GTA 5 100% Completion Guide — Full Checklist
GTA 5's in-game completion percentage tracks a specific, fixed list of story-mode content — and it's easy to stall out at 90-something percent chasing the wrong things, or missing a Strangers & Freaks chain that only Franklin can trigger. This checklist breaks down exactly what counts toward 100%, what doesn't (submarine parts and nuclear waste are optional extras, not requirements), and the collectible categories that trip up most players.
100% completion in GTA 5 story mode needs: all 69 storyline missions, 20 of Franklin's Strangers & Freaks missions, 42 hobbies & pastimes, 14 of 60 random events, all 50 spaceship parts, all 50 letter scraps, 25 of 50 stunt jumps, 25 of 50 under-the-bridge flights, 8 of 15 knife flights, 5 properties, and 4 friend activities. Submarine parts and nuclear waste are optional side content — not required.
01What Actually Counts Toward 100%
The completion percentage on your character stats screen is built from a fixed set of categories. Miss any one of them and you'll cap out below 100% no matter how much else you do:
- 69 storyline missions — every main mission from the prologue through your chosen ending. All three ending paths (Deathwish, The Time's Come, or The Third Way) contribute story missions you've already completed along the way; you only need to finish the game once.
- 20 Strangers & Freaks missions — specifically Franklin's stranger chains only. Michael's and Trevor's Strangers & Freaks content is optional flavor and doesn't count.
- 42 Hobbies & Pastimes — activities like shooting range challenges, street races, Sonar Collections yacht missions availability, and other minigames tracked under the Hobbies category.
- 14 of 60 Random Events — the roadside encounters that pop up while driving (hitchhikers, robberies in progress, road rage). You only need 14 total, and they can be any 14 — no need to chase specific ones.
- Collectibles — all 50 Spaceship Parts and all 50 Letter Scraps (see below).
- 25 of 50 Stunt Jumps, 25 of 50 Under the Bridge, 8 of 15 Knife Flights — partial completion is enough for these three challenge categories.
- 5 properties — purchase any five money-generating properties (garages, businesses, or real estate — Vanilla Unicorn and pure vehicle-storage garages don't count toward this).
- 4 friend activities — with any protagonist, at least once each: go to a bar, visit the Vanilla Unicorn strip club, watch a movie at the cinema, and play a round of darts.
- 1 vehicle purchased from a website — any car bought through an in-game website (Legendary Motorsport, Southern S.A. Super Autos, etc.) on a protagonist's phone.
02What Does NOT Count
Two collectible types are commonly mistaken for requirements but are actually optional bonus content that reward trophies/achievements without touching your completion percentage:
- 30 Submarine Parts — found via Dinghy dives after buying the Sonar Collections Dock. Rewards the "Wildlife Photography Pt. 2"-adjacent Waste Management-style unlocks, but isn't tallied toward 100%.
- 30 Nuclear Waste barrels — same Sonar Collections questline, same story: optional.
- Random "Hunting the Beast" or Bigfoot-style Easter egg hunts, all peyote plant locations, and most other secrets are also flavor content outside the completion counter.
If you're specifically chasing the platinum/1000G rather than the in-game 100% stat, those items matter for their own separate trophies — but they won't move the completion percentage itself.
03Franklin's Strangers & Freaks — the Easy One to Miss
Because only Franklin's chains count, players who play mostly as Michael or Trevor often reach the endgame with story missions maxed out but completion stuck in the 80s. Franklin's required chains include his hitman contracts for Merryweather (the "Risk Assessment" series with Devin Weston), the celebrity-stalking Paparazzo missions, the Grass Roots weed-run pair, the Exercising Demons boxing storyline, and — critically — Far Out, the mission (unlocked after "Fame or Shame") in which Omega assigns Franklin the Spaceship Parts hunt. Its follow-up, The Final Frontier, only becomes available once you've collected all 50 parts.
Some of Franklin's stranger missions unlock only after certain story missions or in-game days pass, so if one is missing from your log, check the Rockstar Games Social Club website's Progress/Completion tab — it lists exactly which sub-missions or activities you're still short on, sorted by category.
04Spaceship Parts — All 50
Omega assigns Franklin the spaceship parts hunt ("Chariot Romance") after the "Fame or Shame" mission. The 50 parts are scattered across the entire map — city rooftops, desert caves, underwater wrecks, and rural farms — and several require specific access: a few sit on rooftops only reachable by helicopter or parachute, one is in a flooded cave that needs diving gear, and others are behind locked gates that only open once you're far enough into the hunt.
There's no shortcut around visiting each location individually, but a full interactive map (searchable by region) makes the hunt far faster than blind exploration — use one alongside the in-game blip Omega provides for the nearest uncollected part. Finishing all 50 unlocks access to Omega's garage and the Space Docker rocket vehicle, plus triggers the two closing Strangers & Freaks missions in that chain.
05Letter Scraps — All 50
Letter Scraps are pieces of a torn-up love letter, each showing up as a small paper icon on the map once you're close enough. They're spread across the entire map, not just the city — expect to find them in Los Santos neighborhoods, Blaine County, Sandy Shores, around Mount Chiliad, Paleto Bay, the Alamo Sea, and other rural corners of San Andreas. Collecting all 50 completes the Epsilon Tract questline thread tied to them and is required for completion regardless of whether you also finish the separate Epsilon Program side-questline itself.
Unlike Spaceship Parts, Letter Scraps don't have a dedicated hunt mission that unlocks them — they're simply present in the world from the start, so you can pick them up any time you're in the area, including early open-world exploration before finishing the main story.
06Challenges: Stunt Jumps, Under the Bridge, Knife Flights
These three don't need full completion — only partial counts toward 100%:
- Stunt Jumps (25 of 50 required): ramps and gaps marked with a spinning checkered-flag icon; driving through one at speed triggers a jump.
- Under the Bridge (25 of 50 required): fly a plane or helicopter through the marked gap under a bridge or overpass.
- Knife Flights (8 of 15 required): fly a plane within a narrow altitude band, close to a mountainside, over a set distance without dropping out of range.
Knife Flights are the most commonly skipped because they require precise, sustained flying — practice with a stable aircraft like the Velum or Mallard before attempting the trickiest routes.
07Properties and Friend Activities
For the 5-property requirement, any mix works: garages, the golf course, Los Santos Customs, or a money-generating business all count individually — you don't need to pick specific ones, just own five total.
The friend activities (bar visit, strip club, cinema, darts) can be done solo with any single protagonist; you don't need to do all four with all three characters. Booty calls, hold-ups, and other social/criminal minigames occasionally referenced in older completion guides are miscellaneous flavor content, not part of the fixed checklist above.
08Fastest Way to Track What's Left
The single most useful tool for finishing 100% is the Rockstar Games Social Club website: log in with the account linked to your save, open your GTA V game stats, and use the Completion/Checklist tab. It breaks down every category above individually and flags exactly which named missions, activities, or collectible counts you're still missing — far faster than guessing from the in-game pause menu stats screen, which only shows aggregate percentages per category.
FAQ
What percentage do I need to hit 100% in GTA 5?
The game tracks a fixed checklist, not a rounded percentage: all 69 storyline missions, 20 of Franklin's Strangers & Freaks missions, 42 hobbies & pastimes, 14 of 60 random events, all 50 spaceship parts, all 50 letter scraps, 25 of 50 stunt jumps, 25 of 50 under-the-bridge flights, 8 of 15 knife flights, 5 properties, 1 vehicle bought from a website, and 4 friend activities.
Do submarine parts and nuclear waste count toward 100% completion?
No. Both collectible hunts (30 Submarine Parts and 30 Nuclear Waste barrels, both unlocked via the Sonar Collections Dock) are optional bonus content with their own separate rewards — they don't affect your in-game completion percentage.
Why is my completion stuck even though I finished the story?
The most common cause is Strangers & Freaks missions — only Franklin's chains count toward 100%, so if you played mostly as Michael or Trevor you may be missing several of his. The second most common cause is an incomplete Spaceship Parts or Letter Scraps set, since both require all 50 and are easy to leave a handful uncollected. Check the Social Club website's Completion tab to see exactly what's missing by category.
Do I need all 50 stunt jumps for 100%?
No — only 25 of the 50 Stunt Jumps count toward completion, along with 25 of 50 Under the Bridge flights and 8 of 15 Knife Flights. All three are partial-completion categories, not full sets.
How do I unlock the Far Out and Final Frontier missions?
Far Out becomes available to Franklin after the "Fame or Shame" mission — it's the mission where Omega assigns him the Spaceship Parts hunt, not a reward for finishing it. Once you've collected all 50 Spaceship Parts, the follow-up mission The Final Frontier unlocks. Both are part of the 20 required Strangers & Freaks missions, so skipping the spaceship parts hunt will also block you from 100% completion through this chain.
