Forza Horizon 6 Best Settings PC & Console Performance Guide

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Forza Horizon 6 is one of the most technically demanding racing games on PC, but it also has one of the deepest settings menus. The difference between the default preset and an optimised configuration can be 30–50% more frames — or a significantly better-looking image at the same frame rate. This guide covers the most impactful settings on PC, what to change on Xbox Series X|S, and how to set up assists for any skill level.

01Video Settings: Fix These First

Before touching the graphics sliders, configure the video output settings. These determine your presentation pipeline and have a bigger impact on how the game feels than individual quality settings.

02Upscaling: DLSS, FSR, and XeSS

FH6 supports three upscaling technologies. Choosing the right one for your GPU is the single most impactful graphics decision on PC:

Avoid DLSS Frame Generation unless your base frame rate is already above 60 FPS. FH6 launched with DLSS Frame Generation only (FSR Frame Generation was not available at launch). The implementation has a known visual artefact above 100 mph — road surfaces can smear in generated frames. Disable it until Playground Games patches this.

03Graphics Settings: Biggest Impact First

FH6 auto-detects a preset based on your GPU, but the preset usually misallocates performance. Here is how to spend your GPU budget on settings that actually look different, versus ones that are invisible at racing speeds:

Settings worth keeping on High:

Settings you can reduce without visible impact at racing speeds:

04Console Settings (Xbox Series X|S)

On Xbox Series X, FH6 ships with two visual modes:

Xbox Series S offers both Quality Mode (1440p / 30 FPS) and Performance Mode (1080p / 60 FPS), each with dynamic resolution scaling. Unlike Series X, the Series S Performance Mode drops to 1080p to hit 60 FPS — but both modes are fully available.

On console, the most useful settings to change are in the Assists and Difficulty menus rather than graphics — those cannot be changed. On Xbox, ensure Dolby Atmos or Windows Sonic spatial audio is enabled in the Xbox system audio settings if you are using headphones; FH6's engine and environment audio benefits noticeably from spatial positioning.

05Assists Settings for Every Skill Level

FH6 offers a full set of driving assists. Each has a small impact on credit rewards — more assists enabled lowers the credit multiplier slightly:

Beginner setup (learning the game):

Intermediate setup (comfortable with the roads):

Advanced setup (competitive / drift):

Note on Difficulty and Credits: Driver difficulty affects credit payouts. Hard difficulty awards approximately 50% more credits than Medium. Highly Skilled and Expert add further bonuses. You do not need to win every race to benefit — placing 3rd on Hard still pays more than winning on Medium.

06Controller and HUD Settings

For controller play on Xbox or PC, these adjustments improve accuracy:

FAQ

What graphics settings have the biggest impact on FPS in Forza Horizon 6?

In order of performance impact: Ray Traced Global Illumination Quality (disable or set to Low), Ray Traced Reflections (on/off toggle), Shadow Quality, Shader Quality, and Volumetric Fog. The upscaling choice (DLSS vs FSR vs XeSS) is the single largest overall performance lever — switching from native to DLSS Quality can recover 30–50% more frames.

Should I use Performance Mode or Quality Mode on Xbox Series X?

Performance Mode (60 FPS) is recommended for all active gameplay — racing, drifting, and Touge events. The 60 FPS frame rate makes the game feel significantly more responsive than Quality Mode's 30 FPS. On Series X, Performance Mode targets 4K (dynamic). On Series S, it targets 1080p. Quality Mode is best used for photography, cinematic replays, and exploring the world at a slow pace.

Does turning off assists in Forza Horizon 6 give more credits?

Yes. Each assist disabled contributes a small bonus to your credit multiplier. The largest contributor is Driver Difficulty — racing on Hard or Highly Skilled gives the most meaningful credit bonus. ABS, Traction Control, and Stability Control each add a smaller fraction. Driving Line has no credit impact. Rewind has no credit penalty — keep it on at all levels.

Is Frame Generation worth enabling in Forza Horizon 6?

Not currently. FH6 launched with DLSS Frame Generation only — FSR Frame Generation was not included at launch. The DLSS Frame Generation implementation has a known visual artefact causing road surface smearing at speeds above 100 mph. Disable it until Playground Games patches this. Once fixed, it will be worth enabling on RTX 40/50 series GPUs when base FPS is already above 60.

What are the best controller settings for Forza Horizon 6?

Set Steering Dead Zone Inside to 0 (adjust up only if your stick drifts), Steering Linearity to 50–55 for smoother centre response, and Vibration Scale to 0.25–0.35 to reduce fatigue. For steering mode, Normal works well for most players; Simulation gives more precision for experienced players or those using a racing wheel.
