GTA Online Beginner's Guide — First Steps & First Million
GTA Online has been running since 2013 and has grown into a vast, content-dense multiplayer world that can feel completely overwhelming the first time you land at Los Santos Airport. This guide is built for complete newcomers: what the tutorial teaches you (and what it skips), how to earn your first meaningful income, what to buy first, how to survive griefers, and which long-term activities actually pay off.
Complete the GTA Online tutorial, grab the free Elegy RH8 from the in-game browser, and start earning money through Contact Missions and Daily Objectives. Your first major purchase should be a low-cost apartment to access heists. The Cayo Perico Heist is the best repeatable money grind once you're established.
01The Tutorial — What to Expect
GTA Online begins with a brief intro sequence at Los Santos Airport, followed by a phone call from Lamar Davis. He takes you through a race and a deathmatch that together form the basic tutorial. These take about 15–20 minutes and introduce driving, weapons, and the session structure.
After the tutorial you land in a free-roam session — an open world shared with up to 29 other players. This is where GTA Online actually begins. A few things to know immediately:
- Your character is permanent. Unlike story mode's three protagonists, you create one (or two, with a second slot) custom character. Your level, money, properties, and vehicles persist across all sessions.
- You start with very little money — around $7,500 GTA dollars after the tutorial. The game will try to funnel you toward the Rockstar 'Shark Card' store, but you do not need to spend real money. A focused beginner can earn their first million in a few hours of play.
- Other players can and will attack you in free-roam sessions. This is by design. New players have a short grace period where they are less visible on the radar — use this time to learn the map and earn initial cash without too much grief.
- Your apartment is your spawn point and where you host heists from. Buying one should be your first major goal.
02Get the Free Elegy RH8 Immediately
Before anything else: you can claim a free Elegy RH8 (a high-performance sports car worth over $90,000) from the in-game internet browser. Open your phone, go to the Browser, navigate to the Legendary Motorsport website, and look for the Obey Elegy RH8 — it's free to own, delivered directly to your garage.
This car is one of the best handling vehicles in its class and will serve you through the entire early game. You don't need to buy a car — start with this one.
While you're on the in-game internet, also:
- Check the Southern San Andreas Super Autos site for cheap practical vehicles.
- Note the Dynasty 8 Real Estate site — this is where you'll buy your first apartment.
- Bookmark Ammu-Nation for weapons — prices are the same as story mode.
03Your First Hours — Best Ways to Earn Money
Here are the fastest legitimate income sources for new players:
- Contact Missions: These are single or multiplayer missions issued by the story characters (Simeon, Martin Madrazo, Lester, etc.). Access them through your phone's Contacts or the Quick Job menu. Each mission pays $10,000–$30,000 and takes 5–15 minutes. They're the safest early grind because they put you in a separate instance away from griefers.
- Daily Objectives: Every real-world day, you get three simple objectives (e.g. 'place in top 3 in a race', 'kill 5 players in a Deathmatch', 'complete a Contact Mission'). Completing all three pays an escalating bonus — $25,000/day minimum, rising to $500,000 if you complete them every day for a week. Do these religiously.
- Races and Adversary Modes: Quick competitive multiplayer activities that pay $5,000–$15,000 per completion regardless of placing. Good for levelling up and accumulating small amounts of money.
- VIP Work (once you hit Rank 12): After reaching Rank 12 you can become a VIP for free. VIP Work missions like Headhunter, Sightseer, and Hostile Takeover pay $20,000–$30,000 each and can be done solo. They have a cooldown but are very efficient for a new player.
- Treasure Hunt: A one-time collectible quest unlocked via a text from a stranger. Finding the final chest rewards $250,000 — worth doing early when $250k is a significant sum.
04What to Buy First
Prioritising your first purchases correctly makes an enormous difference in how fast you progress. Here is the recommended order:
- 1. A low-cost apartment with a 10-car garage ($80,000–$200,000). Apartments let you host Heists, which are your first major income milestone. The cheapest heist-eligible apartment is the Del Perro Heights (Apt 7) for $200,000. You don't need a penthouse — any apartment with 10 garage spaces works.
- 2. A Kuruma (armoured) ($698,250). This armoured car is bulletproof from outside and makes Contact Missions dramatically easier because NPCs can't damage you through the windows. It's the single best quality-of-life purchase for a new player.
- 3. An Oppressor Mk I (not Mk II) (~$3.5 million eventually). A flying motorbike that makes getting around the map fast and fun. Not a first purchase — save this until you've done a few heists.
- 4. A Maze Bank West Office ($1,000,000). Unlocks CEO Work, which includes Crates and VIP Contracts. This comes after you've established a steady income from heists.
- Do NOT buy: a Nightclub, Bunker, or MC Clubhouse as your first major purchase — these are long-term passive income businesses that take weeks to pay off and require you to do resupply missions. They're end-game purchases, not starter ones.
05The Heist Ladder — Your Path to Serious Money
GTA Online has several generations of heists. As a new player, here's the order to approach them:
- Original Heists (Fleeca → Pacific Standard): The five-heist series introduced in 2015. You need a heist-eligible apartment to host them. They pay modestly ($80,000–$1,000,000 for the finale) but introduce the co-op heist format and include first-time completion bonuses.
- The Doomsday Heist ($650k–$1.2M per act): Three-act heist with good payouts. Requires an Facility property (~$1.25 million). Better than the originals but a large upfront cost.
- The Diamond Casino Heist ($1.6M–$3.6M depending on target): Widely considered the best team heist. Requires an Arcade property. The scope of payouts varies wildly by target vault contents — gold is typically best.
- Cayo Perico Heist ($900k–$1.9M per run, soloable): The most efficient money grind in GTA Online for most players. Can be completed solo. Requires a Kosatka submarine (~$2.2 million, but the Cayo Perico missions unlock it and the first run pays for itself). Once established, run this on cooldown every 2–3 real hours for consistent $1M+ income.
06Surviving Griefers and PvP
GTA Online's open-session format means other players can attack you at any time in free-roam. As a new player, these strategies reduce your exposure:
- Join Invite-Only or Crew-Only sessions for passive business resupplies and deliveries. Open the pause menu → Online → Play GTA Online → Invite Only Session. You can do almost everything in an invite-only session except Freemode Events.
- The Passive Mode (Interaction Menu → Enable Passive Mode) makes you immune to other players' attacks and blocks your ability to attack them. It has a GTA$100 activation fee in some contexts and cannot be used in some missions. It's useful while navigating the map but disables your offense.
- Watch the radar: Blinking red dots are hostile players actively shooting. Non-blinking red dots are players in passive mode. White dots are friendly. Yellow dots are your own crew/organisation members.
- Don't carry large amounts of cash in free-roam. When you die, you drop a portion of your cash on hand. Keep most of your money in the bank (money earnt from missions goes directly to the bank, cash on hand drops on death).
- Missions and Heists are safe zones. Once you start a Contact Mission or Heist Prep from your phone or the quick-job menu, you are in a separate lobby where only invited or matchmade players can join.
07Ranking Up — What Matters and What Doesn't
Your Rank (1–1,000) unlocks weapons and some clothing options, but GTA Online is not a level-gated game in the traditional sense. Most of the content that makes the game enjoyable — heists, VIP Work, CEO missions — opens up at relatively low ranks (12, 12, and CEO with office at any rank).
The fastest ways to rank up:
- Contact Missions and Heists both give RP (Reputation Points). The Playlist system (chained missions) gives RP bonuses.
- Daily Objectives give a large RP reward in addition to cash.
- Rockstar regularly runs 2× RP weekends on specific activities — playing during these events ranks you up much faster.
- Don't grind for rank specifically — it comes naturally. Focus on money first.
FAQ
Is GTA Online free to play?
GTA Online requires owning GTA 5 — it is not a standalone free-to-play game. However, it was made available for free on PlayStation 5 at launch for a limited period, and PlayStation Plus has offered it to subscribers. Once you own GTA 5, GTA Online is included at no extra cost. You can also purchase GTA+ (a subscription) for monthly benefits, but it is entirely optional.
Can I play GTA Online solo?
Yes. Many of GTA Online's most profitable activities can be done solo: VIP Work, the Cayo Perico Heist, Contact Missions, the Fleeca Job (2-player minimum), and most business resupply missions. You don't need a crew to progress — but some original heists require 2–4 players. The solo-friendly Cayo Perico Heist is widely recommended as the best solo money grind.
What is the best first property to buy in GTA Online?
Buy the cheapest apartment that includes a 10-car garage and is eligible for heist hosting. Del Perro Heights (Apt 7) at $200,000 is the most popular starter pick. This unlocks the original heist series, which you need to complete before higher-tier heists. Do not buy a standalone garage as your first property — it does not allow heist hosting.
How long does it take to get rich in GTA Online without spending real money?
Expect 10–20 hours of focused play to get your first $2–3 million legitimately. With a Kosatka submarine (unlocked after the Cayo Perico prep missions) and steady Cayo Perico Heist runs, you can earn $5–10 million per day of focused play. Passive businesses (Nightclub, Bunker) take weeks to pay off but eventually generate millions while you do other things.
What is Shark Cards — should I buy one?
Shark Cards are real-money purchases that add GTA$ to your account. They range from $2.99 (Whale Shark, $500,000) to $99.99 (Megalodon Shark, $8,000,000). You never need them — everything in GTA Online is earnable through gameplay. If you want to skip the early grind and jump straight to the mid-game, a Red Shark ($100,000 for ~$2) or Hammerhead ($700,000 for ~$9) can help, but it is entirely optional.
Is GTA Online still worth playing in 2026?
Yes, though the game is entering a new phase. Title Update 1.73 (July 2026, the Kortz Center Heist) is widely considered the final major content DLC before GTA 6's release. Rockstar has not officially announced a shutdown date — seasonal events, weekly bonuses, and smaller updates are expected to continue — but large-scale new content additions are unlikely. The player base remains active across all platforms, and the existing library of heists, businesses, and activities represents hundreds of hours of content. If you have not played GTA Online before, there has never been more to do; just be aware you are joining at the end of its active development cycle.
