Gears of War: E-Day New Gameplay Features — Jump, Traversal, Weapons & Enemies

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

The Coalition has been upfront that E-Day is the biggest movement overhaul in the series' history. Here's what actually changes in how you fight, move, and what you're fighting, based on the gameplay deep dive shown at the June 2026 Xbox Games Showcase.

Quick answer

Gears of War: E-Day's biggest gameplay change is jumping — the series' first vertical traversal, letting you climb, slide, and reach rooftops for new flanking routes. Cover-to-cover movement is faster than before, new weapons like the Gut Puncher grenade launcher and Incinerator shotgun join returning ones like the Lancer and Longshot, and the enemy roster escalates from Wretches and Drones up to Boomers, Corpsers, Reavers, and new creatures surfacing from the Hollow.

01Jumping: A First for the Series

Every prior Gears game kept you locked to the ground plane; E-Day doesn't:

02How Missions Use the New Verticality

It's not just movement for its own sake — mission layouts are built around it. Some encounters are still linear, scripted combat sequences, but others are larger, open districts you can approach from multiple angles: head-on through a front entrance, flanking through a side door, or climbing to a balcony across the street to snipe with the Longshot. That third option — high ground as a real tactical choice — is new to the series.

04The Enemies: Locust and the Hollow

Combat escalates in intensity as the story of Emergence Day unfolds:

05How This Fits Into Co-op

The new verticality and flanking routes are designed with squads in mind — reviving a downed teammate mid-jump, splitting up to hit an objective from two directions, or having one player hold high ground with the Longshot while others push at street level. See our co-op guide for how squads are actually structured across Bravo Squad's four characters.

FAQ

Can you jump in Gears of War: E-Day?

Yes — jumping is new to the series in E-Day, alongside sliding out of a sprint and climbing vehicles and structures, opening up rooftops and elevated routes that weren't playable combat space in earlier Gears games.

What new weapons are in Gears of War: E-Day?

Confirmed new weapons include the Gut Puncher grenade launcher and the Incinerator shotgun, alongside returning series staples like the Lancer (whose origin story the game tells) and the Longshot sniper rifle.

What enemies do you fight in Gears of War: E-Day?

The roster escalates from Wretches early on to Drones, Boomers, Corpsers, and Reavers, plus new creatures native to the Hollow, the underground network the Locust erupt from on Emergence Day.

What is the Hollow in Gears of War: E-Day?

The Hollow is the underground network beneath the planet Sera that the Locust Horde erupts from on Emergence Day. E-Day introduces new enemy creatures that originate there, alongside familiar Locust types.

How is the Lancer connected to the E-Day story?

E-Day depicts the origin of the Lancer Assault Rifle — the series' signature chainsaw-bayonet weapon — showing it developed with Marcus Fenix's involvement during the early days of the Locust invasion.
