Stardew Valley Greenhouse Guide — Unlock It and Max Every Tile

Updated July 20267 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

The Stardew Valley greenhouse is the single most powerful farming upgrade in the game. Once repaired, it lets crops grow in any season, protects them from lightning and crows, and gives fruit trees a permanent harvest loop — all year, every year. Unlock it early enough and it becomes the engine behind virtually every late-game money strategy.

01How to Unlock the Greenhouse

There are two ways to unlock the greenhouse. The most common route is through the Community Center: complete all six bundles in the Pantry room and the derelict greenhouse on your farm is repaired overnight. The second route is the Joja path — with a Joja Community Membership, you can buy the greenhouse upgrade from the Joja Community Development Form for 35,000g, also repaired by the next morning.

The Pantry bundles are the more common unlock path. Here is what they require:

The Artisan and Quality Crops bundles are the usual bottlenecks. Truffle Oil requires a Pig (which needs a Deluxe Barn), and gold-quality crops are easiest with Farming skill level 10 or Quality Fertilizer. Most players unlock the greenhouse in Year 1 Fall or Year 2 Spring.

02What Makes the Greenhouse Special

The greenhouse is not just a heated shed — it fundamentally changes the rules of farming in several important ways.

03Layout: Crops and Sprinklers

The interior plantable zone is a 10×12 grid of 120 tiles. A one-tile-wide wooden border surrounds this plot; you cannot plant crops on the border itself, but you can place sprinklers on it so they reach the crop tiles within range.

The most efficient setup for the crop area uses six Iridium Sprinklers. An Iridium Sprinkler waters a 5×5 area, and six placed with correct spacing cover all 120 crop tiles. Each sprinkler occupies one tile, leaving 114 plantable tiles for crops. It is worth holding off on planting until you can craft or buy Iridium Sprinklers — the time savings are enormous.

To craft an Iridium Sprinkler you need Farming level 9 plus a Gold Bar, an Iridium Bar, and a Battery Pack. Alternatively, buy them from Krobus on Fridays for 10,000g each.

  1. Place all six Iridium Sprinklers first before filling crop tiles — repositioning later destroys crops underneath.
  2. Spread sprinklers evenly across the 10×12 area so their ranges cover every corner tile.
  3. Fill every remaining tile with your chosen crop, planting in the same session so harvests stay synchronised.
  4. Check coverage by hovering each sprinkler — every crop tile should show the watering indicator.

04Fruit Trees Around the Border

The border and the region between the border and the greenhouse walls can support up to 18 fruit trees. Trees planted here produce fruit every single day once mature (28 days to grow), regardless of season. With 18 trees, that is 18 fruit per day from slots that would otherwise sit empty.

A few rules apply for greenhouse tree planting:

For profit, Banana trees are often a top pick: Bananas process into Banana Wine, and they can only be grown in the greenhouse or on Ginger Island.

05Best Crops to Grow

With 114 plantable tiles and year-round growing, the greenhouse rewards high-value perennial crops — plants that regrow after each harvest without replanting.

The standard endgame layout is 114 tiles of Ancient Fruit feeding a barn full of Kegs. With a full Keg setup, the greenhouse alone can generate well over 200,000g per season.

06Tips to Maximise Greenhouse Profit

A few strategic choices separate a good greenhouse from a great one:

  1. Get the Artisan profession (Farming level 10). It raises all artisan goods by 40%, turning 1,650g Ancient Fruit Wine into 2,310g bottles.
  2. Propagate Ancient Fruit seeds with a Seed Maker. Run each harvest through a Seed Maker to roughly double your stock every 7 days until all 114 tiles are filled.
  3. Build Kegs before filling the greenhouse. Ancient Fruit takes 7 days to process, so you need roughly 114+ Kegs to avoid a backlog.
  4. Ensure full sprinkler coverage so you never lose a harvest day to unwatered soil.
  5. Plant Banana or Mango trees in the border slots if you have Ginger Island saplings — they cannot grow on the mainland farm.
  6. Do not put Scarecrows inside — they are useless in the greenhouse and waste a tile.

FAQ

How many tiles can you plant in the Stardew Valley greenhouse?

The crop area is a 10×12 grid of 120 tiles. If you use six Iridium Sprinklers, each occupies one tile, leaving 114 plantable tiles for crops. The border around the crop zone cannot hold crops but can hold fruit trees and sprinklers.

Do crops die in winter inside the greenhouse?

No. The greenhouse is fully season-independent — crops grow and regrow year-round without dying at the end of any season. A perennial crop like Ancient Fruit planted in Fall will keep regrowing through every season after that indefinitely.

Is Ancient Fruit or Starfruit better for the greenhouse?

Ancient Fruit is better for most players because it regrows every 7 days with no replanting cost, making it completely passive after setup. Starfruit produces more valuable wine per bottle but requires replanting from 400g seeds each cycle. Fill the greenhouse with Ancient Fruit first, then pivot some Keg capacity to Starfruit once your infrastructure is solid.

Can you plant fruit trees in the greenhouse?

Yes. Up to 18 fruit trees can be planted in the border region around the crop plot. They cannot go in the four corners, and each needs one clear tile of separation. Once mature, greenhouse fruit trees produce one fruit every single day regardless of season — a major advantage over outdoor trees.
