Stardew Valley Ginger Island Guide: Unlock It and What to Do There

Updated July 20269 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Ginger Island is Stardew Valley's biggest post-game destination — a tropical map added in the 1.5 update with its own farm, dungeon, and questline built around 130 hidden Golden Walnuts. Getting there takes real preparation, and once you land there is a lot to miss if you do not know what to look for. Here is how to unlock it and where to focus once you arrive.

01Step 1: Finish the Community Center or the Joja Route

Willy will not even mention Ginger Island until you finish one of the game's two main progression routes: completing all Community Center bundles, or buying out the Joja Community Development Form at JojaMart. Either route triggers the same follow-up — a letter from Willy inviting you to the back of his Fish Shop.

There is no way to skip this requirement. If you are early in a save and specifically want Ginger Island, prioritise finishing whichever route you are already on.

02Step 2: Repair Willy's Boat

Once Willy's invitation triggers, visit the back room of the Fish Shop to see the broken boat. Repairing it costs three separate donations, and you can hand them in as you collect them rather than all at once:

After the last donation, the boat is repaired overnight. From then on, buy a ticket for 1,000g from Willy at the Fish Shop (open from 8am) to sail to Ginger Island any day the shop is open.

03Golden Walnuts: The Island's Main Currency

Everything on Ginger Island is gated behind Golden Walnuts — a special collectible unique to the island, separate from normal currency. There are 130 in total, hidden across exploration, farming, fishing, combat, digging, and puzzle rewards.

Do not stress about finding every walnut on your first few trips. Many require specific tools (a Machete for cutting vines, Magnifying Glass for hidden qi seeds, a completed Mermaid puzzle) that you will only get partway through the questline, so early visits will always leave some out of reach.

04The Island Farm and Farmhouse

West of the dock is a second, smaller farm plot with its own dilapidated farmhouse. Talk to the Parrot near the farmhouse and pay 20 Golden Walnuts to repair it — that unlocks a tropical bed, a kitchen, and a Shipping Bin outside, letting you sleep on the island without sailing back to the mainland each night.

The island farm plot itself is small but has volcano-adjacent ash soil good for certain crops (notably Taro Root and Pineapple, both island-exclusive), and Qi later offers quests tied to farming it.

05The Beach Resort

The ruined building near the dock can be rebuilt into a Beach Resort for 20 Golden Walnuts, paid to the Parrot Express parrot standing nearby. Once built, a random rotating group of Pelican Town villagers visits the resort daily between 11am and 6pm (skipped on rain and festival days) — it doubles as a low-pressure way to raise friendship hearts in a relaxed setting.

06The Volcano Dungeon

At the island's north end is the Volcano Dungeon, a 10-floor combat and mining dungeon similar in structure to Skull Cavern — most floors are randomly generated. It is a major Golden Walnut source: up to 17 Golden Walnuts can be earned there through mining, chests, and combat drops.

07Qi's Walnut Room

Once you have banked 100 Golden Walnuts total, a secret door on the far west beach opens into Qi's Walnut Room. Inside, Mr. Qi offers a rotating set of special quests with rewards not available anywhere else, including the Galaxy Soul (needed to upgrade certain weapons to their final forge tier) and the Pressure Nozzle (extends sprinkler range by one extra tile in every direction).

This room is meant as a late-game destination — most players do not reach it until well into Year 2 or later, once regular walnut collection and Volcano Dungeon runs have added up.

FAQ

Do I need to finish the Community Center to unlock Ginger Island?

You need to finish either the Community Center bundles or the Joja Community Development Form route — one of the two, not both. Either completion triggers Willy's letter about the boat; there is no other way to start the island questline.

What do I need to fix Willy's boat?

200 Hardwood, 5 Iridium Bars, and 5 Battery Packs, all donated at the back of Willy's Fish Shop. You can hand items in as you collect them rather than gathering everything before your first donation. Once the last item is delivered, the boat is ready the next day, and rides cost 1,000g each from then on.

How many Golden Walnuts are there in total?

130. You need 100 to open Qi's Walnut Room, and all 130 for full island completion. Some walnuts are locked behind tools and puzzle solutions you only unlock partway through the island's questline, so expect to revisit multiple times.

Can I sleep on Ginger Island instead of sailing back every night?

Yes, once you repair the island farmhouse for 20 Golden Walnuts. It adds a tropical bed (and a kitchen and Shipping Bin) on the island, so you no longer need to sail back to the mainland farm before the game forces you to pass out.

What is the Volcano Dungeon and is it worth doing?

It is a 10-floor dungeon at the island's north end with Skull Cavern-style randomized combat floors, a shop on floor 5, and the weapon-upgrading Forge on floor 10. It is one of the best sources of Golden Walnuts (up to 17) and the only way to get Cinder Shards, so it is worth doing even outside of full completion runs.
