ARC Raiders How to Kill a Bastion Weak Points & Strategy

A Bastion is one of the most dangerous heavy ARC machines you'll run into mid-raid — a slow-moving walker with a main gun that can strip a light shield and most of your health in seconds if it gets a clean burst on you. It's also, once you know its pattern, one of the more consistently beatable heavy ARCs, because its weak points and attack tells are predictable. This guide covers where to shoot it, when to peek, and what to bring.

01Why Bastions Are Dangerous

A Bastion's main gun is its entire threat. Once it locks on, it lets loose a sustained gatling burst lasting a few seconds that can strip a light shield and a large chunk of your health if you're caught in the open at close-to-medium range — this is not an enemy you want to trade shots with out in the open. Its size and slow movement speed make it easy to keep at a distance, which is exactly how you want to fight it.

The good news: Bastions telegraph their firing sequence with an audible warning, and they have exploitable weak points that stagger them for an extended window. Fighting one correctly is less about raw damage output and more about using cover and punishing the stagger.

02Weak Points

The leg joints are the Bastion's primary and easiest-to-hit weak point — they're visually marked and take priority damage when you land shots on them. Do enough damage to a leg joint and the Bastion buckles, staggering for a significant window (around 15 seconds) during which it can't fight back effectively.

A second weak point sits on its rear — a marked canister that takes bonus damage compared to hitting its armored front or sides, and destroying it exposes a further vulnerable component underneath for even more damage. Circling to its back after the opening exchange, rather than always approaching head-on, meaningfully speeds up the fight.

03Attack Pattern and the Warning Cue

Before it opens fire, a Bastion emits a distinct, loud sound cue — this is your signal to break line of sight immediately, not to keep pushing for one more shot. Learning to react to that sound rather than to the first bullet is the single biggest survivability upgrade you can make in this fight.

Once it opens fire, expect one sustained burst of gatling fire lasting a few seconds aimed at your last known position, not a stop-and-start volley — so treat the warning screech as your cue to get fully behind cover, not to squeeze off one more shot first. Your real windows to peek and shoot are the quiet stretch after a burst ends and before it spins up again, plus the longer stagger window after a leg-joint hit.

04Best Loadout

Bring a heavy-ammo weapon — the Anvil, a hard-hitting hand cannon that runs on Heavy Ammo, is a commonly recommended pick against Bastions because heavy ammo does more damage per hit than light or medium options, which matters when you're working through armor to reach the leg joints and rear canister.

Grenades are worth carrying into this fight — landing one directly underneath the Bastion gets the most out of its blast radius, and a throw during the stagger window adds meaningful burst damage without exposing you to return fire. Equip the highest shield tier your current Augment allows — Bastions are exactly the kind of sustained-damage fight where a Medium or Heavy shield earns its weight.

05Step-by-Step Strategy

1. Approach behind hard cover with enough room to fall back further — don't commit to a position you can't retreat from.
2. Peek and fire at a leg joint when the Bastion isn't mid-burst; retreat to cover the moment you hear the warning cue or see it winding up.
3. When a leg buckles and it staggers, use the full window to unload — this is when you do the most damage per second of exposure.
4. After the stagger, reposition toward its rear if you can do so safely, to start working the marked rear canister instead of its front armor.
5. Repeat: peek during gaps and stagger windows, retreat on the warning cue, and avoid ever standing in the open at close range.

06Solo vs. Squad

A Bastion is very doable solo if you respect its damage output and never lose track of your escape route — the main risk solo is getting caught mid-reload during a burst. In a squad, split up so the Bastion can't focus one target for long, and call out the stagger window so everyone pushes damage at the same time rather than trading turns.
