Path of Exile 2 Skill Gems & Support Gems Fully Explained
Path of Exile 2 completely reinvents how skill gems work. Instead of socketing coloured gems into gear, every gem reaches you as a blank Uncut Gem that you cut yourself to a skill of your choice. Add up to five Support Gems directly onto each skill, manage a new Spirit resource for persistent effects, and build freely — the system is flexible by design.
01The Uncut Gem System — What Changed from PoE 1
In the original Path of Exile, getting a skill meant finding a pre-cut gem and then finding gear with enough linked sockets to support it. PoE2 scraps that entirely. Every gem that drops arrives as an Uncut Skill Gem, an Uncut Support Gem, or an Uncut Spirit Gem. These blank gems have no function on their own; you must cut them first.
Cutting an Uncut Skill Gem opens a menu showing every skill available to your class at or below the gem's level. Pick one and the gem becomes that active skill permanently. Cutting is irreversible — though a higher-level Uncut Gem can later be used to upgrade an existing skill gem instead of unlocking a new skill.
This puts players in full control: you choose which skills you want rather than hoping the right pre-cut gem drops. No two characters need to be built around whatever happened to fall during their playthrough.
02Gem Levels and Upgrading Existing Skills
Every Uncut Skill Gem has a level stamped on it, and that level determines which skills become available when you cut it and how high a skill can be upgraded. Some powerful skills only appear on higher-level Uncut Gems, gating them behind progression rather than RNG loot.
You do not have to use an Uncut Gem to learn a new skill — you can instead apply it to a skill gem you already own to raise that gem to the Uncut Gem's level. A Level 10 Uncut Skill Gem, for example, can push a Level 7 skill gem straight to Level 10.
- Uncut Skill Gems — cut into active skills (Fireball, Bone Spear, Rolling Slam, etc.)
- Uncut Support Gems — cut into one of the available support modifiers
- Uncut Spirit Gems — the rarest type; cut into persistent buff or meta gems that reserve Spirit
Uncut Gems drop from all enemy types, but Rare monsters and Bosses have higher drop rates. Quest rewards in each Act also provide guaranteed Uncut Gems at appropriate levels, giving a reliable baseline even with unlucky drops.
03Support Gems — Linking Skills Without Linked Gear
Each cut Skill Gem has its own dedicated support sockets built into it. A new skill arrives with two or three open sockets, and you can unlock more (up to a maximum of five support sockets per skill) using a special currency item. That gives a six-link equivalent on every ability, completely independent of your gear.
Support Gems modify the skill they are socketed into — changing behaviour, adding damage types, altering projectile count, granting life on hit, and more. They have no level of their own; they scale with the skill gem they support.
Support Gems carry attribute requirements on top of the skill's own. Each support needs a chunk of its associated attribute (Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence) per gem equipped, so stacking several supports of the same colour demands real attribute investment.
- Up to 5 Support Gems per skill, unlocked progressively with currency
- No socket colours — any support can slot into any skill gem
- Supports scale off the skill gem level, not their own
- Each support adds an attribute requirement of its type
- Recent patches allow duplicate support gems — you can use the same support on multiple skills
04Spirit — The Resource for Persistent Effects
Spirit is a new resource that functions as a reservation pool. While Mana and Life refresh as you play, Spirit is a fixed capacity you allocate permanently to active persistent effects. Each aura, permanent minion, or meta gem you activate claims a slice of your Spirit, and it stays claimed as long as that effect runs.
Spirit is gained primarily from gear — Body Armours and Amulets in particular grant Spirit — and certain campaign boss kills permanently increase your maximum Spirit. Skills that consume Spirit include auras, permanent minions (each reserves a chunk for as long as it is alive), and meta gems.
Raising the level of a minion skill gem gradually reduces its Spirit cost, so investing in gem levels pays off double for summoner builds.
- Spirit is reserved, not spent — it stays allocated while an effect is active
- Auras, permanent minions, and meta gems all draw from Spirit
- Raising minion gem level reduces the Spirit reserved per minion
- Gear (Body Armour, Amulets) is the main way to increase max Spirit
- You can toggle persistent skills off to reclaim their Spirit for another effect
05Meta Gems and Uncut Spirit Gems
Uncut Spirit Gems are cut into Spirit Gems — a category that includes both auras/buffs and a special subset called meta gems. Meta gems reserve Spirit to grant a persistent conditional effect that interacts with your other skills in real time.
A classic example is a Cast on meta gem, which reserves Spirit to watch for a condition (like a freeze) and then automatically triggers a linked skill when it fires. Meta gems sit between active skills and passive buffs — always on, but reactive rather than just granting stats.
Because Uncut Spirit Gems are the rarest of the three gem types, build planning around meta gems matters from early on. Guaranteed campaign sources give a small but reliable supply; in the endgame they drop more freely from Rare enemies and map bosses.
- Cut an Uncut Spirit Gem and select the Spirit Gem or meta gem you want.
- Equip the Spirit Gem in a skill slot like an active skill.
- Toggle it on — it immediately begins reserving Spirit from your pool.
- For meta gems, also socket relevant Support Gems to modify the triggered skill.
- Monitor your remaining free Spirit; running out prevents activating additional persistent effects.
06Practical Tips for Building Around the Gem System
A few habits separate smooth progression from constantly running out of resources or wasting Uncut Gems:
- Do not cut Uncut Gems immediately — hold low-level ones until you know your build direction; high-level ones often serve better as upgrades to a skill you already rely on.
- Check attribute totals before socketing supports — stacking several supports of one colour demands meaningful attribute investment, separate from your skill's base needs.
- Prioritise Spirit sources early — pick up the campaign Spirit rewards before the endgame so you can run your first auras and minions.
- Level your minion gems — every level reduces the Spirit each minion reserves, letting you field more from the same budget.
- Plan your support spread — since duplicate supports are allowed, you can stack a powerful support across skills; factor this into currency planning.
- Experiment freely — Spirit gems can be toggled on and off without cost, so testing aura combinations is risk-free.
The gem system rewards deliberate planning over random discovery. Once you understand that every drop is a blank canvas and that your support budget is tied to attributes rather than gear sockets, character building becomes far more predictable.
FAQ
Can you recut or change an Uncut Gem after cutting it?
No — once you cut an Uncut Gem into a specific skill or support, the choice is permanent. However, you can use a higher-level Uncut Skill Gem to upgrade an existing skill gem to that level instead of cutting it into a new skill. Plan your cuts carefully, especially with rare Uncut Spirit Gems.
Can you use the same Support Gem on more than one skill?
Yes, in current patches. Earlier in early access each unique Support Gem could only be assigned to one skill at a time, but that restriction was lifted, so you can socket identical copies of the same support into as many skills as you like, provided you have the copies and meet the attribute requirements for each.
How many Support Gems can one skill have?
Each Skill Gem supports up to five Support Gems, for a six-link equivalent per ability. New gems start with two or three open sockets; the rest are unlocked using a specific socket-unlocking currency item. This maximum applies independently to every skill you use.
What is the difference between a Spirit Gem and a meta gem?
Both are cut from Uncut Spirit Gems and both reserve Spirit to stay active. A traditional Spirit Gem is an aura or persistent buff that passively enhances your character or minions. A meta gem is a reactive variant that watches for a specific condition and automatically triggers a linked skill when it is met. Meta gems also accept their own Support Gems to modify what they trigger.
