Stardew Valley Fishing Guide — How to Fish and Catch Everything
Fishing is one of the most rewarding skills in Stardew Valley — and notoriously the hardest for new players to get started with. The timing mini-game feels nearly impossible at first, and many beginners give up after their first session. This guide explains exactly how the mini-game works, which spots to fish in each season, the best equipment upgrades, and how to turn fishing into a steady early-game income source.
01The Fishing Mini-Game: How It Actually Works
When a fish bites, a vertical mini-game launches. You see a green bar (your cursor, controlled by clicking or holding the action button) and a fish icon that moves up and down unpredictably. Your goal is to keep the green bar on top of the fish for long enough to fill the progress meter on the right side.
Key mechanics to understand:
- The green bar falls naturally: gravity pulls it down. Click/hold to push it up. The rhythm is: hold to raise, release to drop — tap rapidly for fine control.
- The fish icon has a pattern: different fish have different difficulty scores that control how erratically the icon moves. Easy fish (like Smallmouth Bass) move slowly and predictably. Legendary fish (like the Legend) dart violently and are designed to be very difficult.
- The progress meter drains if you lose the fish: but it does not reset — you just need to catch back up. A brief miss does not mean failure.
- Treasure chests can appear: a small chest icon sometimes appears alongside the fish. Hovering over it while maintaining the fish fill fills a separate treasure meter. Successfully catching both the fish and the treasure gives you a bonus item. Prioritise the fish — the treasure is optional.
- Fishing level affects the bar size: at Fishing level 0, the green bar is small and the game is genuinely difficult. By Fishing level 5, the bar is noticeably larger. By level 10, the bar covers nearly half the screen and most fish become easy. Stick with it — it gets dramatically easier as you level up.
02How to Level Fishing Fast
Fishing experience is earned from every catch, with bonus XP for higher-quality fish and faster catches. The fastest way to level fishing in Year 1:
- Fish in the Mountain Lake on rainy days: the large lake north of the farm (near the Mines entrance) has a reliable cast spot at the far right bank. Catfish appear in rain and are worth significantly more XP than common fish.
- Use Bait (requires Fishing level 2 + Fiberglass Rod): Bait dramatically reduces the time between nibbles — you spend more time catching, less time waiting. Craft it from Bug Meat (dropped by cave insects in the Mines): 1 Bug Meat = 5 Bait.
- Use the Training Rod for the first few days: the Training Rod (500g from Willy's shop) is special — it enlarges the green bar significantly, making the mini-game manageable for complete beginners. The tradeoff is that it cannot use Bait and cannot catch legendary fish, but for Fishing levels 1–4 it is invaluable.
- Eat food that boosts Fishing: Dish O' The Sea (made from 2 Sardines + 1 Hashbrowns) gives +3 Fishing for 220 seconds. Trout Soup gives +1. Chub (a common catch itself) gives +1 if eaten directly.
- Cast from the pier in Pelican Town in Summer: deep water casts yield better fish and more XP per cast. The longer your cast (aim the rod to the top of the cast bar for maximum distance), the better the fish quality.
03Best Fishing Rods and Equipment
Willy's Fish Shop on the beach is open every day except Tuesdays. Visit him early to upgrade your gear:
- Bamboo Pole (free): Willy gives you this on the first morning. Very basic, cannot use attachments.
- Training Rod (500g): Enlarges the green bar significantly. Cannot use bait or tackle. Buy this if the mini-game is too hard at the start.
- Fiberglass Rod (1,800g, unlocks at Fishing level 2): Can use Bait. The standard rod for the rest of Year 1. Buy this as soon as you reach level 2.
- Iridium Rod (7,500g, unlocks at Fishing level 6): Can use both Bait and Tackle simultaneously. The endgame fishing rod. Worth every penny once you reach level 6.
- Bait (crafted or bought): Reduces wait time between bites. Craft from Bug Meat (1:5 ratio) or buy from Willy at 5g each.
- Tackle (Iridium Rod only): Spinners increase bite frequency; Trap Bobbers slow fish movement during the mini-game (excellent for beginners); Dressed Spinners are the best DPS option for experienced fishers. Cork Bobbers increase green bar size — combine with high fish difficulty for a safety net.
04Fish by Season and Location
Each season has unique fish only available in specific weather and locations. Here are the most valuable fish to target each season:
- Spring — Catfish (River/Forest Pond, raining only): 200g base, 300g silver, 400g gold. One of the best early-game earners. Only appears during rain, so watch the weather forecast.
- Spring — Shad (River, raining only): 60g but fast to catch and plentiful in Spring rain.
- Spring — Legend (Mountain Lake, raining, Fishing 10+): 5,000g base. The highest-value fish in the base game, only catchable from the Mountain Lake during rain in Spring when Fishing level is 10. Legendary fish — only 1 per save file.
- Summer — Pufferfish (Ocean, sunny, 12 PM–4 PM): 200g, liked by Demetrius. Limited catch window — time your ocean trips accordingly.
- Summer — Octopus (Ocean, any weather, 6 AM–1 PM): 150g, loved by Willy. Required for the Night Fishing Bundle.
- Summer — Tuna (Ocean, any weather): 100g, very common and fast to catch — good for bulk income.
- Fall — Salmon (River): 75g, extremely common in Fall. Salmon is the best fishing target for newcomers in Fall — high spawn rate and medium difficulty.
- Fall — Tiger Trout (River, raining, Fishing 5+): 150g. Difficult to catch (very erratic movement) but worth pursuing for the Community Center.
- Fall — Albacore (Ocean, 6 AM–11 AM or 6 PM–2 AM): 75g, frequent in the ocean during fall morning and evening windows.
- Winter — Squid (Ocean, night only): 80g. The Winter Ocean night window (6 PM–2 AM) is excellent — Squid and Midnight Carp stack up quickly.
- Winter — Midnight Carp (Mountain Lake or Forest Pond, night only): 150g. Good earner during long winter evenings.
- All seasons — Carp (Mountain Lake): 30g, easiest fish in the game. Useful for early fishing skill grinding when other fish are too hard.
Legendary Fish (one per save file each): Legend (Spring, Mountain Lake, rain, Fishing 10), Mutant Carp (The Sewers, any season), Glacierfish (Winter, Arrowhead Island south tip), Crimsonfish (Summer, East Pier, Fishing 5+), Angler (Fall, north of Jodi/Kent/Sam house bridge, Fishing 3+).
05Fishing for Income: Is It Worth It?
Fishing is one of the best income sources in Year 1, before your farm is fully productive:
- Spring fishing income: a rainy Spring day targeting Catfish can net 5,000–10,000g in a single in-game day. That pays for the first backpack upgrade and multiple seed packets.
- Iridium-quality fish: at Fishing level 10 with the Fisher profession (level 5 choice), all fish sell for 25% more. Adding the Angler profession (level 10 choice from the Fisher path) adds another 50% to all fish prices. An Iridium Catfish with Angler sells for 600g — six times the base value.
- Fish Ponds: once unlocked (requires completing the Fish Tank bundle in the Community Center), Fish Ponds let you house fish and harvest roe and other items passively. Sturgeon Ponds produce Sturgeon Roe → Caviar (500g) and are the most profitable passive fish operation.
The two Fishing profession paths at level 5: Fisher (fish worth 25% more) or Trapper (crab pots require fewer materials). Fisher → Angler (all fish worth 50% more at level 10) is the best choice for income. Trapper → Mariner (crab pots never catch trash) is only useful if you build a large crab pot operation.
FAQ
Why is Stardew Valley fishing so hard?
At Fishing level 0–2, the green bar is very small and most fish move faster than beginners expect. The difficulty drops significantly by level 5 as the bar grows. Use the Training Rod (500g from Willy) for the first few days — it gives you a larger bar specifically to help beginners. Once you reach Fishing level 5, most fish become manageable with a normal rod.
What is the best fishing spot in Stardew Valley?
For income, the River in Pelican Town or the Mountain Lake are generally the best all-around spots. The Mountain Lake is especially good on rainy days for Catfish in Spring and Fall. For legendary fish, each requires a specific location — the Legend only spawns in the Mountain Lake in Spring during rain at Fishing level 10.
Where do I get a better fishing rod in Stardew Valley?
Buy rods from Willy's Fish Shop on the beach. The Fiberglass Rod (1,800g) unlocks at Fishing level 2 and accepts Bait. The Iridium Rod (7,500g) unlocks at Fishing level 6 and accepts both Bait and Tackle. Willy's shop is closed on Tuesdays.
What fish do I need for the Community Center in Stardew Valley?
The Fish Tank bundle requires: Sunfish, Catfish, Shad, Tiger Trout (Spring/Summer/Fall bundle); Tuna, Red Snapper, Tilapia (Summer/Fall bundle); Walleye, Bream, Eel (Fall bundle); Sardine, Eel, Red Snapper, Squid (Quality Fish bundle — gold quality only); Pufferfish, Octopus, Ghostfish, Stonefish, Ice Pip, Lava Eel (Specialty Fish bundle). The legendary Crab Pot bundle requires five different species from crab pots.
How do I catch the legendary fish in Stardew Valley?
Each legendary fish has strict conditions: Legend (Spring, Mountain Lake, raining, Fishing level 10+), Crimsonfish (Summer, East Pier in Pelican Town, Fishing level 5+), Angler (Fall, above the Jodi/Kent house bridge, Fishing level 3+), Glacierfish (Winter, south tip of Arrowhead Island in Cindersnap Forest), Mutant Carp (The Sewers, unlocked after donating 60 artifacts to the Museum). Legendary fish are very difficult mini-game encounters — bring Tackle and eat Fishing buff food.
