Monster Hunter Wilds Layered Armor Complete Guide

Layered armor is Monster Hunter Wilds' transmog system — a cosmetic layer worn over your real gear that changes how your hunter looks without touching stats, defense, or skills. Once unlocked by finishing the main story, every crafted High Rank armor piece doubles as a layered option, letting you mix and match looks freely across head, chest, arms, waist, and legs.

01What Is Layered Armor and How It Works

Layered armor is a purely cosmetic system — a visual skin placed on top of your actual armor. Your hunter's real defense, elemental resistances, and armor skills are determined entirely by the equipped armor underneath. The layered set only controls how the armor looks during hunts and cutscenes.

This means you can run an endgame meta build for the skills while appearing in a flashy set or even Low Rank gear you loved early on. The two systems are completely independent — changing a layered piece never alters your build.

Layered armor works per-slot, and each of the five slots is set independently:

• Head — helmet and headgear
• Chest — chest and torso pieces
• Arms — gauntlets and arm armor
• Waist — belt and waist armor
• Legs — greaves and leg armor

Mixing pieces from completely different monster sets is fully supported — a Doshaguma helm with a Gore Magala chest and Rathalos legs is a perfectly valid combination.

02How to Unlock the Layered Armor System

Layered armor becomes available only after finishing the main story and rolling the credits — reaching High Rank on its own is not enough, so do not expect it partway through the High Rank campaign.

1. Progress through the main story all the way to its ending and roll the credits.
2. Return to any Base Camp and speak with Gemma the Smithy.
3. Open the Smithy menu, select Forge/Upgrade Armor, and switch to the High Rank tab.
4. Craft any High Rank armor piece. As soon as it is crafted, that piece is automatically registered as an available layered armor option — no separate quest or ticket is needed for this step.

There are no special tickets or secondary crafting steps for hunter layered armor once the system itself is unlocked — crafting the High Rank version of a piece unlocks both the functional armor and its cosmetic layered use. Pre-order and edition-bonus layered pieces (such as the Guild Knight or Feudal Soldier sets) are the exception and can be available earlier, during the main story.

03How to Equip and Change Layered Armor

Equipping layered armor is handled through the Appearance Menu in your tent, not through the Smithy or equipment box.

1. Travel to any Base Camp or Pop-up Camp.
2. Enter your Tent (the rest area inside camp).
3. Open the Appearance Menu (the head-shaped icon).
4. Select Equipment Appearance.
5. Choose the armor slot you want to customise.
6. Browse all registered layered pieces for that slot and select the look you want.
7. Repeat for any other slots, then confirm.

Changes take effect immediately and carry across all hunts until you change them again. Updating your layered armor never consumes materials or Zenny, so experiment freely.

04Palico Layered Armor: Dressing Up Your Felyne

Your Palico has its own layered armor system that works similarly, with a couple of differences:

• Unlock timing is the same — Palico layered armor becomes available alongside hunter layered armor once you finish the main story.
• Fewer slots — Palicos can only customise their helmet and body armor (two slots rather than five).
• Crafting required — unlike hunter layered armor, Palico layered pieces need a separate craft at the Smithy using materials and Zenny, in smaller quantities than regular equipment.
• Hide-all option — you can hide all Palico clothing to show the natural Felyne appearance underneath.
• Edition bonuses — Deluxe/Premium Edition owners receive exclusive Palico layered sets.

To equip Palico layered armor, follow the same tent path but select Palico Equipment Appearance instead.

05Event Quest and Special Layered Sets

While most layered armor comes from crafting standard High Rank sets, some appearances are locked behind specific activities:

• Event quests — limited-time challenges award exclusive High Rank sets that cannot be crafted through normal play. Since all event reward armor is High Rank, it becomes usable as layered armor once crafted.
• Seasonal festivals — festivals offer unique cosmetic rewards including layered pieces and tickets obtainable only during the event window.
• Collaboration and DLC sets — some sets are added directly to the Appearance Menu without a Smithy craft.
• Standard monster sets — sets themed around specific monsters become layered options once their High Rank versions are crafted.

Check the event quest board regularly if building out a layered collection matters to you — event quests rotate and some sets return only during specific festivals.

06Tips for Getting the Most From Layered Armor

A few habits make managing layered armor much smoother:

• Prioritise the look you want, not the armor you need — any High Rank craft unlocks that appearance permanently, so crafting sets purely for looks is valid.
• Craft Low Rank favourites in High Rank — Low Rank sets are not available as layered armor, but if a High Rank version of the set exists, crafting it unlocks the look.
• Build your collection gradually — as you farm monsters for upgrade materials, you accumulate a large layered wardrobe without extra effort.
• Mix monster themes freely — per-slot independence is intentional; hybrid appearances often look more unique than full sets.
• Check event quests before they expire — exclusive sets from limited events may not be craftable later.
• Use the Appearance Menu between hunts — there is no penalty for changing layered armor between quests.
