Marvel Rivals Team-Ups Explained Season 9 — How the New System Works
Team-Up abilities are one of Marvel Rivals' most distinctive mechanics — and Season 9: The Mystery of Thebes (July 10, 2026) completely rebuilt them in the largest overhaul since launch. The old anchor/secondary model is gone. Every hero now has two independent Team-Up Ability loadout options, can use their Team-Up whether or not their partner is on the team, and no longer grants flat stat bonuses just for being an anchor. This guide explains how the Season 9 system works and what it means for drafting.
01What Is a Team-Up Ability? (Season 9 System)
A Team-Up is a bonus ability that each hero can equip before a match from their own personal pool of exactly two options. Season 9: The Mystery of Thebes (July 2026) completely rebuilt the system, removing the old anchor/secondary structure that governed previous seasons.
The core Season 9 rules:
- Two loadout slots per hero. Every hero in the 53-hero roster has exactly two Team-Up Abilities to choose from. You pick one in the spawn room before the match starts. You can swap between the two options mid-match — but only while in the spawn room between respawns, not during live play.
- Base Effect vs. Enhanced Effect. You can activate your selected Team-Up ability even if the required partner hero is not on your team. Without the partner, the ability fires at its Base Effect — a functional but reduced version. When the required partner is on your team, the ability upgrades to its Enhanced Effect, unlocking stronger values or additional mechanics.
- No more Anchor Heroes. The old concept of an Anchor Hero — a required hero whose presence activated the combo and who received flat stat bonuses in exchange — has been removed entirely. The flat +100–150 HP and +5–15% healing/damage boosts that anchors previously received are gone from the system.
- 106 Team-Up abilities total. Every hero has two, which means there are now 106 Team-Up abilities across the Season 9.5 roster (28 for Vanguards, 54 for Duelists, 24 for Strategists) following The Hood's arrival as a new Vanguard. The in-game Team-Up panel on the hero select screen is the authoritative source for current ability descriptions and numbers.
NetEase overhauls Team-Ups significantly with major content updates. Always check the in-game Team-Up panel after a new patch rather than relying on third-party lists — including this one.
02Why Team-Ups Still Matter in Draft
Even though Team-Ups can now be used without a partner, the Enhanced Effect is meaningfully stronger than the Base Effect — so drafting around your partner hero still pays off. A team where everyone is running Enhanced Effects has more total ability power than a team relying on Base Effects.
In competitive play at higher skill levels, Team-Up optimization remains a serious part of team composition. In casual and lower-ranked play, even getting your Enhanced Effect active on two or three heroes provides a measurable edge.
The practical pre-match habit has shifted slightly with Season 9: instead of looking for Anchor heroes your teammates have already picked, you now look at what partner heroes your teammates chose and pick the Team-Up loadout that synergises with them for the Enhanced Effect. If no partner is present, your Base Effect is still useful — you're not locked out of your ability.
03Season 9 Team-Up System: What Changed
Season 9 replaced all 26 Season 8.5 Team-Ups with an entirely new set of 104 abilities under the new loadout framework, and the Season 9.5 mid-season update added two more when The Hood joined as a new Vanguard, bringing the total to 106. The anchor/secondary pairing names (Symbiote Shenanigans, Fastball Special, Stars Aligned, etc.) are gone or rebuilt with different mechanics. Every hero received two new Team-Up abilities designed for the Base Effect/Enhanced Effect model.
Because the Season 9.5 ability effects span 106 entries and are subject to ongoing balance adjustments, the most reliable source for current ability descriptions is the in-game Team-Up panel on the hero select screen. Hovering over any hero's Team-Up slot shows their two options with full ability text, including what changes between Base and Enhanced Effect.
A few structural notes about Season 9 Team-Ups worth knowing for drafting:
- Heroes with overlapping partner pools matter more now. If one hero's Enhanced Effect requires Hulk, and a second hero's Enhanced Effect also requires Hulk, having Hulk on your team activates two Enhanced Effects simultaneously. Tracking which heroes share common partners is how you stack Team-Up value in Season 9.
- Regenerative Shields replaced anchor flat-HP bonuses. The old system gave anchor heroes 50–150 bonus HP just for being the anchor. In Season 9, several heroes who previously received that bonus instead have Regenerative Shields added to their base kit or via a Team-Up effect — these shields begin regenerating after 5 seconds without taking damage and fully recover over the next 5 seconds, rewarding mobile heroes who can briefly disengage.
- The meta impact of ultimates charges slower. Alongside the Team-Up overhaul, Season 9 also reduced global ultimate-energy generation: Vanguards and Duelists generate 55% energy from damage (down from 70%), and Strategists generate 60% from healing (down from 75%) and 55% from damage (down from 75%). Fights rely more on ability rotations and Team-Up usage now that ultimates come up less frequently.

04How to Prioritise Team-Ups in Season 9
The Season 9 meta for evaluating Team-Ups has shifted from the old anchor-centric logic. General principles that apply now:
- Enhanced Effect is the target. Your Team-Up ability works at Base Effect without a partner, but the Enhanced Effect is meaningfully stronger. When choosing between two heroes of comparable power level, pick the one whose Enhanced Effect partner is already in your team's draft.
- Stacked partners multiply value. A hero who is the required partner for two other heroes' Enhanced Effects provides double value by being in the lineup. Look for heroes that appear as partners on multiple teammates' loadouts.
- Active abilities over passive effects, other things equal. A Team-Up that gives you a new button to press changes your threat profile in fights. Passive stat buffs are consistently relevant but are less impactful in high-pressure moments.
- Swap loadouts to match the draft. If you queued with a specific Team-Up in mind but your intended partner didn't get selected, switch to your second loadout in the spawn room to find a better Enhanced Effect match with what your actual team picked. This flexibility didn't exist in previous seasons.
Because Season 9.5's specific Team-Up abilities are numerous (106 total) and subject to balance changes, we recommend checking the in-game Team-Up panel on the hero select screen and current community resources (Mobalytics, MetaBot.GG) for the highest-impact combinations in the current patch.
05Team-Up Timing and Communication
A few practical considerations for getting Team-Up value in actual matches under the Season 9 system:
- Your Team-Up works even without your partner. You are never locked out of your Team-Up ability — Base Effect is available regardless of who your teammates pick. Only the enhanced version requires the partner to be alive and on your team, so save particularly important Team-Up uses for moments when you know your partner is in the fight.
- Swap loadouts in the spawn room before leaving. You can switch between your two Team-Up Ability loadouts mid-match, but only while inside the spawn room. Once you walk out, you are locked to the current loadout until you respawn. Pick the loadout that matches your current draft before leaving spawn.
- Some Team-Ups are passive, some are active. Passive Team-Ups (persistent auras, stat effects) are always on when activated. Active Team-Ups give you a new button on a cooldown — treat them like a third ability in your rotation, not an occasional option.
- Communicate your loadout choice, not just your hero. With two options per hero, teammates may not know which Team-Up effect you've selected. A quick 'I'm on [ability name] loadout — pair with me for the enhanced version' in text chat before lock-in covers the key coordination.
FAQ
How many Team-Ups are in Marvel Rivals?
As of Season 9.5 (August 2026), there are 106 Team-Up abilities — every hero in the 53-hero roster has exactly two to choose from. The total increases when new heroes join the roster; the count rose from 104 to 106 when The Hood joined as a new Vanguard. NetEase updates Team-Up abilities with major content patches.
Do Team-Ups require your partner to be on the team?
Not in Season 9. You can use your Team-Up ability even if the required partner hero is not on your team — this activates the Base Effect. When the partner IS on your team, the ability upgrades to the Enhanced Effect with stronger values or additional mechanics. This replaced the old anchor system where the partner was a hard requirement.
What happened to the Anchor Hero system?
It was removed in Season 9: The Mystery of Thebes (July 2026). The old anchor/secondary model — where one hero had to be present to activate another hero's ability, and the anchor received flat stat bonuses like +100 HP in exchange — is completely gone. Every hero now has their own two Team-Up loadout options that work independently.
Can both teams use the same Team-Ups?
Yes. There is no restriction preventing both teams from selecting the same Team-Up loadouts. If both teams pick the same hero combination for an Enhanced Effect, both teams get it — the system does not create exclusive access per match.
Are some Team-Ups better than others?
Yes, significantly so. Team-Ups that grant a powerful new active ability change a hero's threat profile in ways that passive effects do not. The relative strength of specific combinations shifts with balance patches — check community resources (Mobalytics, MetaBot.GG) after each season update for the current high-impact picks.
Where can I see my Team-Up options in Marvel Rivals?
On the hero select screen, each hero has a Team-Up panel showing their two loadout options and which produces the Enhanced Effect based on the current draft. You can also explore Team-Up abilities in the game's Hero Gallery. The in-game panel is the most accurate source since it reflects the current patch — third-party lists may lag behind balance changes.
