Conquer the Stardew Valley Mines Floor by Floor

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

The Stardew Valley mines are 120 floors of rock, monsters, and ore standing between a struggling farmer and true prosperity. Clearing all 120 floors earns the Skull Key, which unlocks the infinite Skull Cavern and a steady supply of iridium. This guide covers every depth band, chest reward, and efficiency trick needed to reach the bottom fast.

01Mine Basics: Structure and the Elevator

The Mines open on the fifth day of Spring, Year 1 after a cutscene near your farm. Enter from the mountains northeast of town. Each of the 120 floors requires you to find a ladder — or a shaft — before you can descend. The elevator near the entrance saves a checkpoint every five floors, so when the day ends progress is never lost. Always exit through the elevator rather than passing out, which costs items and a medical bill.

Floors that are a multiple of 10 are special reward floors: no enemies spawn, and a chest waits at the centre with a guaranteed item. These floors are safe rest points to eat food, swap gear, and plan the next push.

02Ore Depth Bands: What to Expect Where

Resources shift dramatically as you go deeper. Understanding the three main zones lets you plan pickaxe upgrades and trips efficiently.

03Chest Rewards by Floor (Don't Miss These)

Every tenth floor hides a free item in a chest. These rewards are permanent — each player receives them once and they never reset. Knowing what to expect helps you plan gear transitions.

  1. Floor 10: Leather Boots — a modest early defence boost.
  2. Floor 20: Steel Smallsword — a solid weapon upgrade for the frost zone.
  3. Floor 40: Slingshot — situational; keep your sword equipped.
  4. Floor 80: Crystal Dagger or similar weapon plus better boots — essential for the lava zone.
  5. Floor 90: Obsidian Edge — one of the best mid-game swords, a big damage jump.
  6. Floor 100: Stardrop — permanently increases maximum energy; never skip this one.
  7. Floor 110: Space Boots — top-tier boots, carry these all the way to Skull Cavern.
  8. Floor 120: Skull Key — the ultimate prize, unlocking the Skull Cavern for unlimited iridium farming.

If 'Remixed Mine Rewards' is enabled at world creation, some chests will contain randomised items instead — the floor 120 Skull Key is always present regardless.

04Finding Ladders and Using Shafts

Every floor requires a ladder to appear before you can go deeper. Two ways to reveal one: break rocks or kill monsters. Each rock broken has a small chance (modified by daily luck) to spawn a ladder; each enemy killed has a much higher chance. On infested floors — marked with a red icon — every enemy must die before a ladder appears.

Shafts (holes) are openings that skip several floors in a single jump. They appear randomly when breaking rocks. Always take a shaft — there is no penalty beyond skipping elevator checkpoints on those floors.

05Bombs, Pickaxes, and Luck: Efficiency Essentials

Bombs are the single biggest speed multiplier in the mines. Craft them at higher Mining levels using Iron Ore and Coal, or buy Cherry Bombs earlier. One bomb in a dense rock cluster can reveal a ladder in seconds and hits every rock in the blast radius. Carry at least 10 on every deep run.

Pickaxe tier matters for speed — a Gold Pickaxe eliminates standard rocks in one swing. Upgrades take two in-game days at Clint's, so plan around rainy days when you would not mine anyway.

Daily Luck is broadcast each morning by the Fortune Teller on TV. On lucky days, ladder and shaft rates improve and gem nodes appear more often. Save bomb-heavy deep pushes for good luck days, and eat Spicy Eel (+1 Luck, +1 Speed) for fast runs.

Geodes collected while mining should be cracked open at Clint's Blacksmith for 25g each. Donating the minerals inside to the Museum completes collections and unlocks permanent rewards.

06Reaching Floor 120 and Beyond

The final push from floor 80 to floor 120 is the most dangerous stretch. Arrive with a full stack of food, the Obsidian Edge from floor 90, the boots from floor 110, and at least 15 bombs. Use elevator checkpoints at 85, 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, 115 so a bad run never costs more than five floors.

Opening the floor 120 chest grants the Skull Key, which appears in the Special Items and Powers tab. This key unlocks the Skull Cavern in the northwest corner of the Calico Desert — accessed by repairing the bus via the Vault Bundle or Joja membership. Skull Cavern has no floor limit and is the primary source of iridium ore.

FAQ

How many floors are in the Stardew Valley mines?

The Mines contain exactly 120 floors. The elevator near the entrance saves progress at every multiple of 5, so you never have to restart from floor 1 after leaving. Floor 120 holds the Skull Key chest, which is the mines' ultimate reward.

What is the fastest way to find a ladder in the mines?

Killing monsters gives a much higher chance per kill to spawn a ladder than breaking rocks does. On infested floors all monsters must die before any ladder appears. Using bombs on rock clusters gives multiple chances at once and is the fastest method when enemies are scarce.

Where do I crack open geodes found while mining?

Take geodes to Clint's Blacksmith in Pelican Town. He cracks each one for 25g and hands over whatever mineral or resource is inside. You can also build a Geode Crusher later for automated cracking at home using Coal as fuel.

What does the Skull Key unlock and where do I use it?

The Skull Key found in the floor 120 chest unlocks the Skull Cavern in the northwest corner of the Calico Desert. Travel there by repairing Pam's bus (Vault Community Center Bundle or Joja equivalent). Skull Cavern has no floor limit and is the best source of iridium ore in the game.
