Genshin Impact Best Characters: Roles, Staples & the Meta

01Understanding the Four Core Roles

Every team in Genshin Impact is built from four slots. Players commonly assign each slot one of four functional roles, though characters can overlap — a sub-DPS can also heal, a support can also deal significant off-field damage.

• Main DPS — The character who stays on-field the longest and produces the bulk of your direct damage. Examples include Neuvillette, Arlecchino, Hu Tao, Ayaka, and Mavuika. Main DPS units tend to be the most artifact-hungry slot on a team, so invest in their gear early.
• Sub-DPS (off-field damage) — Characters who deploy an Elemental Skill or Burst and then leave the field, dealing damage in the background while the main DPS is active. Xingqiu is the textbook example: his Rain Swords trigger on the active character's Normal Attacks. Strong sub-DPS units are often the highest-value investments because they fit into many different teams.
• Support — Units that strengthen the team through buffs, resistance shred, crowd control, or elemental application rather than raw personal damage. Kazuha groups enemies and amplifies elemental damage dealt by the entire party. Xilonen reduces elemental resistance. Nahida applies Dendro to enable Bloom and Quicken reactions from off-field.
• Healer / Shielder — Characters who sustain the team's survivability. Pure healers like Jean, Kokomi, or Baizhu restore HP; shielders like Zhongli absorb incoming hits. Some units combine both functions: Bennett heals inside his Burst and buffs attack at the same time. New players should build at least one reliable sustain unit before pushing higher Spiral Abyss floors.

Building a team means covering all four functions across your four characters. A single role gap — for example no sustain — becomes punishing in Spiral Abyss floors 9–12, where enemy damage scales steeply.

02Why Tier Lists Shift Every Version

Genshin Impact releases a major update approximately every six weeks. Each update typically brings one or two new 5-star characters, new 4-star characters in event banners, new artifact sets, map areas, and sometimes mechanical changes to existing content. Any of these can reshuffle the hierarchy significantly.

A new support character can elevate an existing DPS from A-tier to S-tier overnight. A new artifact set tailored to a specific playstyle can do the same. Version 5.x introduced the Nightsoul Blessing mechanic, a new energy source that created an entirely new archetype of Natlan characters (Mavuika, Citlali, Kinich, Mualani) that slot into dedicated team structures not available to earlier characters. Version 6.6 saw Nicole — an ATK buffer — shift rankings for characters that synergise with her kit.

The practical takeaway: check current tier lists from trusted sources (Genshin.gg, Game8, Pocket Tactics) shortly before you spend Primogems. A tier list from three patches ago may mislead you. The role-based framework in this guide, however, remains stable across versions.

03Evergreen Staples: Free and 4-Star Units

Some characters have remained at or near the top of community tier lists across many versions. The ones below are 4-stars or free unlocks — meaning every player can obtain and build them without spending Primogems on a 5-star banner. This makes them some of the highest-value investments in the entire game.

Building any two or three of the above characters gives your account a flexible foundation that remains relevant regardless of which 5-stars you pull over time.

04Top 5-Star Picks (Version 6.6 Meta)

The following 5-star characters consistently rank at or near the top of community tier lists as of version 6.6. All require Primogems to obtain from limited banners. Note that their strength is heavily context-dependent — each excels inside specific team compositions.

• Kazuha (Anemo / Support) — The most universally applicable support after Bennett. His Elemental Absorption mechanic swirls an element onto grouped enemies, his A4 passive grants the team an elemental damage bonus based on his Elemental Mastery, and his crowd control is consistent. He fits into virtually every team that does not specifically need a different Anemo character. Rated S-tier support in version 6.6.
• Neuvillette (Hydro / Main DPS) — Considered by many to be the most powerful on-field DPS in the game at C0 with no signature weapon. His Charged Attacks deal massive Hydro damage, and he benefits enormously from Elemental Reaction generation (Hyperbloom, Vaporize, Freeze). His best partners include Furina, Kazuha, and Xilonen.
• Arlecchino (Pyro / Main DPS) — The best Pyro on-field DPS. Her Bond of Life mechanic converts healing to damage and she can run without a dedicated healer in certain compositions. Vaporize teams with Furina or Xilonen are consistently top performers in Spiral Abyss.
• Nahida (Dendro / Support / Sub-DPS) — Since Dendro was introduced, Nahida has been the premier Dendro applicator. Her off-field application is the engine behind Hyperbloom, Quicken, and Bloom teams. At C0 she is S-tier sub-DPS and support simultaneously.
• Xilonen (Geo / Support) — The strongest resistance-shredding support in the game as of version 6.6. She can reduce an element's resistance to a level that effectively amplifies team damage more than most offensive buffers, and she contributes her own off-field damage on top. Her limitation is needing three different element types on the team to reach full effectiveness.
• Furina (Hydro / Support) — Provides damage amplification tied to HP fluctuations and off-field Hydro application. She pairs with any healer who continuously restores HP and is the default third or fourth slot in almost every Neuvillette and Arlecchino team.

Patch-dependent note: The rankings above reflect the version 6.6 state of the game as of June 2026. New character releases and artifact sets in upcoming patches may alter these standings significantly.

05How to Build Your Roster Efficiently

Rather than chasing every new 5-star, the most efficient path through Genshin Impact follows a deliberate investment ladder:

• Step 1 — Claim your free units. Unlock Xiangling from Spiral Abyss Floor 3, Chamber 3 as soon as possible. She is objectively better than most paid 5-stars in sub-DPS roles. Check the current Archon Quest rewards and ongoing events — HoYoverse regularly gives out 4-star characters and Primogems through limited-time events.
• Step 2 — Build one main DPS to 90/90. Pick a character you enjoy playing and level them fully. Artifacts matter more than weapon rarity at this stage, so farm the recommended artifact domain set even with 4-star pieces initially.
• Step 3 — Build Bennett and Xingqiu. These two form a backbone that will serve almost any future team you build. Bennett's Burst only requires constellation 0; his C1 does not meaningfully change his core utility.
• Step 4 — Add Kazuha or Sucrose. If you have Kazuha, build him. If not, build Sucrose as a bridge. Anemo supports massively increase the damage output of your existing team without requiring new characters.
• Step 5 — Evaluate new 5-stars by team fit, not by tier alone. Before pulling on a banner, ask: does this character fit into a team with units I already have? A well-supported A-tier DPS outperforms an under-supported S-tier DPS every time.

06Reaction-Based Team Archetypes to Know

Genshin Impact's damage system is built around Elemental Reactions — combinations of two elements that trigger bonus effects. Understanding which archetypes are strong in the current meta helps you prioritise pulls and builds.

• Vaporize — Pyro plus Hydro. Pyro hitting a Hydro-affected enemy or Hydro hitting a Pyro-affected enemy deals 1.5× or 2× damage respectively. Arlecchino, Hu Tao, and Xiangling are the most common drivers; Xingqiu and Yelan are the most common Hydro enablers.
• Hyperbloom / Bloom — Dendro plus Hydro creates Dendro Cores that explode for Bloom damage. Adding Electro causes Cores to home in on enemies (Hyperbloom). Nahida is the definitive off-field Dendro applier; Raiden or Fischl trigger Hyperbloom. Neuvillette functions well in Bloom teams as a Hydro driver.
• Freeze — Hydro plus Cryo freezes enemies in place, allowing Cryo characters to deal bonus damage via the Shatter or Cryo resonance mechanics. Ayaka and Ganyu are the traditional Freeze DPS units; Kokomi or Mona provide Hydro alongside crowd control.
• Nightsoul / Natlan archetype — Introduced in version 5.0, Nightsoul Blessing characters (Mavuika, Kinich, Mualani, Citlali) have a shared energy system and benefit from being in teams together. This archetype is powerful but self-contained — it requires several Natlan characters to function at full efficiency.
• Aggravate / Quicken — Dendro plus Electro. The Quicken aura on enemies makes subsequent Electro hits (Aggravate) and Dendro hits (Spread) deal bonus scaling damage. Alhaitham and Yae Miko are strong drivers; Nahida and Fischl are the core supports.
