The complete Genshin Impact beginner guide for new Travelers

Genshin Impact drops you into Teyvat with almost no tutorial, an overwhelming number of systems, and a gacha economy that can swallow your Primogems before you know what you want. Follow this guide to understand Adventure Rank, elemental combat, resin, and team building — so you spend the first weeks making real progress instead of correcting mistakes.

01Adventure Rank: the gate that controls everything

Adventure Rank (AR) is the single most important number on your account. It unlocks story chapters, increases world difficulty, raises the cap on character and weapon levels, and opens new domains. Every major activity you do — completing quests, opening chests, activating waypoints, spending resin — awards Adventure EXP to push that number up.

The fastest path through the early ranks is to follow the Archon Quest main storyline. These quests carry you through each nation in sequence, hand out large chunks of Adventure EXP, and unlock the daily commission system at AR 8. Once commissions are available, do all four every single day — they reward 60 Primogems and a meaningful amount of Adventure EXP that compounds into hundreds of thousands of gems across a year.

02Exploring Teyvat: what to prioritise on the map

Teyvat is enormous, and exploration is genuinely rewarding rather than padding. That said, not everything on the map deserves equal attention early on. Focus your exploration time in roughly this order of return:

ActivityRewardPriority
Statues of the SevenAdventure EXP, Stamina upgrades, Dendroculi / Geoculi etc. bonusHigh — always activate
Teleport waypoints50 Adventure EXP each, fast travelHigh — activate immediately
Luxurious and Precious chestsPrimogems, Mora, ascension materialsHigh
Common chestsMinimal Mora, low-rarity itemsLow — skip unless nearby
Oculi collection (full sets)Stamina upgrades, PrimogemsMedium — pace over time
World questsPrimogems, lore, occasional gadgetsMedium — play when you feel like it

Stamina (the green bar used for sprinting, climbing, and swimming) is upgraded by offering Anemoculi, Geoculi, Electroculi, Dendroculi, Hydroculi, and Pyroculi at their respective Statues. More stamina is a genuine quality-of-life upgrade for exploration, so try to collect regional oculi steadily rather than leaving them all to endgame.

03Elemental combat and reactions: the core of every fight

Every character in Genshin deals damage through one of seven elements: Pyro, Hydro, Cryo, Electro, Anemo, Geo, and Dendro. Applying two different elements to the same enemy triggers an elemental reaction, which is almost always more powerful than the raw damage of either element alone. Mastering reactions is what separates a player who clears content with ease from one who struggles.

The most important reactions for beginners to learn are:

Elemental Mastery (EM) is the stat that scales reaction damage and the bonus damage from Aggravate and Spread (the Dendro-Electro Quicken reactions). For reaction-focused teams, stacking EM on the character who triggers the reaction is often more valuable than raw attack or crit.

04Building your starter team: four roles, one synergy

Genshin fields teams of four characters in rotation. A functional team needs a main DPS who stays on the field longest, one or two sub-DPS who deal off-field damage (often through Elemental Skill or Burst), a healer or shielder for survivability, and ideally a character who enables reactions for the whole team. You do not need five-star characters to clear story content or the early floors of Spiral Abyss.

A reliable free-to-play starter lineup that carries you to AR 45 and beyond:

As you draw more characters from the gacha, replace Barbara with a more offensive Hydro character (such as Xingqiu or Yelan) and slot in a dedicated Anemo support to boost your Swirl damage. The key principle: always ensure you have at least one healer or shielder in every team until you know the fight well enough to dodge everything.

05Resin: the daily resource cap you cannot ignore

Original Resin is the stamina system that gates endgame rewards. It regenerates at one point every eight minutes, capping at 200 — which means roughly 24 hours to fill from zero. Letting it sit capped for long stretches is the single biggest waste a new player makes. Log in at least once a day to spend it.

How to spend resin before AR 45:

Condensed Resin becomes available once you reach a certain point in the game and doubles your domain or Ley Line rewards for the same resin cost. Convert your resin to Condensed Resin before you go to sleep if you expect to overfill — it stores up to five at a time and is always more efficient than losing resin to the cap.

06Free-to-play priorities: where to spend Primogems and time

Primogems are the premium currency used for Wishes (pulls on the gacha banners). As a free-to-play player, the game generates around 1,800 to 2,000 Primogems per month from daily commissions alone — significantly more during active story patches with quests and events. Spending them wisely is the difference between a strong account and a diluted one.

Beyond Primogems, prioritise getting Spiral Abyss Floors 1–4 cleared early to unlock Xiangling for free, and complete the Archon Quest through at least Sumeru so you have access to Dendro Traveler. Both of these are permanent account gains that no amount of pulling can replicate at zero cost.

FAQ

How long does it take to reach Adventure Rank 45 in Genshin Impact?

Most players reach AR 45 in four to six weeks of consistent daily play — completing Archon Quests, daily commissions, and spending resin on Ley Line Outcrops. Rushing is possible in two to three weeks, but there is no benefit to burning out early.

Should I pull on banners as a beginner?

Save your Primogems until after AR 20. Your first priority should be the Beginners' Wish banner for a discounted Noelle, then save for a limited character you genuinely want to build. Never use Intertwined Fate on the Weapon Banner as a new player — the pity system there is much harsher.

What is the best starter team for free-to-play players?

The classic free starter lineup is Traveler (Anemo or Dendro), Kaeya, Barbara, and Xiangling — all obtainable without spending real money. Xiangling is a top-tier sub-DPS who stays relevant endgame; claim her free from Spiral Abyss Floor 3 Chamber 3 as soon as you can.

When should I start farming artifacts in Genshin Impact?

Wait until Adventure Rank 45. Before that point, domains only drop 4-star artifacts at best. Every point of resin spent on artifacts before AR 45 is wasted compared to running Ley Line Outcrops for character EXP books and Mora.

Genshin Impact receives major patches roughly every six weeks — character meta, quest unlocks, and event rewards change with each version, so check back for updates.
