WARDOGS Error Codes & Crash Fixes WD-L020, Kicks & Queue Issues

Updated October 20269 min readBy

Most WARDOGS error codes and crashes trace back to three issues BULKHEAD has officially addressed: the Windows 11 WD-L020 crash, the launch-week login and queue overload, and the Patch 0.11 server browser overhaul. This guide collects every fix BULKHEAD has actually published in its Steam patch notes, plus the general PC troubleshooting steps worth trying when an error isn't officially documented — and says so plainly when that's the case, instead of guessing at what a code means.

01Quick Fixes by Symptom

Start here, then jump to the matching section below for the full explanation:

02WD-L020 Crash on Windows 11

The WD-L020 crash hit Windows 11 players specifically, and BULKHEAD's Update 0.1.2 patch notes (Sept 30, 2026) state it plainly: the crash was caused by Windows update KB5124010 interacting badly with the game, not a WARDOGS-only bug, and Update 0.1.2 fixes it.

  1. Make sure Steam has actually applied Update 0.1.2 or later — right-click WARDOGS in your Steam library, choose Properties, then Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
  2. Install any pending Windows updates rather than trying to block or uninstall KB5124010 specifically — the fix shipped on BULKHEAD's side, not by reverting the Windows patch.
  3. Restart your PC once both updates have finished installing.
  4. If WD-L020 still appears after that, treat it as a new, unrelated crash and work through the general crash steps later in this guide.

03Failed to Authenticate, Access Denied & Error Code 114

As of this writing, BULKHEAD has not published an explanation of what specific numeric codes like "error code 114" or generic "access denied" messages mean — this guide won't invent one. What is documented officially is the launch-week login crisis (see the next section), which produced authentication failures for a large share of players at once.

If the error is hitting large numbers of players at the same time, it's almost always BULKHEAD's servers, not your setup — check the official status channels below before troubleshooting further.

04Kicked From a Match, Logged Out, or Stuck in a Queue

This was the single biggest launch-week problem. PCGamesN quoted BULKHEAD UI/UX Director Howard Philpott on the scale of it: "When you're seeing 300,000 people waiting in the queue it's excruciating." Reported figures included a 365,000 peak concurrent player count and around 168,000 stuck in queue at once, with only about 10% of login attempts succeeding per second at the worst point.

BULKHEAD's Sept 10 Launch Stability Hotfix #1 addressed this directly — a forced client restart plus controlled, batched login releases (about 10,000 players released at a time using fresh Valve login tickets) to fix players unable to join servers, players kicked mid-session, and extended queue times. Patch 0.11 (Sept 12) followed with increased Asia server capacity and a temporary +5% community-server cash bonus as an apology for the disruption.

If you're being removed from a match now rather than during that launch window, it may not be a connection bug at all: BULKHEAD's Sept 30 (Update 0.1.2) patch notes confirm accounts caught abusing cash/XP exploits get their progression reset and risk a permanent ban. A sudden kick alongside a progression reset is anti-cheat enforcement, not a crash.

05No Servers Showing in the Browser

Patch 0.11 (Sept 12, 2026) overhauled the server browser into separate Official and Community tabs, with persistent Community server IDs, text search, and filters — officially confirmed in BULKHEAD's own patch notes. If you're only looking at one tab, it can look like there are no servers when the other tab is full of them.

06Mic and VOIP Not Working

WARDOGS' own Steam store description confirms local, proximity-based voice chat as an official feature — it's tied together with teammates nearby, not a separate squad voice channel (BULKHEAD hasn't published anything about a dedicated squad voice system, so don't expect one). BULKHEAD's Sept 9 Pre-Load patch notes list dedicated voice-chat reliability fixes going into launch, so some early mic bugs are already addressed.

07Crashes on Launch or Mid-Match (General Steps)

These are the standard steps worth trying for any crash that isn't WD-L020 specifically — BULKHEAD hasn't published a general crash-code reference, so this is ordinary PC troubleshooting, not official WARDOGS advice:

  1. Verify integrity of game files through Steam's Properties > Installed Files menu.
  2. Update your GPU drivers through NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel's own driver tool — several of BULKHEAD's patches (including Sept 9 and Sept 12) specifically targeted GPU-related crashes.
  3. Install any pending Windows updates.
  4. Close background overlays and capture software (Discord overlay, GPU vendor overlays, recording tools) that can conflict with the game.
  5. Double-check your PC meets WARDOGS' official minimum specs (Steam listing: 64-bit Windows 10, Intel i5-8600/Ryzen 5 3500, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1660/RX 590) — undersized hardware produces crashes that look like bugs but aren't.
  6. Make sure you're on the latest patch (Update 0.1.2 or newer); multiple WARDOGS updates have shipped dedicated crash fixes on top of each other.
  7. As a last resort, uninstall and reinstall the game.

08Steam Family Sharing and Shared Copies

If you're trying to play on a copy shared through Steam Family Sharing, it won't work — and that's by design, not a bug. BULKHEAD disabled Family Sharing for WARDOGS on Sept 18, 2026, after accounts used it to dodge bans; PCGamesN quoted BULKHEAD CEO Joe Brammer on the decision: "The $40 price tag is the best anti-cheat." There's no workaround: playing WARDOGS currently requires owning your own copy.

09Linux, Steam Deck & Proton Status

WARDOGS is Windows-only on its own Steam platform listing at Early Access launch — there's no native Mac or Linux build. During the Sept 5 open beta, BULKHEAD clarified that native Linux/Proton support "may come later," without committing to a date. Until that changes, treat Linux and Steam Deck as unsupported: it may or may not run under Proton, and anti-cheat behavior on an unsupported platform isn't something BULKHEAD has made any promises about.

10Where to Check Live Server Status

Because WARDOGS is a live Early Access game with frequent hotfixes, the fastest way to tell "is this me or is this everyone" is to check BULKHEAD's own channels before deep troubleshooting:

11What's Changing Next

BULKHEAD shipped two more small hotfixes on Oct 2, 2026: a Security & Stability Hotfix (roughly an hour of downtime for unspecified security/stability issues) and an IR Goggles & CWIS Balance Hotfix, which pulled IR Rangefinders from the vendor until Season 02 and corrected an over-nerfed CWIS kill time. Season 02 itself is confirmed for October 15, 2026, with new map conditions, equipment, and balance reworks — which means some of the fixes and workarounds above may be superseded quickly. This guide will be updated as new patches land; always check the official Steam news hub linked above for the current state first.

FAQ

What does WARDOGS error code WD-L020 mean?

WD-L020 was a crash affecting Windows 11 players, caused by Windows update KB5124010 conflicting with the game rather than a WARDOGS-only bug. BULKHEAD's Update 0.1.2 patch notes (Sept 30, 2026) confirm it as fixed in that build — make sure you're updated to 0.1.2 or later.

Why do I keep getting kicked from WARDOGS servers?

During launch week (Sept 10–12, 2026) this was a server-capacity and login-queue crisis, fixed by BULKHEAD's stability hotfixes and Patch 0.11's capacity increases. If you're being kicked now, it can also be anti-cheat enforcement — BULKHEAD's Sept 30 (Update 0.1.2) patch notes confirm accounts caught abusing cash/XP exploits get flagged, have progression reset, and risk a permanent ban.

What does "failed to authenticate with online services" mean in WARDOGS?

BULKHEAD hasn't published an official explanation for this specific message. Check Steam's own service status first, then fully restart Steam, verify your PC's clock is synced, and verify your game files — these are general causes, not confirmed WARDOGS-specific ones.

Why are no servers showing up in the WARDOGS server browser?

Patch 0.11 (Sept 12, 2026) split the browser into separate Official and Community tabs with new filters. Check you're on the right tab and that no filter is hiding every match before assuming the server list is actually empty.

Why isn't my mic or VOIP working in WARDOGS?

WARDOGS uses local, proximity-based voice chat, confirmed on its official Steam store page. Check Windows microphone permissions and your in-game push-to-talk bind first; BULKHEAD also shipped dedicated voice-chat reliability fixes in its Sept 9 Pre-Load patch.

Can I play WARDOGS through Steam Family Sharing?

No. BULKHEAD disabled Family Sharing for WARDOGS on Sept 18, 2026, after accounts used it to dodge bans, and there's no workaround — you need your own copy of the game.
