Enshrouded Flame Altar Upgrades Flame Levels 1–11: Requirements & What They Unlock
To upgrade your Flame Altar in Enshrouded, open the altar, choose Strengthen the Flame, and hand over Spark, a themed set of regional materials, survivors in beds and — from the 2→3 step on — one boss trophy per step. The final level is Flame Level 11, unlocked after the Vorgoth fight. Enshrouded 1.0 shipped on 15 October 2026 and guides written for Early Access still circulate with older level caps and bigger costs, so this page sticks to what Keen Games' changelog and the Enshrouded community wiki's requirement table confirm, and flags anywhere the two don't line up. For the first hours see our beginner guide; for everything else that changed see 1.0 changes explained.
01How Flame Altar Upgrades Work
The Flame Altar marks your base, and the Flame Level is a global progression track tied to it. You raise it from the altar's Strengthen the Flame screen. Per the community wiki the level is global and never goes down, even if every altar is extinguished.
Each step needs Spark (collected from Flame Shrines and Sanctums), a set of regional materials, a rising number of survivors and, from the second step on, a boss trophy. Survivors with an assigned, sheltered bed are what the community widely reports as counting toward the requirement — the game doesn't spell this out on the Strengthen the Flame screen itself, so treat it as a practical rule of thumb rather than a confirmed mechanic.
1.0 also changed the surrounding systems. Keen Games states that the first level-up is now designed to happen when you place your first Flame Altar, that every Flame upgrade automatically unlocks the armor sets of the following crafting tier, and that Fell Vultures drop more Enshrouded Vulture Talons to ease the Level 5→6 step.
02Flame Level 1–5 Requirements
These steps match the detailed requirement table on the Enshrouded Flame Altar wiki page, so the numbers are safe to farm against. Survivors are the minimum number housed in beds.
- Level 1→2: no survivors. 1 Spark, 5 Resin, 5 Penny Bun, 5 Bones, 5 Shroud Liquid, 5 Animal Fur.
- Level 2→3: 2 survivors. 5 Spark, 10 Wax, 10 Salt, 10 Shroud Wood, 10 Flintstone, 25 Mycelium, 1 Scavenger Matron Helmet.
- Level 3→4: 4 survivors. 10 Spark, 15 Goo, 15 Corrupted Boar Tusk, 15 Indigo Plant, 15 Amber, 15 Copper Ore, 1 Fell Wispwyvern Head.
- Level 4→5: 6 survivors. 20 Spark, 20 Mint Mushroom Meat, 20 Fossilized Bone, 20 Ammonia Gland, 20 Tin Ore, 20 Rooibos, 1 Fell Monstrosity Head.
Note the trophy timing: some guide summaries say trophies start at Level 3, but the detailed wiki table puts the first trophy (the Scavenger Matron Helmet) on the 2→3 step. Treat the table as correct.
03Flame Level 6–9: Boss Heads and Material Types
Keen Games' 1.0 changelog says it reduced the resource amounts for Flame Level recipes at levels 6, 7, 8 and 9 and replaced Electric Organs and Poison Stings with more common resources. Here are the current confirmed numbers, per the Enshrouded Flame Altar wiki page:
- Level 5→6: 8 survivors. 40 Spark, 40 Enshrouded Vulture Talon, 40 Saffron, 40 Iron Ore, 40 Lapislazuli, 40 Brittle Shroud Flakes, 1 Fell Sicklescythe Head.
- Level 6→7: 10 survivors. 40 Spark, 40 Wool, 40 Gentian, 40 Ice, 40 Granite, 40 Flammable Goo, 1 Fell Cyclops Head.
- Level 7→8: 12 survivors. 50 Spark, 50 Obsidian, 50 Silver Bars, 50 Mauveine, 50 Wolfsbane, 50 Amethyst, 1 Fell Dragon Youngling Head.
- Level 8→9: 14 survivors. 60 Spark, 60 Gold Ore, 60 Green Vitriol Dust, 60 Aquamarine, 30 Passionflower, 30 Pearl, 1 Hydrak'Dal Head (cross-checked against an independent Level 9 walkthrough).
04Flame Level 10 and 11: The Endgame Steps
The wiki table and the official changelog's context agree on these two steps:
- Level 9→10: 16 survivors. 60 Spark, 1 Broken Guard Of The North Crown, 15 Gleam Root Dust, 10 Piscine Ivory Dust, 30 Drak Blood, 10 Shroud Sludge, 30 Daylily.
- Level 10→11: 18 survivors. 20 Spark, 10 Celestium Bars, 15 Moonstone, 20 Diamond Dust, 15 Ember Carapace, 1 Vorgoth's Bound Essence, 1 Vorgoth's Eye.
Keen Games' release post says the next Flame Level is waiting before you enter the Cinder's Cradle and that defeating the biggest threat in Embervale unlocks one more level, which the table above reflects: the final step needs Vorgoth's drops.
05What Each Upgrade Unlocks
- Armor tiers: every Flame upgrade automatically unlocks the armor sets of the next crafting tier (1.0 change), so you no longer miss sets by skipping a specific pickup.
- More altars: the release post says the next Flame Level before the Cinder's Cradle raises the maximum number of Flame Altars to 15, while the wiki's per-level capacity table lists 13 at Level 10. Both agree that unlocking Flame Level 11 raises it to 16, and the lower caps differ between sources, so check in game.
- Pushing back the Shroud: Flame Altars can push back the Shroud in 1.0, but only once Flame Level 11 is unlocked. Per the changelog, the required Flame Level can be lowered to any level in the world settings.
06Tips to Upgrade Faster
This section is our own advice, built on the requirements above.
- Spark is the bottleneck. It is needed at every step and only comes from Flame Shrines and Sanctums, so clear shrines as you explore instead of saving them.
- Check survivors before you farm. From the 2→3 step onward you need survivors housed with an assigned bed — recruit and house them in advance rather than assuming an idle survivor counts.
- Farm the boss head first. The head is a single drop tied to a fight, while the bulk materials are regional and farmable on demand.
- Verify costs in game. Levels 6–9 were rebalanced in 1.0 and the numbers above reflect the current wiki data, but a future balance pass could shift them again — a quick check against your own Strengthen the Flame screen costs nothing.
07FAQ
Short answers to the questions players ask most about Flame Altar upgrades.
FAQ
What is the max Flame Level in Enshrouded 1.0?
Flame Level 11. Keen Games' 1.0 changelog refers to it as the final Flame level, and it is unlocked after defeating Vorgoth. Unlocking it raises the maximum number of Flame Altars in the world to 16.
What do I need to upgrade my Flame Altar in Enshrouded?
Open the altar, choose Strengthen the Flame, and supply Spark, a themed set of regional materials, enough survivors housed in beds (from the 2→3 upgrade) and one boss trophy per step from the 2→3 upgrade onward. Exact costs are shown on that screen.
Where do I get Spark in Enshrouded?
From Flame Shrines and Sanctums out in the world. It is required at every Flame Level, so it is usually the slowest resource to gather.
Do survivors have to be in beds for Flame Level upgrades?
The community's working understanding is yes — survivors need an assigned, sheltered bed to count toward the requirement. The game doesn't state this explicitly on the Strengthen the Flame screen, so treat it as a practical rule of thumb rather than a confirmed mechanic.
Did 1.0 change the Flame Level costs?
Yes. Keen Games reduced the resource amounts for Flame Level recipes at levels 6, 7, 8 and 9 and swapped Electric Organs and Poison Stings for more common resources. Older Early Access guides therefore list higher costs for those steps.
How do I push back the Shroud with Flame Altars?
Reach Flame Level 11. Per the changelog, the required level can also be lowered to any level in the world settings.
