Enshrouded Farming & Food Guide — Farmer, Seeds and Food Buffs in 1.0

Updated October 20267 min readBy

Short answer: in Enshrouded 1.0 you unlock farming by rescuing the Farmer, Emily Fray, in the quest Growing Stronger Together. You get no starter seeds — you harvest a wild crop once and that unlocks its seedling recipe at the Seedbed. Food gives timed buffs: three slots, one food per food type, and the Dessert Stomach skill adds a fourth. This guide separates what two or more sources agree on from what is still unclear.

01Unlock the Farmer first

Farming is gated behind a survivor. According to the xgamingserver farming guide, the quest Growing Stronger Together sends you to an Ancient Vault in the Springlands to free the Farmer, Emily Fray. Once she is freed you can summon her at a base with the Summoning Staff, and she provides the Seedbed, Cooking Station, Oven and Beehive crafting stations.

Vault location: another guide describes it differently, so use the quest marker rather than a written route. The Enshrouded wiki lists the Farmer, Cooking Station, Kitchen and Oven among the workstations food recipes name, which matches the idea that most cooking recipes sit behind her.

02Seeds: harvest wild first

You do not buy or loot a starter seed bundle. The guides we checked agree that you unlock a seedling recipe by harvesting that crop growing in the world (for example wild tomatoes, pumpkins or wheat), then craft the seedlings at the Seedbed. If a seedling is missing from your list, you probably have not harvested that plant by hand yet.

The 1.0 changelog from Keen Games adds a few relevant details: Thyme now has a seedling, Cattails and Reed can be planted in shallow water, planted shrubs now drop the correct seedlings, and a tutorial for the watering can explains how to keep an eye on the needs of different plants.

03Soil, water and growth: check in game

Third-party sources disagree on exact Farm Soil and Seedbed costs (one lists Wood Logs, Metal Scraps and Farm Soil; others give different amounts), and growth times are only given as rough ranges. We therefore do not list numbers here. Open the Seedbed recipe and the watering can prompt in your own save — the costs shown in the crafting menu are authoritative.

What is consistent: crops need water, and the watering can is the tool the game itself tutorializes for it. Build several planting beds near a water source rather than one far away.

04Food buffs: slots and rules

Both the Enshrouded wiki and the xgamingserver guide agree on the core rules:

The wiki also states a slot can be refreshed or overwritten once about 20% or less of the duration remains. Buff durations vary per recipe and are not published in a single table, so read the tooltip.

05What each food type does

The xgamingserver guide additionally lists Fish (max oxygen) and Night Plants (extra Shroud time); the wiki page we read lists only the eight above, so treat those two as less certain.

Because you get one slot per type, pick the types that match your build: a melee build usually wants Grains plus Meats, a ranged build Vegetables, a mage Mushrooms and Herbs.

06Cooking in 1.0: what changed

Keen Games reworked the yield and production time of numerous factory recipes and cooking stations in 1.0, with items players need in bulk becoming more generous and faster. The Iron Fireplace no longer has a cooking option. All foods can now be placed on coasters or food plates, apart from a few such as skewers and fish. Farm animals also produce their goods significantly faster.

A new personal recipe, the Puke Potion, removes any ongoing food buffs — useful if a weak buff is blocking a better dish of the same type.

07Tips

  1. Do Growing Stronger Together early; every cooking station depends on the Farmer.
  2. Harvest one of every wild crop you pass so its seedling is unlocked.
  3. Cook for your build's food types and keep all three slots filled before bosses.
  4. Use the Puke Potion to clear a weak buff instead of waiting it out.
  5. Cross-check recipe costs in your own crafting menu — the patch notes say amounts were rebalanced.

FAQ

How do I unlock farming in Enshrouded?

Complete the quest Growing Stronger Together to free the Farmer, Emily Fray, from an Ancient Vault. After that you can summon her at a base with the Summoning Staff and craft the Seedbed.

Where do I get seeds in Enshrouded?

You do not receive seeds directly. Harvest a wild crop such as tomatoes, pumpkins or wheat and its seedling recipe unlocks at the Seedbed.

How many food buffs can I have active in Enshrouded?

Three at once, with a fourth slot from the Dessert Stomach skill. Only one food of each food type can be active at a time.

How do I remove a food buff?

Craft the Puke Potion, added in 1.0, which removes any ongoing food buffs. The wiki also notes a slot can be overwritten when about 20% or less of its duration remains.

Which food is best for melee builds?

Grains give melee damage and Meats give bonus health, so a Grain dish plus a Meat dish is the usual pairing. Compare the exact values in your cooking menu.

Can I plant Cattails and Reed?

Yes. The 1.0 changelog says Cattails and Reed can now be planted in shallow water.
