GTA 5 Stock Market Guide — Make Billions with Lester's Missions

The GTA 5 stock market is the single most lucrative money-making method in story mode — and it is almost entirely tied to five assassination missions from Lester. Done correctly with all three protagonists holding maximum cash, the Lester missions can turn a few hundred thousand dollars into over $2 billion combined across Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. This guide explains how the stock market works and gives you the exact investment strategy.

01How the GTA 5 Stock Market Works

GTA 5 has two separate stock exchanges:

• LCN (Liberty City National): Single-player only. Stock prices here are directly influenced by story events, assassinations, and some in-game actions. This is the exchange relevant to Lester's missions. Because it is single-player, you control the manipulation.
• BAWSAQ: Influenced by the aggregate behaviour of all GTA Online players. Prices fluctuate based on the weapons, vehicles, and products players are buying across the global player base. BAWSAQ is essentially unpredictable and not reliably manipulable in the same way as LCN.

Access both exchanges via your in-game phone, under the Money and Services section in the browser. The home screen shows your portfolio and available cash. Buy shares by selecting a stock ticker and choosing how many shares to purchase.

Stock prices update in real time as you play. The market does not advance while your phone is open — you can safely open the stock page to check prices mid-game without time passing. To advance time in GTA 5, either play missions, sleep at a safe house, or simply walk/drive around.

02The Lester Assassination Strategy (The Right Order)

Lester offers Franklin five assassination missions. The critical rule: only complete the first assassination (The Hotel Assassination) when the game requires it for story progression. Save the other four for after the final heist.

Here is why: after the final heist, all three characters — Michael, Trevor, and Franklin — hold maximum story-mode cash (tens of millions each). Investing that full capital before an assassination and selling at peak multiplies your returns by 50–100x compared to doing the assassinations with limited mid-story funds.

The five assassinations and their stock plays:

• 1. The Hotel Assassination (story required): Before the mission, invest ALL available cash in BettaPharmaceuticals (BAWSAQ). Complete the mission. Betta rockets up. Sell for maximum profit, then invest the proceeds in Bilkinton Research (LCN) — which drops after Betta rises. Hold Bilkinton for several days and sell when it recovers.
• 2. The Multi-Target Assassination: Before the mission, invest in Debonaire Cigarettes (LCN). Complete the mission. Sell Debonaire at peak (~80% gain). Then buy Redwood Cigarettes (LCN), which has cratered. Hold for several days — Redwood recovers to pre-crisis levels, yielding another ~300% return.
• 3. The Vice Assassination: Before the mission, invest in Fruit Computers (BAWSAQ). Complete the mission. Sell Fruit at peak. Then buy Facade (BAWSAQ), which drops when Fruit rises.
• 4. The Bus Assassination: Before the mission, invest in Vapid Motor Company (BAWSAQ). Complete the mission. Sell at peak. No counter-investment on this one.
• 5. The Construction Assassination: Before the mission, invest in Gold Coast Development (LCN). Complete the mission. Gold Coast surges dramatically. Sell at peak for the largest single gain of all five missions.

03Timing the Sell: When to Exit Each Position

Selling at the right moment is as important as buying before the mission. Stock prices peak and then decay over in-game time. The practical approach:

• After each mission, save your game and watch the stock in real time. Stock prices update as time passes — walk around, sleep at a safe house, or simply wait.
• Most stocks peak within 72–96 in-game hours after the assassination. One in-game day is approximately 48 real-time minutes. Sleeping fast-forwards time efficiently.
• Use the 'Sleep' option at each character's safe house to advance time. Swap between Michael, Trevor, and Franklin (each sleeps a different length: Trevor sleeps 12 hours, Michael 8, Franklin 6) to fine-tune your time advancement.
• Check prices after each time skip. When a stock has clearly peaked and started to fall, sell immediately. Do not wait for the 'perfect' peak — a day past peak can erase significant gains.
• The Redwood Cigarettes recovery after the Multi-Target mission takes longer — up to a full in-game week. Be patient with this one specifically; it is a slow recovery.

04Maximising the Final Heist Capital

To get maximum returns from the post-heist assassination missions, you need all three characters to hold as much cash as possible. Before the assassinations:

• Complete The Big Score (the final heist) first. This gives all three characters millions. Do not spend any of it.
• Do not buy any properties or businesses you do not need. Properties absorb cash that could go into stocks. Complete all assassinations before buying optional properties.
• Switch between Michael, Trevor, and Franklin before each mission to invest all three characters' cash in the correct stock. All three need to buy in — only Franklin's cash buys stock if you forget the others.
• Approximate maximum returns (all three characters, perfect timing): after completing all five assassinations in order with full post-heist capital, total combined wealth for all three characters can approach $2 billion.

05Other Stock Tips in GTA 5

Beyond Lester's missions, here are the ways to influence stock prices outside the assassination chain:

• Vandalism / business disruption (LCN only): Destroying a company's vehicles, equipment, or property lowers their LCN stock price. Buy competitor stock first, then destroy target company assets, then sell competitor stock after it rises. This is very small-scale compared to assassination missions.
• Random Events: Some random events on the world map are linked to stock price changes. The 'Stock Market Assassination' hints in the game's newspaper inserts reference specific random events with stock consequences — these are minor in impact.
• BAWSAQ responds to spending patterns: If a significant portion of GTA Online players are buying a specific vehicle or weapon, the manufacturer's BAWSAQ stock may rise. This is not reliable or controllable for a single player.
• Check the Vanilla Unicorn nightclub investment: After purchasing it during the story, Michael's personal share pays passive income through the business side-mission chain. Small relative to stock manipulation but consistent.
