Ghost of Yōtei is a 2025 open-world action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, exclusive to PlayStation 5. Released October 2, 2025, it is set in 1603 Ezo (now Hokkaido, Japan) and follows Atsu, a female mercenary who survives a mortal wound inflicted by a group called the Yōtei Six — the killers of her family sixteen years earlier. Witnesses who see her return from the brink of death dub her the "onryō" (a Japanese spirit of vengeful return). The game sold over 3.3 million copies by early November 2025.
Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone follow-up in the same franchise rather than a direct narrative sequel — you do not need to have played Ghost of Tsushima to enjoy it. The games share a historical Japan setting and many systemic similarities (stealth, stances, charm-following foxes), but feature entirely different protagonists, time periods, and regions. Yōtei is set roughly 400 years before the events of Tsushima's Mongol invasion, in the wilderness of Ezo (Hokkaido).
Ghost of Yōtei: Legends is a free multiplayer co-op mode released as patch 1.5 on March 10, 2026 for all Ghost of Yōtei owners. It offers three launch modes — Story (2-player narrative missions), Incursion (4-player boss-domain missions), and Survival (4-player wave defense) — plus a Raid (launched April 2026) requiring a full four-player team to face the Dragon and Lord Saito. Four playable classes are available: Samurai, Archer, Mercenary, and Shinobi. PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer.
Atsu has five distinct combat stances: Wind (wide arc attacks effective against polearm users), Stone (strong against shielded enemies, essential on Lethal difficulty), Thunder (iai draw attacks that interrupt dual-wielding enemies — best for 1v1 duels), Blossom (sweeping multi-hit attacks for crowd control), and Shadow (silent takedowns that restore Resolve on each kill, the stealth-playstyle stance). Switching stances mid-combat to match enemy types is a core skill that separates proficient players from beginners.
Charms are equippable items that grant passive bonuses across seven stat categories: Onryo, Melee, Ranged, Defense, Utility, Stealth, and others. Most charms are found by following foxes to Inari Shrines scattered across Ezo, completing shrine puzzles, or finishing side quests. Each charm can be upgraded multiple levels to increase its effect. Equipping charms early and letting them upgrade through normal gameplay is strongly recommended, since progression carries over.
