GTA 6 Region Locked on PS5 — What Retail Buyers Need to Know

Rockstar Support has confirmed that physical GTA 6 (Grand Theft Auto VI) retail codes for PS5 are region-locked — a printed code bought in one region will only redeem on a PlayStation Network account registered to that same region. Xbox Series X|S retail codes are not affected by this restriction. 01What Rockstar Confirmed

Rockstar Support's confirmation, reported by multiple outlets in late July 2026, boils down to two points:

• PS5 retail download codes are region-locked. The code only redeems on a PSN account registered to the same region the code was sold in.
• Xbox Series X|S retail download codes are not region-locked. An Xbox code can be redeemed regardless of which region the purchasing account is set to.

This applies specifically to the boxed, code-in-a-box retail edition — not to digital pre-orders bought directly from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, which are already tied to your account's home region at the point of purchase.

02PS5 Region Groupings

Rockstar's support page groups supported PS5 code regions as follows:

• North America — United States and Canada.
• Brazil — its own region, separate from the rest of Latin America.
• LATAM — the rest of Latin America (including Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru).
• United Kingdom — its own region, separate from the rest of Europe.
• Rest of EMEA and Asia — most of continental Europe plus a wider group of EMEA and Asian markets.
• Saudi Arabia & UAE — grouped together as their own region.
• Korea — South Korea specifically.
• Japan — its own region, with an added expiry condition (see below).
• Rest of Asia — remaining Asian markets not covered by the groupings above.

A code bought at retail in one of these regions will only redeem on a PSN account registered to that same region or grouping. Buying a PS5 retail copy while travelling, or from an import retailer, only works if your PSN account matches the code's region.

03Japan: The 170-Day Expiry

Japan carries an extra condition beyond the region lock itself: Rockstar has confirmed that, due to local regulations, Japanese PS5 product codes expire 170 days after issuance — meaning the code must be redeemed within roughly five and a half months of the November 19, 2026 launch date, or it stops working entirely.

This expiry is specific to Japan and does not apply to the other listed regions. If you're buying a Japanese retail copy — whether locally or through an import seller — redeem the code well before that window closes.

04Why Xbox Isn't Affected

Rockstar's confirmation draws a clear line between the two platforms: Xbox Series X|S retail codes work regardless of the account's region, while PS5 codes do not. Rockstar has not given a technical or business reason for the difference — it comes down to how each platform holder structures regional code redemption on their own storefront, not a decision unique to GTA 6.

Practically, this means an Xbox physical copy is the safer option if you're buying from an overseas retailer or an import listing and aren't sure your account region will match. A PS5 copy from the same listing carries real redemption risk if the regions don't line up.

05How to Avoid Getting Stuck With a Dead Code

• Check your PSN account's region before buying. It's visible in your PlayStation account settings. PSN account regions generally cannot be changed after the fact, so this is the fixed constraint you're working around, not the code.
• Match the retailer's country to your account region. Buying a US-market retail copy only works cleanly if your PSN account is also set to a North American region — and so on for every other grouping above.
• Be extra cautious with import listings and marketplace resellers. A cheaper price from an overseas seller isn't a deal if the code can't redeem on your account. Confirm the region explicitly with the seller before buying, and treat listings that don't state a region as a red flag.
• If you're in Japan, redeem promptly. The 170-day window starts from the code's issuance, not from when you get around to using it.
• When in doubt, buy digital or buy Xbox. A digital PS Store pre-order is tied to your account by default, so region mismatch isn't a risk. If physical media matters to you and you're an importer, Xbox Series X|S sidesteps the whole issue.
