Stardew Valley Professions Guide — Best Picks for Every Skill

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Choosing the right Stardew Valley professions at level 5 and level 10 can double your income, speed up your farm, and change how the whole game feels. Each of the five skills — Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, and Combat — offers two paths at level 5 that gate two more at level 10. Pick wrong and you leave serious gold on the table; pick right and the farm practically runs itself.

01How Professions Work

Every skill unlocks a profession choice at level 5 and again at level 10. The level-5 choice gates which two options appear at level 10, so the tree branches early. Professions are permanent until you visit the Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers and pay 10,000g to respec one skill. After paying, you sleep that night and the level-5 and level-10 screens appear again for that skill. Only one skill can be respecced per visit, but you can return as often as you like.

The golden rule: Artisan is the single most powerful profession in the game, and nearly every meta recommendation is built around reaching it. Everything else is context-dependent.

02Farming Professions

Farming is the most impactful skill for late-game income. The level-5 split is the most consequential choice in the entire profession system.

Best pick: Tiller → Artisan. If the farm revolves around pigs for truffles or a wool operation, Rancher → Shepherd is a distant second.

03Mining Professions

Mining professions affect ore yields, bar prices, and gem drops. Neither path is overpowered, but Miner has the smoother early-game impact.

Best pick: Miner → Blacksmith for most players. Geologist → Gemologist is better only with a dedicated diamond Crystalarium setup.

04Foraging Professions

Foraging professions scale surprisingly well. Gatherer unlocks the best level-10 option and also applies to truffles collected by pigs.

Best pick: Gatherer → Botanist, without exception. The iridium-quality bonus on every foraged item is exceptional, and the truffle synergy makes it even stronger on animal farms.

05Fishing Professions

Fishing is a reliable early income source. The profession choice matters most if fishing is a core activity or if crab pots are part of a passive setup.

Best pick: Fisher → Angler for active fishers. For passive crab-pot farms, Trapper → Luremaster removes bait maintenance entirely.

06Combat Professions

Combat professions affect damage, survivability, and crit potential. They matter most during Skull Cavern dives and the Volcano on Ginger Island.

  1. Fighter → Brute — best all-round combat pick; reliable damage and HP for Skull Cavern.
  2. Fighter → Defender — tankiest option; good for beginners.
  3. Scout → Desperado — high ceiling for min-maxers with crit gear, weaker without it.

FAQ

Can professions be changed in Stardew Valley?

Yes. The Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers lets you respec one skill per visit for 10,000g. After paying, you sleep and the level-5 and level-10 profession screens reappear for the chosen skill. The Sewers are unlocked by donating 60 items to the museum to receive the Rusty Key from Gunther.

Is Artisan really the best profession?

By most measures, yes. Artisan applies a 40% price bonus to all goods produced in a Keg, Preserves Jar, Cheese Press, Mayonnaise Machine, Oil Maker, Loom, or Beehive. Combined with the 10% Tiller bonus on the crops feeding those machines, a mature keg operation out-earns nearly any other strategy.

Does the Gatherer double-harvest chance apply to truffles?

Yes. Gatherer's 20% chance to double a foraged item applies to truffles rooted up by pigs. Combined with Botanist at level 10, every truffle is automatically iridium quality and worth far more, making a large pig barn one of the strongest late-game income sources.

Which professions are best for a money-focused farm?

The strongest income trio is Tiller → Artisan (Farming), Gatherer → Botanist (Foraging), and Fisher → Angler (Fishing). Artisan covers processed goods, Botanist maximises forage and truffle value, and Angler boosts fishing revenue. Mining and Combat professions have less direct impact on daily income.
