How to Beat Arkveld in Monster Hunter Wilds

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Arkveld is the flagship monster of Monster Hunter Wilds — an ancient flying wyvern once thought extinct, wielding chain-like appendages that absorb elemental energy and convert it into devastating Dragon-element attacks. You face it as the climax of the High Rank campaign and again as Tempered and, in Title Update 4, as the pinnacle Arch-Tempered variant. This guide covers its weaknesses, every major attack pattern, how to exploit Wounds with Focus Mode, and what gear to bring so you stop fainting and start farming.

01Where and When You Fight Arkveld

Arkveld first appears as a story encounter in Chapter 5 — the quest "Awaking from a Dream" at Hunter Rank 40, set in the Windward Plains after the creature defeats a Rey Dau. This fight is mandatory and serves as the final High Rank climax.

After the campaign, Arkveld roams freely across all five biomes (Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest, Oilwell Basin, Iceshard Cliffs, and Ruins of Wyveria) in optional and event quests. Its ecology labels it an apex predator — expect turf wars with nine other large monsters whenever it shares a zone.

Title Update 4 (February 2026) added Arch-Tempered Arkveld as a permanent 10★ event quest — currently the hardest fight in the game, requiring Hunter Rank 100 and fully augmented Rarity 8 gear. See the final section for AT-specific tips.

02Weaknesses and Status Vulnerabilities

Understanding Arkveld's damage profile before you choose a weapon saves wasted hunts:

03Arkveld's Key Attacks and How to Read Them

Arkveld's chainblades are both its primary weapons and its identity — every dangerous attack telegraphs through those appendages:

The sides and rear flanks are consistently the safest positions. Avoid standing directly in front or behind at distance — both directions are covered by chainblade reach.

04Focus Mode and Wounds: Where to Hit Arkveld

If you are not yet comfortable with the Wound system, read the Focus Mode and Wounds guide first. Against Arkveld, the system is especially rewarding because its best Wound targets overlap with parts that also have the highest hitzones.

Priority Wound targets:

  1. Chainblades (top priority): The chainblades are both the best physical hitzone and the source of Arkveld's most dangerous attacks. Opening Wounds here and popping them with a Focus Strike staggers the monster hard and can interrupt the Red Lightning Blast. When both chainblades are destroyed, Arkveld is guaranteed to topple — this is the best free-damage window in the entire fight.
  2. Head (second priority): High hitzone on sever and blunt weapons. Head Wounds combine a Focus Strike topple with the break bonus, which also yields extra rare materials.
  3. Wings and tail: Good for ranged weapons and fast multi-hit weapons. Tail severance shortens Arkveld's tail-swipe reach.

Use Focus Mode between combos to scan for glowing Wounds rather than staying locked in it continuously — Arkveld moves fast and you need mobility. Time your Focus Strike during one of the downtime windows: after a topple from destroyed chainblades, during a roar, or after successfully countering a lash combo.

Because each Wound location can only scar once per hunt, plan your order: chainblades first to break the dangerous enraged attacks, then head for part-farming, then wings and tail.

05Recommended Build and Equipment

See the Best Armor Builds guide for full endgame set details. For Arkveld specifically, prioritise these choices:

06Phase-by-Phase Fight Breakdown

Opening phase (full health): Arkveld tests your positioning with chainblade lashes and moderate combos. This is the window to build Wounds on the chainblades safely. Its aggression is manageable — use Focus Mode freely to check for the first Wounds forming. Paralysis at this stage gives the entire party a free extended combo window.

Enraged phase (roughly 60–70% HP): Arkveld's chainblades ignite and combos lengthen. The Unleashed State triggers when the chainblades finish charging — the priority now is to dump burst damage onto the chainblades to break them and cancel the Unleashed State, resetting to a safer phase. A well-timed Focus Strike on an open chainblade Wound here causes a knockdown and exits the enrage.

Final phase (below ~30% HP): Arkveld becomes consistently enraged and the Red Lightning Blast fires more frequently. Use Flash Pods to cancel flying attacks. Maintain flanking position, be conservative about greed hits, and use any Paralysis procs remaining in your weapon for final burst damage. If you saved any chainblade Wounds for this phase, pop them with Focus Strikes to secure the kill window.

For multiplayer, coordinate Wounds — have one hunter build a chainblade Wound while others apply stagger, then call a Focus Strike simultaneously. See the weapon upgrade guide to make sure your Dragon-element weapon is fully sharpened before the attempt.

07Arch-Tempered Arkveld (Title Update 4, Feb 2026)

Arch-Tempered Arkveld is available as a permanent 10★ event quest from Title Update 4 (Ver. 1.041, February 18, 2026). It requires Hunter Rank 100 and is the hardest fight currently in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Key differences from base Arkveld:

Recommended mandatory skills for AT Arkveld: Health Boost Lv 3, Blight Resistance Lv 3, Stun Resistance Lv 3, Focus Boost Lv 5. The chest becomes a permanent Wound in the second zone — prioritise Focus Strikes there for doubled Wound Exploit damage.

FAQ

What is Arkveld weak to in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Arkveld is only weak to Dragon element — no other element (Fire, Water, Thunder, Ice) deals any elemental bonus damage. For status effects, Paralysis is the strongest choice and can proc multiple times per hunt, giving long windows of free damage. Poison and Blast are also effective. Always bring Nulberries to counter Dragonblight, which strips your weapon's Dragon element.

What are the best parts to hit on Arkveld?

Chainblades and the head are the top hitzones for all damage types. Chainblades deal the best physical hitzone values and are also the source of Arkveld's most dangerous attacks — destroying them triggers a guaranteed topple. Wings and tail are strong secondaries, especially for ranged weapons. Avoid wasting hits on the torso and legs, which have low hitzone values.

How do I stop Arkveld's chainblade attacks?

Target the chainblades consistently and build Wounds on them using Focus Mode. Opening a Wound on a chainblade and popping it with a Focus Strike stuns Arkveld and can interrupt the Red Lightning Blast before it fires. When you destroy both chainblades, Arkveld topples — this is the longest free-damage window in the fight. Flash Pods also knock it out of flying sweep attacks.

When does Arkveld appear in the story, and can I farm it after?

Arkveld is the mandatory final High Rank boss encountered in Chapter 5's 'Awaking from a Dream' quest at Hunter Rank 40, set in the Windward Plains. After completing that quest, Arkveld appears in optional quests and roams all five biomes. Tempered Arkveld spawns in High Rank optional quests and drops rare materials including Hunter Symbol III. Arch-Tempered Arkveld unlocks at HR 100 via a Title Update 4 event quest.

Is Arch-Tempered Arkveld worth farming?

Yes — AT Arkveld drops Arkveld Condensed Dark Materials needed for the Arkveld γ armor set, which has one of the best skill loadouts in the game including Critical Boost and the Lord Soul bonus (5% attack aura for the party in multiplayer). It also rewards Battle-tempered Emblems for weapon reinforcement. Expect a serious time investment: the 10★ difficulty and HR 100 requirement mean it is purely an endgame farming target, not a progression step.
