Silksong: Where to Go When You're Stuck
Silksong is a Metroidvania, which means getting stuck is part of the design — but some of its dead-ends and ability gates are genuinely confusing. This spoiler-light guide covers the most common places players get lost, the abilities you need to move on, and a reliable method for finding your next destination when the map seems to end.
If you are stuck in Silksong, the usual cause is a missing traversal ability or an unbought map. To leave Far Fields you need the Drifter's Cloak (which grants a silk dash); buy area maps from Shakra the cartographer so you can see unexplored exits; and activate Bellway fast-travel stations (they cost Rosaries) to cut backtracking. When lost, return to recently greyed-out exits on your map and try them once you have a new ability. This guide stays spoiler-light.
01First: Buy Maps and Read Them
Half of all 'I'm stuck' moments come from exploring blind. Silksong has a cartographer just like Hollow Knight did:
- Find Shakra, the wandering map-seller (the equivalent of Cornifer) — you hear her humming in each new area. Buy the area map from her.
- Buy maps from the shop in the hub area to fill in regions you have partly explored.
- Check your map for greyed-out or unexplored exits — black gaps and edges you have not walked into are your leads.
- Mark spots you could not reach mentally — most will open once you gain a new traversal ability.
02The Most Common Stuck Point: Far Fields
Far Fields is the area that traps the most players, because progressing onward requires an ability you might not have:
- You need the Drifter's Cloak, which grants a silk dash, to cross gaps and continue past Far Fields.
- It is obtained by gathering materials from an NPC in a missable spot near the area — easy to enter Far Fields and feel walled-in without it.
- If you are looping the same rooms here, the answer is almost always 'go get the dash ability', not 'fight through'.
- Once you have the Cloak, previously impossible gaps in Far Fields and beyond open up.
03Use Fast-Travel and Abilities to Open Routes
Silksong gates progress behind movement abilities and a paid fast-travel network:
- Activate Bellway fast-travel stations — they cost Rosaries to unlock, but they save enormous backtracking across Pharloom.
- Each new traversal ability (dashes, climbs, grapples, and later movement upgrades) retroactively opens earlier dead-ends — keep a mental list of where you were blocked.
- When you gain an ability, revisit recent locked spots rather than pushing into new territory blind.
- Some areas are intentional dead-ends (exploration-only zones) — if a path loops back with nothing new, it may simply be a side pocket, not the way forward.
04A Reliable Method When Truly Lost
When nothing seems to work, run this checklist:
- Open your map and look for any edge, gap, or door you have not entered.
- Return to your most recent new ability and ask which old obstacle it now beats (a gap too wide, a wall too high, a surface you could not cling to).
- Revisit the last Bench area and explore every exit from it methodically.
- Talk to NPCs — many drop hints about where to go or hand out quest objectives that point you onward.
- Check for a Wish on the quest board; active quests often lead you toward the next region.
FAQ
How do you get out of Far Fields in Silksong?
You need the Drifter's Cloak, which grants a silk dash, to cross the gaps that block progress out of Far Fields. It is obtained by gathering materials from an NPC near the area, which is easy to miss. If you are looping the same rooms, the solution is to go get the dash ability rather than trying to fight through — once you have it, the previously impossible gaps open up.
How do you find where to go next in Silksong?
First buy the area map from Shakra the cartographer so you can see unexplored exits, then look for any greyed-out edges, gaps, or doors you have not entered. When you gain a new traversal ability, revisit recent spots where you were blocked, since abilities retroactively open old dead-ends. Talking to NPCs and checking active Wishes on the quest board also points you toward the next region.
How does fast travel work in Silksong?
Silksong uses Bellway fast-travel stations, which you must activate by paying Rosaries. Once unlocked, they let you jump between regions and dramatically cut down on backtracking across Pharloom. It is worth spending the currency to activate stations near areas you revisit often, especially as the world opens up and you need to return to earlier zones with new abilities.
Why do I keep hitting dead-ends in Silksong?
Most dead-ends in Silksong are ability gates — gaps too wide, walls too high, or surfaces you cannot yet cling to — that open once you gain the matching traversal upgrade. Some areas are also intentional exploration-only pockets that simply loop back. Buy maps to track which exits you have not tried, and revisit blocked spots each time you earn a new movement ability.
