Steel Soul is Silksong's ultimate test — a permadeath mode where a single death can erase your entire run. It is also the game's main reason to replay, since there is no New Game Plus and Steel Soul hides content you cannot see any other way. This guide covers how to unlock it, the exact permadeath rules, what is exclusive to it, and how to survive.

01How to Unlock Steel Soul Mode

There are two ways to open up Steel Soul:

• Finish the game once — completing a standard playthrough unlocks Steel Soul as a new save option.
• Use the title-screen code — on the main menu, input Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right to unlock it without finishing first.
• Steel Soul is started as its own separate save file, not applied to an existing run.
• It is designed as a fresh challenge run, so you begin a new game in the mode.

02The Permadeath Rules

Steel Soul's defining rule is harsh but has a few important exceptions:

• Dying permanently deletes the save file and returns you to a new game — there is no reload.
• Some scripted deaths do not wipe the save — certain story fights and special memory sequences are exceptions where dying is part of the narrative, not a run-ender.
• Because the penalty is total, caution beats speed — there is no shame in retreating to a Bench.
• Treat every unfamiliar boss and hazard as potentially fatal until you know it.

03Exclusive Steel Soul Content

Steel Soul is not just harder — it adds things you cannot see in a normal run:

• An exclusive boss and a unique quest tied to the mode.
• Exclusive NPCs and items that only appear in Steel Soul.
• A replaced merchant and other small world changes that make the run feel distinct.
• Two achievements: one for completing Steel Soul, and a tougher one for reaching 100% completion without a single death.

The exclusive content is the real reward — it is the main reason to brave the mode beyond the bragging rights.

04Tips for Surviving a Steel Soul Run

Survival comes from preparation and discipline, not reflexes alone:

1. Beat the game on a normal save first — knowing boss patterns and the map turns Steel Soul from terrifying into manageable.
2. Over-upgrade before bosses — collect mask and Silk upgrades, and farm Shell Shards so your Tools are always charged.
3. Bank your Rosaries and play the economy safely — you cannot afford avoidable setbacks.
4. Use defensive Tools (like the Warding Bell to protect healing) and a Crest you have fully mastered.
5. Retreat freely. If a fight is going badly and you can leave, do — a survived run beats a heroic death.
6. Take breaks. Most permadeath losses come from fatigue and impatience, not from the game being unfair.
