Stardew Valley Gift Guide — Best Gifts for Every Villager

Updated July 202610 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Giving gifts is the primary way to build friendships — and eventually romance — with Pelican Town's villagers. The system is simple on the surface: give an item, earn heart points. But knowing which gifts unlock the biggest rewards and which gifts tank a relationship unexpectedly makes the difference between years of grinding and reaching 10-heart friendships in a single season. This guide covers how friendship works and the best gifts for every villager.

01How the Gift System Works

You can give each villager up to 2 gifts per week. On birthdays, gifts are worth 8× their normal value — a villager birthday is the single most efficient gifting day of the year. The calendar in Pierre's shop (or your own home) shows all birthdays.

Friendship points per gift tier:

One friendship heart equals 250 points. At maximum gifts per week (2 loved gifts × 80 points = 160 points) it takes roughly 2 in-game weeks of dedicated gifting to gain one heart. Hitting birthdays with loved gifts can shortcut this significantly.

Friends decay: if you do not talk to a villager for 2+ weeks, friendship points slowly decrease. Greeting them (even without a gift) resets the decay timer. You do not need to constantly give gifts — just maintain contact.

02Universal Loved Gifts (Work on Almost Everyone)

These items are loved by most villagers and are efficient to produce or buy in bulk. A few villagers dislike or hate specific universal-loved items — exceptions are noted in individual profiles below.

For routine gifting, focus on each villager's individual loved gifts that are practical to produce on your farm. The universal items are too rare or valuable to spend on weekly gifts.

FAQ

What are the best gifts to give in Stardew Valley?

Universal loved gifts that are practical to obtain include: Prismatic Shard, Golden Pumpkin, Pearl, and Rabbit's Foot (loved by almost everyone). For individual villagers, the best recurring gifts are items you can produce on your farm — Pale Ale for Pam, Amethyst for Abigail, Sunflowers for Haley, or Leek for George. Birthday gifts are worth 8× normal value, so always save a loved gift for that day.

How many gifts can you give per week in Stardew Valley?

Two gifts per week per villager. Birthday gifts count as one of the two weekly gifts but are worth eight times the normal friendship points. On non-birthday weeks, give two gifts; on a birthday week, one birthday gift is worth more than a full week of two normal gifts.

What gifts does everyone hate in Stardew Valley?

Most villagers dislike receiving Joja Cola or trash items found while fishing. A few specific villagers dislike items that others love — for example, Penny dislikes Rabbit's Foot (which most villagers love). Always check an individual's preferences before gifting something unusual.

How do I romance someone in Stardew Valley?

Build friendship to 8 hearts with any of the 12 romance candidates (Abigail, Alex, Elliott, Emily, Haley, Harvey, Leah, Maru, Penny, Sam, Sebastian, Shane). Then purchase a Bouquet from Pierre's shop in Spring/Summer for 200g and give it to them. This starts a dating relationship and unlocks the path to 14 hearts. Reach 14 hearts and obtain a Mermaid's Pendant (from the Old Mariner on the beach during rain) to propose marriage.

Do friendships decay in Stardew Valley?

Yes, if you do not interact with a villager for 2 weeks (14 days), their friendship slowly decreases. Simply talking to them (without giving a gift) once per week prevents the decay entirely. Friendship with your spouse also decays without daily interaction — they need gifts too.
