Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta Guide — How to Get Access and What to Expect

The Gears of War: E-Day open beta ran in two multiplayer-only weekends ahead of the October 6, 2026 launch: Phase 1 (Early Access) from August 6–10, and Phase 2 (open to everyone) from August 13–17. Here's exactly how access worked for each phase and what the beta actually included.

01Beta Schedule: Phase 1 and Phase 2

The beta ran in two separate phases, with different eligibility rules for each:

• Phase 1 — Early Access: August 6 (12pm PT) to August 10 (10am PT), 2026. Open to pre-orders of any edition on Xbox Series X|S or Steam, plus Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers. This was the gated phase.
• Phase 2 — Open Beta: August 13 (12pm PT) to August 17 (10am PT), 2026. This second weekend opened the beta to everyone on Xbox Series X|S and PC, regardless of pre-order status.
• Both phases were multiplayer only — neither included the campaign. The beta is listed on the Xbox Store as the 'Multiplayer Beta' specifically, and was also playable via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

If you missed Phase 1, Phase 2 gave everyone the same beta content for free a week later.

02How to Get In: Digital Pre-Order

The simplest path to Phase 1 early access is a digital pre-order of any edition — Standard, Premium, or Collector's — from the Xbox Store or Steam:

• No beta code needed. Digital pre-orders are linked to your account automatically. Once Phase 1 opens on August 6, the beta downloads directly to your library.
• All editions qualify equally. You don't need the $99.99 Premium Edition for beta access — the $69.99 Standard Edition pre-order is enough.
• The pre-order also gets you the Exfil Dom Legendary Character Skin and Exfil Legendary Weapon Skin Set at launch — a bonus that's not available if you wait and buy at full price.

03How to Get In: Xbox Game Pass

Active subscribers to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass get Phase 1 early access without needing to pre-order:

• Xbox Game Pass Ultimate — covers Xbox Series X|S and PC, includes early access to Phase 1.
• PC Game Pass — PC-only subscription, also qualifies for Phase 1 early access.
• No purchase or beta code required. If you're subscribed on August 6, the beta will appear in your Game Pass library the same way any other Game Pass title does.

This made Game Pass the most cost-effective route in for players who didn't already own an E-Day pre-order. The October 6 game launch itself was day-one on Game Pass, so subscribers got the full game without a separate purchase.

04Physical Copy: How Beta Codes Work

Physical retail buyers receive a beta access code at point of sale when they pre-order the game in store:

• The code comes from the retailer at the time of pre-order — not from the box itself, and not from The Coalition directly.
• Redeem the code on your Xbox or Microsoft account before Phase 1 starts to link access to your account.
• Check with your retailer if a code wasn't included or has expired — distribution varies by region and retailer.

Physical buyers planning to pick up a Collector's Edition ($299.99) should confirm with the retailer whether a beta code is distributed at the time of pre-order or reserved for in-store pickup — availability may vary.

05What the Beta Actually Includes

The beta is a standalone multiplayer test, explicitly not a campaign preview:

• Multiplayer only. No story missions, no campaign co-op. The beta was purpose-built to test multiplayer infrastructure and gather feedback before the October launch.
• Confirmed modes: Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus — E-Day's two headline multiplayer modes (see our Co-op & Multiplayer Guide) were both playable across both beta weekends, though the beta only featured a subset of the full launch content (fewer maps and options than October's release).
• Xbox Series X|S, PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming. No Xbox One or mobile support — same platform restrictions as the full game.
• Some progress carried over, some didn't. Beta Player Titles, Beta Medals, and any Beta Challenge rewards unlocked during the beta carried over for use at launch. Class progression, Player Level, and other Medal progress did not carry over and were reset for launch.

In practice, the beta worked as a systems test and early look at the multiplayer feel rather than a preview of the campaign or story content — and it fed directly into launch-day tuning: The Coalition's launch-eve patch notes say the Prototype Lancer's damage was set at a value between what it was in the two beta weekends, based on feedback from both.

06Beta vs Game Launch Early Access: Don't Confuse the Two

There are two separate 'early access' events on E-Day's calendar and they're easy to mix up:

• Open Beta Phase 1 — August 6, 2026: multiplayer test, free for pre-orders and Game Pass subscribers.
• Full Game Early Access — October 1, 2026: the complete game, five days ahead of the October 6 global release, exclusive to Premium Edition and Collector's Edition buyers only. Game Pass subscribers and Standard Edition pre-orders do not get this early access.
• Winning the beta (Phase 1) does not give you early access to the full game in October. Those are separate entitlements with separate eligibility requirements.
