Stardew Valley Farm Animals — Barn & Coop Complete Guide

Raising Stardew Valley animals turns a modest farm into a steady income engine. Coop birds produce eggs and feathers daily while barn livestock deliver milk, wool, and precious truffles. Understanding building tiers, friendship mechanics, and artisan processing is the difference between selling raw eggs for pocket change and banking thousands of gold every morning.

01Coop Tiers and the Animals They Unlock

Robin builds all three coop tiers at the Carpenter Shop. Each upgrade expands capacity and permanently adds new animal types you can buy from Marnie — or hatch in the incubator.

• Basic Coop (4,000g + 300 wood + 100 stone) — holds 4 animals, unlocks Chickens.
• Big Coop (10,000g + 400 wood + 150 stone) — holds 8 animals, adds an Incubator, unlocks Ducks and the ability to hatch Void Chickens.
• Deluxe Coop (20,000g + 500 wood + 200 stone) — holds 12 animals, adds the Auto-Feed System, unlocks Rabbits. The incubator can also hatch Dinosaurs and Golden Chickens from their special eggs.

The incubator hatches eggs in roughly 5–6 days; the Coopmaster profession halves that time. Once a special animal type is unlocked by the building tier, it can live in any coop of sufficient size.

02Barn Tiers and the Animals They Unlock

Barn animals are larger livestock that produce milk, cheese ingredients, wool, and the uniquely valuable truffle. Like coops, barns scale through three tiers from Robin.

• Basic Barn (6,000g + 350 wood + 150 stone) — holds 4 animals, unlocks Cows.
• Big Barn (12,000g + 450 wood + 200 stone) — holds 8 animals, unlocks Goats and enables animals to have babies.
• Deluxe Barn (25,000g + 550 wood + 300 stone) — holds 12 animals, adds the Auto-Feed System, unlocks Sheep and Pigs (and supports Ostriches hatched from Ginger Island eggs).

Pigs are widely considered the most profitable barn animal because they forage Truffles whenever they go outside on a non-winter, non-rainy day. Each truffle sells for 625g base, or processes into Truffle Oil (up to ~1,491g with Artisan) in an Oil Maker.

03Friendship, Happiness, and Why They Matter

Every animal tracks two hidden stats: Friendship (shown as hearts) and Mood. Both influence the quality of products an animal produces. High friendship raises the chance of Silver, Gold, and Iridium quality items; mood affects daily production rolls.

Building friendship is straightforward but requires daily attention:

1. Pet each animal once per day by interacting with it inside the building.
2. Make sure every animal is fed each day (hay on the trough, or auto-feed active) so it does not lose mood.
3. Open the door on sunny non-winter days so animals can graze on grass — grazing raises mood to maximum far faster than hay alone.
4. Keep a Heater installed in every building during winter so animals do not lose mood while stuck inside.
5. Use the Shepherd (barn) or Coopmaster (coop) profession at Farming level 10 to accelerate heart gain.

Grazing on grass sets mood to maximum (the animal 'looks really happy today'), which is the ideal condition for triggering higher-quality products.

04Feeding, Hay, and the Auto-Feed Upgrade

Animals eat one unit of Hay per day when they cannot graze outside. Hay is stored in Silos — each Silo holds 240 pieces. Without hay and without grass access, mood drops, which reduces product quality over time.

In a basic or Big building you must manually place hay on the feeding bench each morning. The Deluxe Coop and Deluxe Barn include an auto-feed system that distributes hay automatically overnight — one of the best quality-of-life upgrades in the game.

Build at least one Silo before buying animals, and expand silo count as your herd grows. A rough rule: one Silo per 8–10 animals ensures comfortable winter reserves if you also scythe grass into hay during spring, summer, and fall.

05Animal Products and Artisan Processing

Raw products have solid sell values, but processing them through Artisan machines — especially with the Artisan profession (+40%) — multiplies profit dramatically. The key pipelines:

• Eggs → Mayonnaise Machine: regular eggs make Mayonnaise; Large Eggs make two; Void Eggs make Void Mayonnaise; Dinosaur Eggs make Dinosaur Mayonnaise; Golden Eggs make Gold-Quality Mayonnaise.
• Milk → Cheese Press: Cow Milk makes Cheese; Large Milk makes Gold-Quality Cheese; Goat Milk makes Goat Cheese.
• Wool → Loom: Sheep Wool becomes Cloth. Rabbits also drop the valuable Rabbit's Foot.
• Truffles → Oil Maker: Pig Truffles press into Truffle Oil — the single most valuable regular artisan product from animals.
• Ostrich Eggs → Mayonnaise Machine: one Ostrich Egg yields several Mayonnaise, making it productive at scale.

Prioritise Mayonnaise Machines and Cheese Presses early. The Artisan multiplier stacks on top of quality bonuses, so high-friendship animals plus Artisan is where the real money is.

06Special and Rare Animals Worth Pursuing

Beyond standard Marnie purchases, several unique animals require specific steps but reward the effort:

• Void Chicken: Hatch from a Void Egg (a random Witch event drop, or bought from Krobus on Fridays). Produces Void Eggs for Void Mayonnaise.
• Dinosaur: Hatch a Dinosaur Egg (from Skull Cavern, artifact spots, fishing chests, or — in 1.6 — your max-friendship dog) in a Big or Deluxe Coop. Produces a Dinosaur Egg every 7 days.
• Golden Chicken: Unlocked via Perfection; produces Golden Eggs daily, which convert to three Gold-Quality Mayonnaise each.
• Ostrich: Hatch from an Ostrich Egg found on Ginger Island; needs a Big or Deluxe Barn and produces one egg every 7 days that yields several Mayonnaise.

For maximum efficiency, keep rare animals in a Deluxe building with auto-feed active so their daily products are never missed.
