FC 27 Beginner Tips What changed in defending, corners & passing
Learn manual defending first: in FC 27 AI defenders no longer auto-tackle a dribbler in Competitive gameplay, so a defender you are not controlling will not win the ball for you. That is the biggest shift from FC 26, and it sits alongside new corner controls, a reworked crossing model and two new types of off-the-ball runs.
01Defend manually: the biggest change
EA's gameplay deep dive says AI defenders no longer automatically tackle a dribbler, and that this change applies to Competitive gameplay only. In practice you must do the tackling yourself: switch to the defender nearest the ball, jockey, and time the tackle.
To make that possible, EA also strengthened the defender you control: increased jockey speed, a wider range for the manual stand tackle, and a longer interception reach than an AI-controlled defender (EA reduced the AI's own interception reach). AI teammates also use Teammate Contain, which means they mark the ball carrier from a slightly longer distance instead of diving in.
- Jockey first, tackle second. Faster jockeying makes it easier to stay goal-side of a dribbler without committing.
- Use your longer interception reach. Step into passing lanes instead of chasing the ball carrier.
- Do not expect the AI to bail you out. If you stop controlling a defender, the dribbler is no longer automatically challenged.
Note: the pitch notes tie the auto-tackle change to Competitive gameplay. EA covers Authentic gameplay changes separately in its Career Mode deep dive, so treat the defending behaviour above as Competitive-specific.
02Corners: you now play them live
After you choose the delivery target on a corner, the camera moves into the box so you can move, switch players, make runs and shield. Short corners are excluded from this. Because the box is now free movement, defenders and attackers no longer auto-position for headers.
During the window before the delivery you can hold R1 (PlayStation) / RB (Xbox) to use the new avoidance mechanic. Treat each corner as a small set-piece you control rather than a button press and a wait.
03Crossing and heading
Crosses now go into space more often, and both aim and power matter more. Headers require more precision, but a cleanly struck header is more accurate than before. Red Bull's launch review calls crossing 'finally a viable way to create chances again'.
- Aim the cross at a space the runner will reach, not at a player standing still.
- Add power deliberately: a floated, weakly powered cross is easier to defend.
- In the box, take a moment to line up headers instead of mashing the shot button.
04New runs and passing rules
Two new run types were added: Triggered Curved Runs (tap L1+R1 on PlayStation, LB+RB on Xbox) and Pass & Follow Runs (L1+R1+X, or LB+RB+A). Manually triggered runs now stop after a limited distance, and you can trigger the command again to keep a runner going. EA also says AI creative runs no longer need to avoid being offside.
Passing changed too. Ground and lobbed through passes no longer steer toward open lanes, and dinked passes (ground and through) are now fully manual. Your aim decides where the ball goes, so practise your through ball direction in a friendly before a ranked match.
05Dribbling and PlayStyles
Some agile dribblers now keep control after a challenge (off-balance dribbling). EA notes this works only on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2. EA also rebalanced ten PlayStyles with more emphasis on attributes: Finesse Shot, Technical Dribbler, Intercept, Rapid, Quick Step, Pinged Pass, Tiki Taka, Jockey, Precision Header and Low Driven.
Red Bull's review still says pace is king, so quick wingers and defenders remain valuable even after the PlayStyle changes.
06What the October patches changed
EA's Title Update v1.1.0 (27 October 2026) states there are no gameplay balance and tuning changes. For new players the relevant gameplay fix is that some players could get stuck during the opening tutorial.
07A simple first-week practice plan
- Play offline matches and defend manually from the first minute.
- Use corners to rehearse runs and the avoidance window.
- Try each new run type once, then keep the one you can trigger reliably.
- Move to online modes only after your through passes land where you aim.
FAQ
Do AI defenders still tackle for you in FC 27?
Not against a dribbler in Competitive gameplay. EA's gameplay deep dive says AI defenders no longer auto-tackle a dribbler there, so you tackle manually.
How do I take corners in FC 27?
After picking the delivery target, the camera moves into the box and you can move, switch, make runs and shield. Short corners are excluded. Hold R1/RB before the delivery for avoidance.
What are the new runs in FC 27?
Triggered Curved Runs (L1+R1 / LB+RB) and Pass & Follow Runs (L1+R1+X / LB+RB+A). Manual runs stop after a limited distance; trigger the command again to continue.
Are through passes assisted in FC 27?
Ground and lobbed through passes no longer steer toward open lanes, and dinked passes are fully manual, so your aim matters more.
Did Title Update 1.1.0 change gameplay balance?
No. EA states v1.1.0 (27 October 2026) has no gameplay balance and tuning changes.
