Path of Exile 2 Currency Explained

Path of Exile 2 has no gold. Instead, every currency item is also a crafting material — the same orb you use to reroll an item's stats is the same orb another player wants to buy from you. Understanding this dual purpose is the single most important concept in the entire economy.

01Why There Is No Gold

Most ARPGs use gold as a neutral middleman — you sell loot for gold, then spend gold on upgrades. Path of Exile 2 skips that layer entirely. Every item you pick up that looks like "currency" is simultaneously useful for modifying gear and accepted as payment by other players.

The philosophy behind this is deliberate: it means every orb you find has real weight to it. You are never just picking up pocket change. When you find a powerful orb, you are holding either a meaningful crafting tool or something another player genuinely wants. That tension — use it or trade it — is at the heart of the game's economy.

02How Orbs and Currency Work

Different currency items do different things to equipment. As a general rule:

• Some orbs add or change modifiers on magic-rarity items — useful early in a character's life when you are still gearing up.
• Some orbs replace a single modifier on a rare item randomly — note that in Path of Exile 2, the Chaos Orb swaps out one modifier rather than rerolling the entire item, making it more surgical than its counterpart in the original game.
• Some orbs upgrade item rarity, moving a normal item to magic, or a magic item to rare, unlocking more modifier slots.
• Some orbs work on skill gems, not gear — Jeweller's Orbs (Lesser, Greater, and Perfect variants) add support sockets directly to a skill gem. A separate item, the Artificer's Orb, adds sockets to equipment pieces like armour or weapons.
• Some orbs are used for maps (endgame content), modifying difficulty and rewards rather than equipment directly.

You do not need to memorise what every orb does before you start playing. The game describes each one in its tooltip. The more important lesson is to recognise that they are all valuable in different contexts — none of them are junk.

03The Golden Rule: Do Not Waste Valuable Orbs Early

This is the most common mistake new players make. Early in the campaign, gear gets replaced constantly. Using a high-value orb to craft a piece of armour you will discard ten zones later is a real loss. There are a few practical habits that will save you a lot of frustration:

• Hold your most powerful orbs until you are in the endgame and know what item you are actually trying to build around. The endgame is where crafting investment pays off.
• Use lower-tier currency freely when you need a quick improvement — the small stuff is abundant and exists to be spent.
• Do not vendor items for scraps of currency just to feel like you are earning something. An unidentified rare item might be worth trading to another player for something more useful.
• Identify everything before deciding to sell or trash it. Rares with the right combination of modifiers can be surprisingly valuable.

The general principle is simple: if you do not know what something does or what it is worth, keep it until you do. Hoarding is safer than burning through currency you cannot get back.

04Currency as Trade: How the Player Economy Works

Because everyone uses the same orbs, a natural exchange rate develops between them. Some orbs are common and low in value; others are rare and command a significant price. Players trade by offering stacks of less valuable currency for a stack of more valuable currency, or by paying currency for a specific piece of gear they need. In practice, Exalted Orbs function as the fractional unit for everyday transactions, while Divine Orbs serve as the premium denomination for high-end trades — though exact rates shift with each league and patch.

Trading in Path of Exile 2 is largely player-driven. There is an official trade site where players list items for sale at prices denominated in specific orbs. When you want to buy something, you find the listing, message the seller, and meet in-game to exchange. It sounds cumbersome, but once you understand the relative value of each orb type, it becomes second nature.

As a newcomer, you do not need to dive into trading immediately. The campaign is completable without it. But knowing the system exists helps you make better decisions about what to pick up and what to leave on the ground.

05Scrolls and Small Utility Currency

Not every currency item is a powerful orb. There are humbler items that handle basic housekeeping:

• Identification scrolls reveal the hidden modifiers on unidentified items. You will use these constantly. They drop frequently and are always worth picking up.
• Portal scrolls (or their equivalent) let you return to town quickly. Again, common and always useful.
• Waystones are used to activate endgame maps, each one opening a new area with its own modifiers and rewards.

These smaller items form the backbone of your day-to-day play. Do not overlook them; running out of identification scrolls when you are deep in a map is genuinely annoying.

06What to Pick Up — Practical Loot Filter Advice

Path of Exile 2 drops an enormous amount of loot. Without a loot filter, the screen becomes unreadable noise. Most experienced players configure a filter that highlights currency items of all types, rare equipment in slots they care about, and any unique items. Everything else gets hidden or shown in small text.

For currency specifically: pick up everything that has a name and a description. Even the orbs that seem minor add up in bulk and can be exchanged for something more useful. The only items you can reasonably skip are the most common low-level scraps once you have accumulated a comfortable buffer of them.

As your knowledge grows, you will develop instincts about which orbs you are swimming in and which you should hoard carefully. Early on, lean toward picking up more rather than less — you can always convert excess smaller currency into something bigger through trading.
