Path of Exile 2: How to Craft Gear — Beginner Crafting Guide

Crafting in Path of Exile 2 is not optional — it is how you survive the campaign and power into the endgame. The system is built around currency orbs that modify item rarity and modifiers, a Reforging Bench for combining and upgrading items, and socketed runes that add guaranteed bonuses. Understanding even the basics saves dozens of wasted orbs and turns mediocre drops into solid upgrades.

01Item Rarity: Normal, Magic, and Rare

Every piece of gear belongs to one of three crafting-relevant rarities, which determine how many modifiers (affixes) an item can hold and which orbs can be applied:

• Normal (white) — no affixes, the raw base item. These are crafting starting points, not vendor fodder.
• Magic (blue) — up to 2 affixes (one prefix and one suffix). Created from a Normal item with orbs.
• Rare (yellow) — up to 6 affixes (up to 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes). The target rarity for almost all endgame gear.

Unlike Path of Exile 1, there is no Orb of Scouring that reverts a Magic or Rare item back to Normal. Once you upgrade a white item you cannot strip it back — so picking the right base before you craft matters more here than in PoE1.

02The Core Orbs and What Each One Does

Crafting is driven by currency orbs. Learning what each does — and the order to use them — prevents expensive mistakes:

• Orb of Transmutation — upgrades a Normal item to Magic with 1 random affix. The cheapest first step.
• Orb of Augmentation — adds a second affix to a Magic item that only has 1.
• Orb of Alteration — rerolls all affixes on a Magic item. Use when both affixes are useless.
• Regal Orb — upgrades a Magic item to Rare by adding 1 new affix while preserving the existing 2. The key path: Transmute → Augment → Regal.
• Orb of Alchemy — upgrades a Normal item directly to Rare with several random affixes in one step. Fast but uncontrolled.
• Exalted Orb — adds one random affix to a Rare item with open affix slots.
• Chaos Orb — removes one random modifier from a Rare and adds a new one. In PoE2 this is surgical (one mod swapped), unlike PoE1 where it rerolled everything.
• Divine Orb — rerolls the numeric values of existing affixes without changing which affixes are present.
• Vaal Orb — corrupts an item for a chance at a powerful implicit, but locks it from any further crafting. Always the last thing you do.

Key difference from PoE1: the Chaos Orb swaps a single modifier rather than rerolling the whole item — more valuable for targeted fixes, but still unpredictable. Do not spam Chaos Orbs hoping for a perfect item.

03The Crafting Order: A Practical Step-by-Step

The most reliable sequence for building a solid Rare item does cheap, reversible steps first to protect your valuable orbs:

1. Find a good base item — the right type with high implicit values, since you cannot revert to Normal.
2. Apply an Orb of Transmutation to make it Magic.
3. Apply an Orb of Augmentation if the first affix is worth keeping.
4. If both affixes are bad, Orb of Alteration rerolls them; repeat until you have a desirable affix.
5. Apply a Regal Orb to upgrade to Rare, locking in the two Magic affixes and adding a third.
6. Use Exalted Orbs to fill remaining open slots on the Rare.
7. If one affix is wrong, a Chaos Orb can swap it — but the replacement is random.
8. Once affixes are right, use a Divine Orb to maximise their rolls.
9. Optionally finish with a Vaal Orb, accepting you lose crafting access permanently.

During the campaign, skip steps 6 through 9 entirely. Transmute, Augment, and Regal are your workhorses — save Exalted, Chaos, Divine, and Vaal orbs for endgame gear or trading.

04The Reforging Bench and Salvage Bench

Two crafting stations expand what you can do beyond raw orb use.

The Salvage Bench breaks down socketed gear into Artificer's Shards. Collect 10 shards to form one Artificer's Orb, which adds a socket to any gear piece — essential for inserting runes and soul cores onto items that lack sockets.

The Reforging Bench combines items to create something better from unwanted gear. It is most useful for upgrading runes: combining three of the same rune tier produces one of the next tier up. The same tiering applies to Soul Cores, so never vendor low-tier crafting materials in bulk — combine them up instead.

05Runes and Soul Cores: Guaranteed Bonuses in Sockets

Sockets on gear no longer hold active skill gems — those are self-contained. Instead, gear sockets hold Runes and Soul Cores that provide guaranteed stat bonuses, adding a deterministic layer on top of the random orb system.

• Runes provide straightforward bonuses like elemental resistance, life, or attributes. They drop from any enemy in Lesser, regular, and Greater tiers.
• Soul Cores grant more powerful or unique bonuses and are rarer drops.
• To add a socket to gear that does not have one, use an Artificer's Orb from the Salvage Bench.
• Runes and Soul Cores can be freely swapped in and out of sockets — they are not destroyed on removal — so experiment freely.

During the campaign, filling gear sockets with resistance runes is one of the fastest and cheapest ways to hit the 75% resistance caps. Prioritise this before spending Regal or Exalted Orbs on resistance rolls.

06Essences and Omens: Guaranteed Modifiers

Orbs are random, but PoE2 also has a bench-crafting layer that is not: Essences apply one guaranteed, predetermined modifier to an item — an Essence of the Body always adds the same type of life roll, for example — instead of gambling on an orb's random affix pool. An item can only hold one crafted modifier at a time, so a crafted Essence mod occupies that single slot; Desecrated modifiers (from Ritual/other league content) are tracked separately and are capped at one of their own.

Omens are consumable modifiers that change the outcome of your next currency use — for example, forcing an Exalted Orb to add a modifier from a specific pool, or altering how a Chaos Orb re-rolls a Waystone. They are single-use and only apply to the very next relevant currency application, so plan the order you use them in.

For a beginner, the practical takeaway is simple: use an Essence when you need one specific, reliable stat (like a resistance or life roll) on a low-value base, and save Omens for expensive, high-value crafts where guaranteeing the outcome of one Exalted or Chaos Orb use is worth the extra cost.

07Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

New players consistently make the same costly errors. Avoid these and progression gets much smoother:

• Spending Chaos and Exalted Orbs during the campaign. Save them for endgame gear or trading — campaign items get replaced too quickly.
• Augmenting a Magic item past the clean Regal path. If it already has 2 good affixes, Regal it rather than risking a third Augment slot.
• Ignoring the base item type. A high-quality base is worth crafting on; a low-tier base caps out regardless of affixes.
• Vendoring socketed white items. Send them to the Salvage Bench for Artificer's Shards first.
• Vaal Orb-ing early. Corruption removes all future crafting access — only Vaal gear you are fully satisfied with.
• Ignoring resistance runes. Filling sockets with resistance runes is faster and cheaper than rolling resistance affixes on every gear slot.
