Mortal Shell 2 Shell Tier List — Best Shell for Every Playstyle
Mortal Shell 2 launched under two weeks ago, and it shows in how much its Shell tier lists disagree with each other. Cross-referencing the major guide sites turns up unanimous agreement on exactly one Shell and genuine three-way splits on several others. Rather than pick one outlet's list and present it as gospel, here's what's actually settled, what's still contested, and which Shell fits your playstyle regardless of where the meta lands.
Mortal Shell 2 has 8 permanently usable Shells (Harros the Vassal, your prologue Shell, is lost for good). Genessa is the one Shell every major tier list agrees belongs at the top, thanks to her clone-summoning kit. Past that, rankings genuinely conflict between outlets — this guide is upfront about which Shells are contested and recommends by playstyle instead of pretending there's a single settled list.
01How Shells Work
Shells are Mortal Shell 2's classes — each one carries its own stats, abilities, and combat identity, not just a cosmetic reskin. You can switch between any Shell you've recovered freely at Marrow Keep or any activated Beacon in the field, with no cooldown and no penalty, so trying a Shell before committing your upgrade materials to it costs you nothing but time.
Finding a new Shell isn't automatic — for seven of the eight permanent Shells, you first spend Gloom, an in-game currency, to reveal its map location, then complete that Shell's Memory sequence to add it to your roster permanently. Genessa is the one exception: she isn't found through Gloom at all, but by defeating the hidden boss Sester Secundus and completing her own Memory sequence afterward.
02Why Harros Doesn't Count
You start Mortal Shell 2 in Harros the Vassal, a balanced melee Shell built around a two-handed blade and an explosive sidearm. Harros is permanently lost partway through the story regardless of how that section goes, so every tier list — including this one — excludes him. If you're wondering why your prologue Shell vanished, that's expected, not a bug.
03The One Shell Every List Agrees On: Genessa
Genessa (Sester Genessa), the gold-armored Shell found later in the game, is the single point of real consensus across every major tier list — Game8, TheGamer, KeenGamer, and GameRant all place her at S-tier. Her kit centers on summoning Faithful Doubles, clones of herself that split enemy attention and add independent damage, which is unusually strong against the single-target bosses that make up most of the game's difficulty spikes.
If you only take one thing from a tier list this early in a game's life, it's this: pick up Genessa and give her a real chance before writing her off.
04The Contested Middle — Where Guides Disagree
Past Genessa, the picture gets messy fast. The same four tier lists that agree on Genessa rank several other Shells anywhere from S-tier to C-tier depending on the outlet:
- Smert and Gragu swing between S-tier and B-tier across different guides — both are aggressive, high-damage picks that reward good execution, but outlets clearly disagree on how forgiving they are for average play.
- Lazlo, built around high HP and damage-reduction armor, ranges from A-tier down to C-tier. The disagreement likely comes down to how much outlets weight raw survivability against the slower pace it usually means in exchange.
- Proxima gets described differently almost everywhere you look — a mobility-and-hybrid-damage kit by some accounts, a tankier utility pick by others. Until the community settles on what her kit is actually best at, treat any specific claim about her playstyle with some skepticism.
- Sariel consistently lands in the lower-middle across lists. Her kit revolves around a Pain mechanic that converts incoming damage into recoverable 'grey health' instead of permanent loss — primarily a survivability tool rather than a damage-booster — but it's a complex, investment-heavy build — most guides agree she rewards a specific playstyle rather than working well as a generalist pick.
None of this means those Shells are weak — it means the meta for a game this new hasn't settled, and several guides explicitly say as much themselves. Treat any tier list you read (including this section) as one outlet's opinion rather than a verified fact.
05Best Shell by Playstyle
- New to the game: Eredrim and Tiel are the two Shells beginner guides converge on most consistently. Eredrim's heavy armor and high stagger resistance forgive mistakes while you're still learning enemy patterns; Tiel's near-permanent invisibility on a perfect dodge gives you a safety net in tough 1v1s without requiring deep system mastery.
- Boss fights and posture breaking: Eredrim specializes in Break damage against bosses specifically — if a fight is dragging on because you can't force an opening, switching to Eredrim for that boss is a common and effective tactic, not a crutch.
- Aggressive, summon-based play: Genessa's Faithful Doubles make her the strongest pick for splitting boss attention and adding damage without exposing yourself further, which is why she's the tier list's one point of agreement.
- Stealth and agility: Tiel's dodge-triggered invisibility and dual-wield speed suit players who'd rather out-position enemies than trade hits directly.
- High-investment, damage-conversion builds: Sariel rewards players willing to commit the Glimpses her kit needs to come online — not a first pick, but worth trying once you have upgrade materials to spare.
06Patch Watch
Mortal Shell 2's Week 1 Update (August 29, 2026) reworked riposte scaling, individually adjusted 16 bosses, and — notably for Shell builds — removed the run-wide cap on Glimpses and Tarcores, so you're no longer forced to commit permanently to just one or two Shells the way earlier guidance suggested. The same update added Mether's Severance, which can reset a Shell and refund the Glimpses spent on it if you want to change your build later. No patch so far has specifically buffed or nerfed an individual Shell's kit — balance changes to date have targeted bosses, weapons, and enemy health instead.
FAQ
How many Shells are there in Mortal Shell 2?
Nine total, but only eight are permanently usable: Tiel, Proxima, Eredrim, Gragu, Smert, Lazlo, Sariel, and Genessa. The ninth, Harros the Vassal, is your prologue Shell and is lost permanently partway through the story.
What is the best Shell in Mortal Shell 2?
Genessa is the closest thing to a settled answer — she's the only Shell every major tier list ranks S-tier, thanks to her Faithful Doubles clone-summoning kit. Past her, rankings genuinely conflict between outlets, so 'best' depends more on your playstyle than on any single tier list.
Can you keep your starting Shell, Harros?
No. Harros the Vassal is permanently lost partway through Mortal Shell 2's story regardless of how that section plays out. Every tier list, including this one, excludes him from rankings for that reason.
What is the best Shell for beginners in Mortal Shell 2?
Eredrim and Tiel are the two most consistently recommended beginner picks. Eredrim's heavy armor and stagger resistance forgive mistakes while you learn enemy patterns, while Tiel's perfect-dodge invisibility gives a safety net in tough fights without requiring deep system knowledge.
Can you switch Shells freely, or is it a permanent choice?
You can switch freely at Marrow Keep or any activated Beacon, with no cooldown or penalty. Since the Week 1 Update removed the run-wide cap on Glimpses and Tarcores, you're also no longer limited to fully upgrading just one or two Shells across a playthrough.
