How to Beat Margit, the Fell Omen
Margit is the guardian of Stormveil Castle and the first major boss wall in Elden Ring — many players hit him under-leveled and walk away frustrated. The key is patience: he punishes greedy combos with brutally delayed follow-up swings, so a disciplined one- or two-hit punish beats a frantic button-mash every time. Come prepared with a reasonably upgraded weapon, a spirit summon, and optionally Margit's Shackle, and the fight becomes very manageable.
01Come Prepared — Level and Gear Check
Most players reach Margit at roughly character level 20–30, and that is a reasonable window. If you are dying in two or three hits, explore Limgrave more before returning — the Deathtouched Catacombs, Stormfoot Catacombs, and the Mistwood ruins all reward runes and useful gear. More important than raw level is your weapon upgrade. A weapon at +3 or higher (using Smithing Stones found in the open world or in Limgrave's mines) makes a noticeable difference in how quickly you chip down Margit's health bar.
Stock up on Flasks of Crimson Tears before you go in. Leveling your Crimson Tears flask count and potency at a Site of Grace using Sacred Tears and Golden Seeds found around Limgrave and the Church of Elleh area is well worth doing before the attempt.
02Summon Help — Spirit Ashes and Sorcerer Rogier
You do not have to fight Margit alone. Two forms of help are available and both are strong:
- Lone Wolf Ashes — the pack of three spirit wolves you receive early from Renna at the Church of Elleh. These are free, given to most players at the start, and are excellent at keeping Margit distracted. While he swings at a wolf, you hit him from the side or behind. Any spirit ashes that you have and feel comfortable with will work; the wolves are simply the most available option.
- Sorcerer Rogier — his golden summon sign appears on the ground just outside the boss fog gate. He casts sorceries and draws Margit's attention reliably. Using him costs nothing; no prior encounter with Rogier is required for his sign to appear here.
Having at least one ally active splits Margit's attention and gives you crucial breathing room. If you are struggling with the fight solo, using both Rogier and spirit ashes at the same time is perfectly valid.
03Get Margit's Shackle From Patches
There is a special consumable item called Margit's Shackle that pins Margit to the ground for a few seconds, giving you free hits. You can use it twice per fight.
To get it, travel to Murkwater Cave — a small dungeon along the riverbed in northern Limgrave. Inside you will trigger an ambush from Patches, a recurring merchant character. After a brief encounter he settles down and opens his shop. Margit's Shackle is one of the items for sale at his stall.
The shackle only works in phase one (before Margit's halfway-health transition). Use it when Margit is at a distance and not already mid-swing — it will interrupt him and leave him open. Two uses across phase one can trim down a large chunk of his health with minimal risk.
04Reading Margit's Attacks — Bait and Punish
Margit's greatest trick is the delayed swing. He will wind up an attack and hold it for longer than feels natural, waiting for you to roll early and then punishing your recovery. The solution is to wait a beat longer than your instincts tell you before dodging.
Key attack patterns to watch for:
- Hammer combo — a series of slow, heavy overhead slams. Roll into each attack (toward Margit) rather than away. After the last hit in the sequence, you have a clear window to land one or two strikes.
- Dagger flurry — he conjures several golden daggers and throws them in quick succession. Keep moving sideways or roll through them; do not stand still.
- Leaping slam — Margit jumps high into the air and crashes down. This one looks scary but the landing is a large, obvious opening. Wait for the impact, then punish.
- Tail swipe — a fast low sweep he uses when you are directly behind him. Stay at his side rather than directly behind to reduce the chance of eating this.
The golden rule: commit to one hit (two at most) after each opening, then step back and reset. Greed is how Margit kills people.
05Phase Two — Staff, Extra Reach, More Pressure
At roughly 65% health remaining (about a third of his bar gone), Margit slams the ground, staggers briefly, and enters phase two. A golden magical staff appears in his free hand, extending his range and adding new attacks to his kit. He becomes more aggressive, chaining combos together with less gap between them.
What changes in phase two:
- The staff gives him a long sweeping reach attack that catches players who think they are safely at medium range.
- He can combine his hammer and staff in multi-hit chains — count the hits before committing to a punish.
- The holy cross attack (a glowing golden cross slam) has a wide area of effect; roll to the side, not backward.
The phase transition stagger is a free punish window — as soon as you see the cutscene-like slam animation end, pile in with your strongest attack. Spirit ashes are especially helpful in phase two because Margit's aggression makes it hard to find clean openings on your own. If Rogier or the wolves are still alive, they will continue drawing his attention and creating those gaps for you.
Margit's Shackle does not work in phase two, so save any other tricks you have for this stretch.
06Quick Strategy Summary
- Reach roughly level 20–30 and upgrade your weapon to at least +3 before attempting.
- Buy Margit's Shackle from Patches in Murkwater Cave.
- Enter the fight and summon Sorcerer Rogier from his sign outside the fog gate, then immediately summon your spirit ashes inside.
- Use Margit's Shackle twice in phase one when he is stationary for free damage.
- Be patient — one or two hits per opening, then back off.
- In phase two, punish the transition stagger, count combo hits before attacking, and respect his extended range.
FAQ
What level should I be to fight Margit in Elden Ring?
Most players find the fight manageable somewhere between level 20 and 35. Your weapon upgrade level matters just as much — a +3 or higher weapon deals noticeably more damage than a base weapon regardless of your character level. If you are dying very quickly, explore Limgrave further for runes and Smithing Stones before returning.
Where do I get Margit's Shackle?
Margit's Shackle is sold by Patches, a merchant found in Murkwater Cave — a small cave dungeon along the riverbed in northern Limgrave. After you trigger and resolve the Patches encounter inside the cave, he opens a shop and the Shackle is available to purchase. It works during Margit's first phase only and can be used twice per fight.
Can I use summons against Margit the Fell Omen?
Yes. Both NPC summons and spirit ashes work in this fight. Sorcerer Rogier's golden summon sign appears near the fog gate without requiring any prior contact with him — just look for it on the ground before you step through. He is a strong distraction and deals magic damage at range. Spirit ashes like the Lone Wolf pack are also effective. Using both at once is completely allowed and makes the fight significantly more forgiving, especially for players still learning the timing of Margit's delayed attacks.
