How to Beat Promised Consort Radahn in Shadow of the Erdtree
Promised Consort Radahn is the mandatory final boss of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, and a completely different fight from Starscourge Radahn back in Caelid — a resurrected, Miquella-bound version of the demigod that's widely regarded as one of the hardest bosses FromSoftware has made. This guide covers where to find him, both phases, his instant-kill charm grab, his weaknesses, and the build most guides converge on to survive him.
01Where to Find Promised Consort Radahn
Promised Consort Radahn is fought atop Enir-Ilim, reached after defeating Romina, Saint of the Bud and burning the Sealing Tree with Messmer's Kindling. He's the DLC's final, required boss — there's no path around him if you want to finish Shadow of the Erdtree.
- Location: Enir-Ilim, Land of Shadow (Shadow of the Erdtree DLC)
- Boss type: Required final boss — not optional
- Before you go in: Max your Scadutree Blessing if at all possible — most guides treat level 20 (the cap) as close to mandatory for this fight, since Scadutree level swings both the damage you deal and the damage you take by a huge margin in the DLC
- Bring: Miquella's Great Rune, if you have it — it becomes important the moment phase two starts (see below)
02Phase 1 — Twin-Blade Radahn
Phase one is an aggressive, fast-paced melee fight with Radahn's twin gravity-infused blades. Unlike his Caelid counterpart, there's very little ranged component here — expect to be in his face, or dodging out of it, for the entire phase.
- Opening leap: Radahn closes the distance with a leaping attack almost immediately after the fog gate — you'll only get a couple of actions (drinking a Wondrous Physick, popping a buff) before you need to be ready to dodge.
- Sword combos: Fast, multi-hit strings with his twin blades. The safe punish window is short — trim your own combos to two or three hits rather than trying to trade a full string back.
- Stay mobile: Because there's little ranged pressure in phase one, circling and repositioning between his combos costs you little and keeps you out of his follow-up range.
03Phase 2 — The Charm of Miquella
At roughly 65% health — most guides converge on a figure close to this, though exact call-outs vary slightly — Miquella appears on Radahn's back and the fight becomes Consort Radahn: faster, and built around new Holy-infused attacks.
- Charm grab (unique to phase two): A grapple that deals no direct damage but inflicts a Charmed-type curse if it lands. Getting grabbed a second time is an instant kill, so this is the single most important attack in the fight to respect. Watch for the grab animation and dodge right as it reaches you rather than trying to out-space it early.
- Miquella's Great Rune clears the curse after the first successful grab, effectively buying you a second chance — carrying it in a usable item slot is close to mandatory for this phase.
- Holy burst: Radahn levitates and drops a circular light zone that detonates after a short delay, followed by a few more delayed holy strikes. Sprint straight out of the circle before it goes off rather than trying to dodge through it.
- Afterimage combo: A string of fast holy clone strikes followed by one real, much harder-hitting slash. Dodge through the clone flurry, then watch specifically for the final real hit — it's the one that actually punishes a mistimed dodge.
- Delayed aftershocks: Several of his phase-one sword swings gain a delayed Holy-damage follow-up in phase two — don't assume a swing is over just because the blade has stopped moving.
04Weaknesses and the Safest Build
Multiple independent guides converge on the same defensive approach for this fight, which is a good sign it's not just one site's opinion: a greatshield paired with a Pierce/status thrusting weapon.
- Confirmed weaknesses: Pierce physical damage and Scarlet Rot are the most consistently recommended damage types. Bleed and Frostbite also work, though he resists them harder than Rot.
- Weapon pick: The Antspur Rapier comes up repeatedly — it has built-in Scarlet Rot buildup and can be given a Blood affinity for a dual bleed-and-rot approach.
- Block, don't just dodge: A greatshield with high physical negation, backed by the Greatshield Talisman (reduces stamina cost while blocking) and Two-Headed Turtle Talisman (stamina regen), lets you tank his fast melee strings instead of needing a perfect dodge read on every hit.
- Holy negation for phase two: Gear like the Pearl Shield Talisman or Golden Braid specifically softens the holy damage that phase two adds on top of his melee.
- Casters: Direct ranged spellcasting is largely ineffective against his mobility and aggression — plan to fight at melee range or quick-cast between dodges rather than kiting.
05Should You Summon?
Spirit Ashes and the DLC's questline NPC summons (Ansbach, Thiollier) are both allowed in this fight, but it's a genuine trade-off rather than a free help button: summoning anything increases Radahn's maximum health and status resistance, the same trade-off that applies to every boss with co-op signs in Elden Ring.
Most guides lean toward fighting solo or with an NPC ally rather than a Spirit Ash, arguing the HP/resistance increase isn't worth it against a boss this fast. A minority take specifically recommends a heavily upgraded Mimic Tear to pull aggro and create openings. Neither approach is wrong — it comes down to whether you'd rather fight a shorter, harder version of the boss or a longer, slightly softer one.
FAQ
Is Promised Consort Radahn harder than Malenia?
This is genuinely debated in the community with no clear consensus. Consort Radahn is mandatory to finish the DLC and layers fast melee, a delayed holy burst, and an instant-kill charm grab into one fight, while Malenia is optional but built around her near-unavoidable Waterfowl Dance combo. Which one is 'harder' tends to come down to which mechanic a given player struggles with more.
Can you use Spirit Ashes against Promised Consort Radahn?
Yes — Spirit Ashes and the questline NPC summons Ansbach and Thiollier are all allowed. Keep in mind that summoning anything increases Radahn's max health and status resistance, so it's a genuine trade-off rather than a pure advantage. Most guides lean toward fighting solo or with an NPC ally rather than a Spirit Ash.
What happens if Miquella's charm grab lands twice?
It's an instant kill. The grab itself deals no direct damage and applies a Charmed-type curse on the first successful hit; Miquella's Great Rune clears that curse if you're carrying it, giving you a second chance. Getting grabbed again after the curse is active ends the run immediately, so treat this attack as the fight's top priority to dodge.
What level and Scadutree Blessing do I need for Promised Consort Radahn?
Recommendations vary enough between guides that no single number is reliable — expect to be well past level 150 with a fully built character. What guides do agree on is Scadutree Blessing: max it to level 20 if you possibly can, since it has an outsized effect on both the damage you deal and the damage you take in the DLC.
What is Promised Consort Radahn weak to?
Pierce physical damage and Scarlet Rot are his most consistently confirmed weaknesses. Bleed and Frostbite also work, though he resists them more than Rot. A greatshield plus a Pierce/status thrusting weapon like the Antspur Rapier is the build most guides converge on.
