Will GTA Online Shut Down for GTA 6? Character & Money Transfer Explained

GTA Online players have two separate worries as GTA 6 approaches: will the game they've played for years get switched off, and will their character, money, and progress carry over to whatever comes next. The honest answer to both is grounded in what Rockstar has and hasn't said — not in rumor.

01Is GTA Online Shutting Down When GTA 6 Releases?

No. GTA Online — the multiplayer mode built on GTA 5 — is not shutting down when GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. It has continued receiving major content updates throughout 2026, and Rockstar has given no indication it plans to end support. GTA 6 itself launches as a single-player-only experience, with no separate "GTA 6 Online" mode confirmed at launch.

That means, at least for the foreseeable future, you'll have two separate games running in parallel: the existing GTA Online (still active, still updated) and GTA 6's single-player campaign. Nothing Rockstar has said links the two or sets an end date for GTA Online.

02Will Your GTA Online Character Transfer to GTA 6?

Rockstar has not confirmed any transfer of GTA Online characters, appearance, or progress into GTA 6 or a future GTA 6 Online. There's no official statement — positive or negative — specifically about character transfers, which is why you'll see conflicting claims online. Treat anything more specific than "nothing is confirmed" as speculation until Rockstar says otherwise on the Rockstar Newswire.

03Will Your GTA$ and Progress Carry Over?

This is the part Rockstar's own history makes fairly predictable, even without an official statement: Rockstar has never carried GTA Online money, vehicles, or rank forward into a new mainline title. When GTA Online launched a few weeks after GTA 5 in October 2013, it started every player from zero — there was no transfer from Red Dead Redemption or any earlier Rockstar online mode.

There's also a practical reason to expect a clean slate. Years of promotions, bonuses, and glitches have left the GTA Online in-game economy heavily inflated for veteran players.
