Path of Exile 2 Resistance Calculator — How Far Are You From Capped?
Stop eyeballing your character sheet and doing the subtraction in your head. Type in the four numbers Path of Exile 2 already shows you and this calculator tells you exactly how much raw resistance is left to find — and which element to fix first.
01Where to Find Your Current Numbers
Open the Character screen (default key C) and switch to the Defence tab. Your Fire, Cold, Lightning, and Chaos Resistance are listed there as the single number the game currently applies — campaign penalty, gear, passives, and flasks already baked in. That's the number to type into this tool, not a number you calculate by hand.
02Resistance Gap Calculator
Open your Character screen (C) and check the Defence tab — enter the four numbers you see there. This tool works off that live number, so it stays correct no matter how the campaign penalty formula changes between patches.
03What to Do With the Priority Order
The calculator sorts your uncapped elements from the biggest gap to the smallest. That order matters more than it looks: one element sitting 30% below cap is far more dangerous than three elements each sitting 10% below, because the uncapped one is where a big elemental hit one-shots you. Work down the list top to bottom rather than topping up whichever slot you happen to be re-rolling.
- Check rings, amulet, and body armour first — rare items there roll resistance as a suffix and can carry more than one resistance roll at once.
- Look for dual-resistance suffixes (e.g. "to Fire and Cold Resistances") — one affix slot, two elements of coverage.
- Socket elemental runes into armour, not weapons — the same rune adds elemental damage instead of resistance in a weapon slot.
- Re-check the calculator after every gear swap. Dropping a resistance-heavy ring for a damage upgrade is the single most common way players fall back out of cap without noticing.
For the full breakdown of suffixes, runes, and the Reforging Bench, see the companion Resistance Capping Guide.
04Why This Tool Doesn't Ask Which Act You're On
Earlier resistance calculators for this game try to model the campaign penalty from your act progress — a flat amount lost per act completed. We deliberately didn't build it that way here, for a concrete reason: that formula has already changed once this Early Access (the old three-Act-plus-Cruel structure was replaced by Act 4 and the Interlude chapters), community sources currently disagree on the exact per-stage numbers under the new structure, and the full six-Act 1.0 campaign is still ahead — which will change the math again.
Your character sheet doesn't have that problem. Whatever the current patch's penalty formula actually is, it's already applied to the number displayed in the Defence tab. Typing that live number in here means this calculator stays accurate through patches, Interlude reworks, and the eventual 1.0 relaunch without needing an update.
FAQ
What is the resistance cap in Path of Exile 2?
75% for Fire, Cold, Lightning, and Chaos Resistance by default. A small number of passive nodes and unique items explicitly raise your maximum resistance to 90% instead — if you have one of those, toggle "I have a +Maximum Resistance source active" in the calculator above to check your gap against 90% rather than 75%.
How do I check my current resistances in PoE 2?
Press C to open the Character screen, then open the Defence tab. The Fire, Cold, Lightning, and Chaos Resistance values shown there already include your gear, passive tree, flasks, and any campaign penalty currently in effect — that's the exact number to enter into the calculator above.
Does Chaos Resistance use the same cap as elemental resistances?
Yes, Chaos Resistance shares the same 75% (or 90% with a raised-maximum source) cap as Fire, Cold, and Lightning. The difference is that Chaos Resistance is not reduced by the campaign progress penalty, so whatever you see on your sheet for it is your true value with no hidden deduction.
Why doesn't this calculator ask what act I'm on?
Because the campaign resistance penalty formula has already changed once during Early Access and the exact current numbers are disputed between community sources following the Act 4 and Interlude update. Rather than risk showing you a wrong number from an outdated formula, the calculator works from the resistance value your character sheet already displays — which is correct under whatever penalty is currently live, on any patch.
What's a good resistance target while still in the campaign?
You're not expected to sit at 75% during the campaign — the penalty makes that impractical early on. A reasonable working target is staying above roughly 30% on each element as you progress, then pushing every element to the full cap once you reach maps, since endgame monster damage is balanced around capped resistances.
