Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta Guide — How to Get Access and What to Expect

The Gears of War: E-Day open beta is a multiplayer-only test running in two phases before the October 6, 2026 launch. Phase 1 early access starts August 6 — and whether you get in depends entirely on how you've engaged with the game so far. Here's the complete breakdown.

01Beta Schedule: Phase 1 and Phase 2

The beta is structured in two separate phases, with different eligibility rules for each:

• Phase 1 — Early Access: August 6–10, 2026. Open to digital pre-orders of any edition, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, and PC Game Pass subscribers. This is the gated phase — if you don't meet one of those criteria, you'll need to wait.
• Phase 2 — Open Beta: Dates TBA. This second weekend opens the beta to everyone, no pre-order or Game Pass subscription required. Microsoft has said dates will be announced separately closer to the event.
• Both phases are multiplayer only — neither includes the campaign. The beta is listed on the Xbox Store as the 'Multiplayer Beta' specifically.

If you're flexible, waiting for Phase 2 costs nothing and gets you the same beta content. If you want the earliest possible hands-on time, Phase 1 requires one of the access paths below.

02How to Get In: Digital Pre-Order

The simplest path to Phase 1 early access is a digital pre-order of any edition — Standard, Premium, or Collector's — from the Xbox Store or Steam:

• No beta code needed. Digital pre-orders are linked to your account automatically. Once Phase 1 opens on August 6, the beta downloads directly to your library.
• All editions qualify equally. You don't need the $99.99 Premium Edition for beta access — the $69.99 Standard Edition pre-order is enough.
• The pre-order also gets you the Exfil Dom Legendary Character Skin and Exfil Legendary Weapon Skin Set at launch — a bonus that's not available if you wait and buy at full price.

03How to Get In: Xbox Game Pass

Active subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass get Phase 1 early access without needing to pre-order:

• Xbox Game Pass Ultimate — covers Xbox Series X|S and PC, includes early access to Phase 1.
• PC Game Pass — PC-only subscription, also qualifies for Phase 1 early access.
• No purchase or beta code required. If you're subscribed on August 6, the beta will appear in your Game Pass library the same way any other Game Pass title does.

This makes Game Pass the most cost-effective route in if you don't already own an E-Day pre-order and weren't planning to buy immediately. Note that the October 6 game launch itself is day-one on Game Pass — so subscribers can access the full game without a separate purchase when it releases.

04Physical Copy: How Beta Codes Work

Physical retail buyers receive a beta access code at point of sale when they pre-order the game in store:

• The code comes from the retailer at the time of pre-order — not from the box itself, and not from The Coalition directly.
• Redeem the code on your Xbox or Microsoft account before Phase 1 starts to link access to your account.
• Check with your retailer if a code wasn't included or has expired — distribution varies by region and retailer.

Physical buyers planning to pick up a Collector's Edition ($299.99) should confirm with the retailer whether a beta code is distributed at the time of pre-order or reserved for in-store pickup — availability may vary.

05What the Beta Actually Includes

The beta is a standalone multiplayer test, explicitly not a campaign preview:

• Multiplayer only. No story missions, no campaign co-op. The beta is purpose-built to test multiplayer infrastructure and gather feedback before the October launch.
• Exact modes TBA. E-Day's multiplayer includes 4v4 Versus and the new 12-player Horde Siege mode (see our Co-op & Multiplayer Guide), but the specific modes available in the beta haven't been confirmed ahead of Phase 1. The Coalition is expected to detail the beta's contents closer to August 6.
• Xbox Series X|S and PC only. No Xbox One or mobile support — same platform restrictions as the full game.
• Progress likely does not carry over to the full game — standard practice for Gears betas. Cosmetics and XP earned during the test are typically reset at retail launch.

Treat the beta as a systems test and early look at the multiplayer feel, not a preview of the campaign or story content.

06Beta vs Game Launch Early Access: Don't Confuse the Two

There are two separate 'early access' events on E-Day's calendar and they're easy to mix up:

• Open Beta Phase 1 — August 6, 2026: multiplayer test, free for pre-orders and Game Pass subscribers.
• Full Game Early Access — October 1, 2026: the complete game, five days ahead of the October 6 global release, exclusive to Premium Edition and Collector's Edition buyers only. Game Pass subscribers and Standard Edition pre-orders do not get this early access.
• Winning the beta (Phase 1) does not give you early access to the full game in October. Those are separate entitlements with separate eligibility requirements.
