quest first. Many players finish the game at Grand Mother Silk without ever accessing Act 3 or facing Lost Lace, so the true ending is missable.

What is the hardest boss in Silksong?

Lost Lace, the true final boss in Act 3, is widely considered the hardest fight in the base game and gates the true ending. Earlier walls include the Last Judge at the end of Act 1 and several Act 3 challenge bosses like Crust King Khann. Difficulty has shifted with patches — Team Cherry eased some early bosses such as Sister Splinter after launch.

Are all Silksong bosses mandatory?

No. Only around 18 of the 43 base-game bosses are required to progress the story. The rest are optional — hidden world bosses, quest-related fights, and the Colosseum Trials. Many optional bosses reward Tools, currency, or upgrades, so they are worth seeking out, but you can finish a standard playthrough without beating all of them. Act 3 and its bosses are entirely opt-in. The Sea of Sorrow expansion adds further bosses in a separate content area.
