The Witcher 4 Returning Characters — Who's Confirmed, Who Isn't

With The Witcher 4 years from release, CD Projekt Red has confirmed far less about its returning cast than the rumor mill suggests. Here's exactly who's locked in, who's genuinely unknown, and what the people closest to the answer — including one voice actor who says nobody's told her anything — have actually said.

01Confirmed So Far: Ciri and Geralt

As of now, CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed exactly two returning characters from The Witcher 3.

• Ciri — confirmed as the game's sole playable protagonist.
• Geralt of Rivia — confirmed to appear in a supporting capacity, with CD Projekt Red saying he'll "make his presence known," and Doug Cockle returning to voice him.

No other Witcher 3 character has received an equivalent, on-the-record confirmation.

02Yennefer: Unconfirmed, and Her Own Voice Actor Doesn't Know Either

Yennefer of Vengerberg is the character fans ask about most, and there's genuinely nothing official to report. Denise Gough, who voiced Yennefer throughout The Witcher 3, told Eurogamer she has zero information about a possible return: "I don't know any of this."

• A separate report describes Gough as saying she's "been kept completely in the dark" about whether the character is coming back.
• That silence cuts both ways — CD Projekt Red hasn't confirmed Yennefer, but it also hasn't said she's out. Not being able to reach the original voice actor for comment is not the same as an official announcement either way.

03Triss Merigold and Everyone Else: No Official Word

Triss Merigold, Dandelion, Zoltan, Eskel, Lambert, and the rest of The Witcher 3's supporting cast are all in the same position: no confirmation, no denial. Any article naming them as "likely to return" is making an inference from the books or from character logistics (lifespan, location, relationship to Ciri) rather than reporting a CD Projekt Red statement — treat those as educated guesses, not facts.

04Why Witcher 3's Branching Endings Make This Harder to Confirm

Part of the reason CD Projekt Red may be moving cautiously here is structural: The Witcher 3 let players determine the fates of several major characters, including whether Ciri becomes a witcher, an empress, or dies at the Killing Fields, and whether characters like Triss end up with Geralt at all. CD Projekt Red has said it wants players who chose alternate fates for Ciri not to "feel cheated" by whatever The Witcher 4 locks in as canon — a genuinely harder problem than simply deciding whether a fan-favorite character is popular enough to bring back.
