How to Respec Your Passive Tree in Path of Exile 2

Unlike Path of Exile 1, Path of Exile 2 respec uses gold — not Orbs of Regret. You can refund passive points at any time through the Hooded One in town, with costs scaling based on your character level and how deep the node sits in the tree. Early-game experimentation is intentionally affordable; full endgame rebuilds cost significantly more. Here is everything you need to manage it wisely.

01How the Respec System Works (Gold, Not Orbs)

Path of Exile 2 replaces PoE1's Orbs of Regret with a gold-based refund system. Gold is the game's vendor currency — earned by selling items to town merchants and found as drops. Because gold has few other major uses, the system gives you a natural resource specifically for passive experimentation.

There is no free full reset by default. Every refund costs gold, but the system is designed so small, targeted respecs remain accessible throughout the campaign. A complete overhaul at endgame levels is expensive and requires planning your gold reserves.

• Normal passive points — cost scales with character level, from single-digit gold per point early on to well over 10,000 gold per point by level 100.
• Ascendancy passive points — cost five times a normal passive point at the same level. Refund these only when necessary.
• Attribute nodes — cost roughly half a normal point refund, and unlike ordinary nodes they can be swapped directly without needing to refund an entire outer chain first.

02How to Refund Passive Points Step by Step

The refund interface becomes available once you meet the Hooded One in Act 1 (first encountered in the Grelwood) and complete the short quest chain tied to that NPC — this typically wraps up well before you finish the campaign, so most players have respec access from early on.

1. Travel to any town where the Hooded One is present — she remains available in every subsequent act and in your endgame hideout access points.
2. Speak to the Hooded One and select the Refund Passives option.
3. Your passive tree opens in refund mode. Select a node to remove — the gold cost displays before you confirm.
4. Confirm the refund. The point returns to your unspent pool and the gold is deducted.
5. Repeat for each node, then spend the freed points on your new path. If you have enough gold, a Refund All Passives option (added in an Early Access update) lets you reset your entire allocated tree in one action instead of clicking node by node.
6. Close the tree — your character updates immediately, no restart required.

Important constraint: ordinary passive nodes can only be refunded from the outer edge of your current allocation — if removing a node would disconnect other allocated nodes from your starting point, the game blocks it, so work inward from the outermost nodes one step at a time. Attribute nodes are the exception: they can be swapped directly without unwinding the rest of the chain first.

03Understanding Gold Cost Scaling

The single biggest mistake new players make is ignoring how steeply respec costs grow. A point that costs single-digit gold early in the campaign can cost well over 10,000 gold per node by character level 100.

• Campaign levels (1–50): respecs are cheap — experiment freely and test different passive paths before committing.
• Early endgame (51–75): costs become noticeable for full rebuilds, but partial respecs of 10–20 points stay affordable if you keep a gold reserve.
• Deep endgame (76–100): individual node refunds run into the thousands of gold each, and community estimates put a large-scale respec at level 95+ in the hundreds of thousands of gold. Save gold deliberately if a rebuild is planned.
• Ascendancy point refunds cost five times a normal node — treat them as major decisions, not casual experiments.
• Grinding Gear Games has already cut respec costs once during Early Access (patch 0.1.0e), flattening the curve so late-campaign/early-endgame refunds cost roughly 40–50% less gold than at launch — so the numbers above already reflect that reduction, not the original harsher curve.

04How to Farm Gold Efficiently for Respecs

Gold drops from monsters and chests, but the most reliable source is selling items to town vendors. Keeping a habit of selling magic and rare items you cannot use funds your respec budget over time.

• Sell everything you do not equip or trade. Magic and rare items often sell for meaningful gold each; a single map run can generate thousands from vendor sales alone.
• Do not hoard currency items you never plan to use if they have no trade value for your build.
• Run content slightly below your power level when farming gold — clearing maps quickly generates more vendor fodder per hour than struggling through harder content.
• Prioritise gold before a planned respec, not after. Decide the rebuild, estimate the cost, then farm that amount before visiting the Hooded One.

05Respeccing Ascendancy Points

Ascendancy points sit inside the passive tree as a separate small cluster tied to your chosen Ascendancy class. They follow the same refund rules — remove from the outermost point inward — but at five times the gold cost of a normal point at the same level. Changing your Ascendancy class entirely is not possible without a new character; refunding ascendancy points only lets you reallocate within the same Ascendancy.

1. Estimate the total gold cost before starting — Ascendancy refunds are the most expensive single action in the respec system.
2. If testing an Ascendancy path, spend only one or two points first and evaluate synergy before committing deeper.
3. Remove Ascendancy nodes the same way as normal nodes: speak to the Hooded One, enter refund mode, click the outermost node, and confirm.
4. After freeing the points, re-enter the Ascendancy tree to allocate them on your new path.

Because Ascendancy refunds cost so much gold, it pays to research your choices thoroughly before allocating. Check proven endgame builds for your class first — a small investment in planning saves enormous amounts of gold later.

06Smart Respec Habits That Save Gold

The gold respec system rewards players who plan ahead:

• Plan your passive path before spending points. Changing direction mid-campaign costs far less than reversing endgame allocations.
• Refund only what you must. If only the last 15 nodes need to change, do not refund 40 nodes and re-allocate the same early path.
• Keep a minimum gold reserve in early endgame so you can adjust a build without halting progress to farm.
• Never refund immediately after a patch. Read the full notes first — a node that looks broken may be getting buffed in the same update.
• Respeccing attributes is cheaper — reclaim attribute nodes first (at lower cost) when shifting gear stat requirements.
