How to Catch Legendary Pals in Palworld
Legendary Pals are the rarest, most powerful creatures on Palpagos Islands. Each is a fixed-world boss at a specific location, and a single failed run can cost a stack of precious spheres. This guide covers every core mechanic — HP thresholds, status effects, sphere tiers, the back-attack bonus, and permanent capture-rate upgrades — plus where each legendary roams.
Weaken the legendary Pal to red HP, apply one or two status effects (freeze, stun, or burn), then throw a top-tier sphere (Legendary, Ultimate, or Exotic) from behind for the highest capture chance. Legendaries are fixed level 50–60 spawns, so bring dozens of high-tier spheres and max out the Statue of Power with Lifmunk Effigies first. Frostallion Noct is the only one obtained by breeding rather than catching.
01Understanding Capture Mechanics
Every capture rolls against a hidden capture probability set by four stacking factors: the target's remaining HP, active status effects, the sphere's base power, and the throw angle. Legendaries have an extremely low base capture rate and are level 50–60, so you need all four factors working together. Throwing an Ultra Sphere with no status effect can easily sit below 5% per throw.
The system rewards patience — taking 30 seconds to apply a second status effect is almost always worth more than burning ten extra spheres without one.
02Step-by-Step Capture Method
Follow this sequence every time. Order matters — rushing a throw wastes spheres, while letting the Pal kill your party resets the encounter.
- Clear the area of nearby mobs that can interfere.
- Whittle HP to red (roughly 20–25%) with a mid-power weapon or a Pal with type advantage, then stop attacking to avoid an accidental kill.
- Apply status effects — stack at least two: a freeze or stun to stop movement, then poison or burn for an ongoing debuff. Each active status boosts capture rate independently.
- Position behind the Pal — a rear throw grants a meaningful flat bonus over a frontal one at the same HP.
- Throw your best sphere — use Exotic, Ultimate, or Legendary Spheres only; lower tiers have near-zero success at this level.
- Repeat immediately, reapplying status before each throw since it wears off quickly.
03Permanent Catch-Rate Upgrades
Before hunting any legendary, invest in upgrades that apply to every future capture:
- Statue of Power + Lifmunk Effigies: offering Effigies permanently raises your Pal capture rate. Max this — it is the highest-impact pre-hunt upgrade.
- Player level and tech: Legendary Spheres unlock in the mid-40s and need an upgraded Sphere Assembly Line. Do not attempt legendaries until you can stockpile top-tier spheres reliably.
- Sphere stockpile: bring at least 50 high-tier spheres per legendary; experienced players carry 80–100 to absorb bad-luck streaks.
- Gear: a Stun Baton applies stun from melee for a reliable first status; follow with a Pal that inflicts freeze, poison, or burn.
04All Legendary Pal Locations
All legendaries are fixed-world spawns that respawn after a cooldown if defeated without a catch. Coordinates are approximate and patches can shift them slightly.
- Jetragon (Dragon): roams the volcanic Mount Obsidian in the far southwest. The fastest flying mount in the game and one of the most sought-after catches. Weak to Ice.
- Frostallion (Ice): near the frozen lake in the far-north Astral Mountains. Use Fire Pals to exploit its weakness without overkilling.
- Paladius (Neutral) and Necromus (Dark): share a spawn in the northern Desiccated Desert and often appear together — be ready to manage both or kite one away. Dragon Pals counter Necromus.
- Frostallion Noct (Dark): cannot be caught wild — it is obtained by breeding a Frostallion with a Helzephyr.
- Blazamut (Fire): inside the Scorching Mineshaft in the western volcanic region; the dungeon limits movement, so bring ranged status effects.
The v1.0 update (July 2026) expanded the Pal roster to 287 total and added new wild Pals in the Sunreach and World Tree endgame zones — including Shaolong, which spawns as a catchable wild legendary in Sunreach. The World Tree's boss encounter (Zenara & Astralym, ~Lv 80) is fought like a tower boss and Astralym cannot be caught; it is registered to your Paldex only upon defeat. Cross-reference an up-to-date community map for current spawn locations, as 1.0 adjusted some coordinates on the original map as well.
05Sphere Tier Guide for Legendaries
Choosing the wrong sphere is the most common reason players burn hundreds of attempts:
- Ultra Sphere: the highest standard sphere; acceptable in a pinch but weak against level-60 legendaries.
- Legendary Sphere: unlocked in the mid-40s; a solid all-round choice with strong base power.
- Exotic / Ultimate Sphere: widely regarded as the best for legendary-tier targets, outperforming the standard Legendary Sphere in most real capture scenarios.
- Avoid Giga, Mega, and anything below Ultra — near-zero success at level 60 regardless of HP or status.
06Breeding Legendaries and the Legend Passive
Catching a legendary is not always the end of the journey.
Same-species breeding: most legendaries can only be bred by pairing two of the same species (e.g. male + female Jetragon), so you must catch one wild first. The exception is Frostallion Noct, produced by crossing Frostallion with Helzephyr.
The Legend passive: legendaries carry the powerful Legend passive (big boosts to Attack, Defense, and movement). Once you own one, you can breed it with other Pals to pass Legend down the line — even non-legendary species can inherit it through multi-generation chains. Catching the legendary is step one; building around it is where the real endgame begins.
FAQ
What is the best sphere to catch legendary Pals?
The Exotic Sphere is generally the strongest option, edging out the standard Legendary Sphere in practical capture scenarios; Ultimate Spheres are a close backup. Avoid anything below Ultra Sphere — the catch rates are too low against level 50–60 legendary targets even with status effects and low HP.
Does attacking from behind really improve capture chances?
Yes. A rear throw gives a flat capture bonus over a frontal throw under identical conditions. Combined with red-bar HP and two active status effects, the cumulative improvement is significant, so it is worth repositioning every time rather than spamming spheres from the front.
Can legendaries be bred without catching one first?
For Jetragon, Frostallion, Paladius, and Necromus you must catch one wild before breeding, since they breed same-species only. The exception is Frostallion Noct, produced by breeding Frostallion with Helzephyr. Once you own any legendary, you can breed it to pass the powerful Legend passive down to other Pals.
Do legendaries respawn if I kill them instead of catching them?
Yes — legendaries respawn at their fixed points after a cooldown, so killing one without catching it is not permanent. Return to the same location after the cooldown and it should reappear, letting you refine your strategy for the next attempt.
