KCD2 Combat Tips Master Strikes, Parries & Combos

Updated July 20269 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 combat is often described as frustrating by new players — and then described as deeply satisfying by veterans. The gap between those two experiences is mostly knowledge. KCD2's melee system is based on real principles of historical European martial arts: control the distance, read your opponent's guard, time your parries precisely, and exploit their stamina. Once those principles click, combat becomes one of the most rewarding in any RPG. This guide covers the core mechanics, the essential training, and the concrete tips that turn losing fights into controlled victories.

01The Fundamentals: How KCD2 Combat Works

KCD2 uses a directional melee system with five possible attack directions: upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right, and a straight thrust. You choose the direction by moving your mouse or analog stick in that direction before attacking. The enemy responds by guarding from the direction they anticipate — attacking into their guard wastes your stamina and does minimal damage.

The goal is not to overpower the enemy but to find or create openings. This means feinting to change attack direction, targeting unguarded sides, timing attacks after the opponent's swings miss, or using parries and master strikes to create counter-attack windows.

02How to Parry Correctly

Parrying in KCD2 is timing-based, not button-mashing. You must press the block button at the moment the enemy's attack lands — specifically when the green shield icon appears on screen. A successful parry staggers the attacker briefly, opening a counter-attack window. An early or late block drains your stamina and does not stagger the opponent.

Perfect parrying (timing within the tightest window) also briefly staggers the attacker more severely than a standard parry, creating a larger counter-attack window. This timing becomes more reliable as Sword skill increases.

03Master Strikes: The Most Powerful Combat Technique

A master strike is the single most powerful technique in KCD2's combat system. It is an unblockable counter-attack that activates when you attack from the opposite direction to the enemy's current swing at the right moment. Executing it correctly stops the opponent's attack entirely and lands your counter in one fluid motion — dealing full damage with no defence possible.

Master strikes are not default abilities — they must be trained. The primary trainer for master strikes in KCD2 is Master Tomcat, who resides at the Nomads' camp located northwest of Semine. You need your combat skills at a reasonable level before he will teach you. Some combat instructors elsewhere in the world also provide this teaching.

Train master strikes as soon as you are eligible. The technique transforms fighting from a stamina war into a controlled sequence of parries and punishing counters.

04Combos and Stamina Management

Combos in KCD2 are sequences of attacks in specific directions that deal bonus damage and are harder for enemies to guard against because the direction changes mid-sequence. Training with combat instructors teaches you named combos; as your Sword skill increases, longer and more complex combinations unlock.

05Fighting Multiple Opponents

Outnumbered combat in KCD2 is genuinely dangerous and should be avoided when possible until your combat skills are well developed. Two opponents can attack simultaneously from different directions, and Henry's block can only cover one side at a time.

06Equipment Condition and Its Combat Impact

Damaged equipment is one of the most overlooked combat factors by new players. KCD2 tracks the durability and sharpness of every weapon and armor piece separately, and both deteriorate meaningfully during combat.

07Where to Train Combat Skills

KCD2 has dedicated combat trainers who can teach techniques and jumpstart skill growth through paid training sessions. Training is faster than grinding the skill purely through combat and unlocks techniques that cannot be discovered through self-taught fighting.

FAQ

How do you perform a master strike in KCD2?

A master strike is executed by attacking from the opposite direction to the enemy's incoming swing at the correct moment — when the enemy's attack is mid-animation. For example, if the opponent swings from upper right, you attack from upper left. The timing and direction must both be correct. You must first train master strikes from a teacher such as Master Tomcat at the Nomads' camp northwest of Semine. Without training, you cannot execute the technique regardless of your skill level.

Why does Henry always lose fights in KCD2?

Most early-game combat losses come from one of four causes: damaged weapons doing insufficient damage, Henry's combat skills being too low (insufficient stamina per attack, poor parry timing), fighting multiple opponents simultaneously without using terrain to your advantage, or fighting like a traditional action game rather than watching the enemy's guard and waiting for openings. Check weapon condition first — a sword at low durability barely hurts. Then consider whether you need a trainer session to improve base technique.

How do you dodge in KCD2?

Dodge is performed by pressing the dodge button while moving in a direction (typically a direction key plus the dodge input). Dodging moves Henry laterally or backwards to avoid an incoming attack without blocking it. Dodging costs less stamina than a sustained block but requires accurate timing and positioning. The Nimble Stance perk reduces dodge stamina cost by 40%, making it a particularly efficient defensive technique for Agility-based builds.

What is the best way to fight armored enemies in KCD2?

Against heavily plated opponents, switch to a mace, war hammer, or axe if you have one — blunt and cleaving damage bypasses plate armor far more effectively than sword slashing attacks. If you only have a sword, aim for unarmored gaps (joints, visors on closed helmets) using the specific attack direction that targets those areas. Grappling and clinch moves also work differently against armored enemies and can be effective when executed from advantageous angles.

How do feints work in KCD2?

A feint is initiated by beginning an attack in one direction and then changing to a different direction before the strike lands. This briefly fools the opponent's guard into the wrong position, creating an opening for the actual attack. Feints require practice to time correctly — moving too late in the animation means the original attack already commits. As your Sword skill increases, feints become faster and harder for enemies to read. Advanced combat styles in the later game chain feints into combos for consistent openings.

Does KCD2 have a difficulty setting?

Yes. KCD2 has multiple difficulty settings that affect combat lethality, saving mechanics, and overall challenge level. On the default difficulty, the game autosaves at beds and checkpoints and combat is somewhat more forgiving. Harder settings increase damage, limit saving (requiring Saviour Schnapps items), and make enemies more aggressive. Patch 1.2 added a Hardcore mode that is the most restrictive in terms of both saves and combat difficulty. New players are advised to start on the default difficulty and switch up only once the core systems are understood.
