How to Beat Malenia, Blade of Miquella in Elden Ring

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Malenia is widely regarded as the hardest boss FromSoftware has ever shipped. She heals on every hit, punishes passive play with relentless combos, and enters a second phase that covers the arena in Scarlet Rot. This guide covers everything needed to reach her, read her moveset, counter her lifesteal, and take her down across both phases.

01How to Reach Malenia — Finding the Haligtree

Malenia does not appear on the main critical path. She waits at the very bottom of Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree, a hidden legacy dungeon locked behind a two-part secret medallion. Neither half is handed to the player — both require deliberate exploration.

Once both halves are in hand, travel to the Grand Lift of Rold in the Mountaintops of the Giants. Instead of using the standard Rold Medallion, hold the action button to hoist the Secret Medallion and the lift carries you to the hidden path leading into the Consecrated Snowfield and eventually the Haligtree. Work through Miquella's Haligtree and then Elphael until the Haligtree Roots Site of Grace appears — Malenia's fog gate is directly down the steps from there.

02Malenia's Core Mechanic — Lifesteal You Cannot Ignore

Before studying individual attacks, understanding the lifesteal rule is essential because it shapes every other decision. Malenia heals a fixed percentage of her maximum HP on every hit that connects — including hits absorbed by a shield. A full Waterfowl Dance combo can restore more than a third of her health bar even when blocked perfectly.

This makes turtling with a greatshield a losing strategy. The correct response is controlled aggression: stay close enough to punish quickly, minimise the number of hits she lands, and use status effects or high-damage burst to outpace her recovery. Bleed and frostbite are the two most effective tools because they deal large chunks of damage in a single proc, giving less opportunity for the lifesteal to matter.

There is no way to disable or reduce the lifesteal — it is a permanent property of every attack she performs. Accept it as a rule of the fight and design the entire game plan around never letting her combo land freely.

03Surviving the Waterfowl Dance

Waterfowl Dance is the attack that ends most attempts. Malenia leaps briefly into the air, then launches into a rapid sequence of slashing strokes that cover ground at alarming speed. Each stroke chains immediately into the next and can proc her lifesteal multiple times if any slash connects.

Phase 1 — the multi-stroke version: The tell is a small hop upward with her katana raised. There are two reliable methods for avoiding it:

  1. Sprint method (safest at range): The moment she hops, sprint directly away. The first burst has a fixed travel distance; running places you outside it. For the later strokes, reorient to face her and dodge into each slash rather than away — rolling away extends the time you spend inside the hitbox.
  2. Dodge-under method (close range): Walk around to her back side as she hops, then roll forward through the first descending slash. Rolling into her body skips past the hitbox instead of trading i-frames against the long swing arc. For the remaining strokes, dodge forward-diagonally into each one.
  3. Beware the delayed final stroke: After the last visible swing, Malenia sometimes performs a delayed follow-up slash. Wait a full beat before attempting a punish — committing too early is one of the most common causes of death.

Phase 2 adds a diving rot explosion to the Waterfowl sequence. After the final stroke she may plunge a spectral clone downward that detonates in a Scarlet Rot cloud. Roll away from the impact point and keep moving until the cloud dissipates.

04Phase 1 — Blade of Miquella

Outside of Waterfowl Dance, phase 1 is the more manageable half. Malenia favours a nimble katana moveset with forward lunges, spinning slashes, and a long-range thrust. Most individual attacks can be rolled through by timing the dodge to the moment her body commits — watching her elbow and hip rather than the blade tip gives a more reliable cue.

05Phase 2 — Goddess of Rot

At zero HP for phase 1, Malenia kneels and undergoes a cinematic transition. Do not attempt to heal during this animation — the transition is not interruptible and you cannot take damage while it plays. Use the time to prepare for a significant escalation.

In phase 2 she sprouts spectral wings that spread Scarlet Rot with each large motion. The arena floor accumulates rot clouds that persist for several seconds, shrinking the safe space over time. New attacks appear:

The same lifesteal rule applies, but now she hits harder and rot clouds can passively proc your rot bar during a punish window. Prioritise clean dodges over greedy extra hits — two or three strikes per opening is the sustainable cadence.

06Best Builds, Weapons, and Summons

Malenia is weak to Frostbite (which deals a big chunk on proc and lowers her damage negation) and has relatively low resistance to Hemorrhage (bleed). Combining both is the most efficient way to outpace her lifesteal.

Regardless of build, equip the Lord of Blood's Exultation talisman if using bleed — it grants an attack power boost whenever blood loss occurs nearby, stacking with the bleed proc itself.

FAQ

Does Malenia heal even if attacks are blocked with a shield?

Yes. Her lifesteal triggers on every hit that makes contact regardless of whether it is blocked. Blocking a full Waterfowl Dance combo can restore a very large portion of her health bar, so using a greatshield as the primary defence is strongly discouraged — prioritise dodging over blocking for the entire fight.

What is the easiest way to dodge Waterfowl Dance?

The most consistent method at range is to sprint directly away the moment Malenia hops upward, which takes you outside the first burst entirely. At close range, walk around to her back side during the hop and roll forward through the descending first slash, then dodge forward-diagonally into each subsequent stroke. Always wait a full beat after the last visible stroke before punishing — a delayed slash catches early commitments.

Is Malenia optional, and what does defeating her reward?

Malenia is entirely optional — beating her is not required to reach the final story bosses. Defeating her yields a huge rune reward, Malenia's Great Rune, and the Remembrance of the Rot Goddess, which can be exchanged at Roundtable Hold for the Hand of Malenia katana or the Scarlet Aeonia incantation.

What level should you be before attempting Malenia?

Most players find the fight manageable starting around level 120–130 with a fully upgraded weapon. At lower levels her two-to-three-hit kills leave almost no margin for error even with solid dodge timing. Farming runes before the attempt is a practical way to close the gap quickly.
