GTA 6 Combat Mechanics Explained — What's Confirmed, What's Leaked

Updated August 20267 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

GTA 6 (Grand Theft Auto VI) hasn't released yet, so Rockstar hasn't published a full combat breakdown — but a real source exists for a surprising amount of what we know: the September 2022 security breach, where an attacker leaked roughly 90 clips of early development footage and debug tools. Rockstar itself confirmed that leak was authentic, which makes it a genuinely useful (if outdated) source, distinct from the pile of unverified rumors that's grown around it since. This guide separates what that leak actually showed from what's been reported as changed since, and flags what's still an open question.

01How to Read This Guide

Every mechanic below is labeled by where it comes from:

GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026, with a third official trailer expected to premiere on Netflix on August 27, 2026 — closer to launch is when a real, Rockstar-sourced combat breakdown is likely to show up.

02Restraining NPCs With Zip-Ties

One of the clearest combat-adjacent mechanics from the 2022 leak: during a diner robbery sequence, Lucia restrains a hostage with zip ties while Jason holds the room. It's a non-lethal way to neutralize a bystander or witness without killing them or letting them flee to call for help.

This is one of the most consistently referenced details from the leak across gaming coverage in the years since, which is worth noting given how much of the surrounding leak discourse has been exaggerated or invented — the zip-tie moment itself is on video, not secondhand description.

03Human Shields

The same leaked material shows the ability to grab a hostage and use them as a human shield during a firefight — mobile cover that moves with you rather than a static object. Like the zip-tie mechanic, this comes from the hostage-taking sequences in the leaked footage rather than anything Rockstar has shown officially since.

04Hand-Switching While Aiming

Leaked footage shows Jason switching a rifle between his left and right hand while carrying and aiming it — fast enough that it looks like a single button toggle rather than a full animation you'd wait out. The leaked debug tools separately list a "Switch Side" action among the available combat animations, which lines up with what's visible in the footage.

05The Debug Tools' Combat Action List

Beyond what's directly visible in the video clips, the leak also exposed a list of animation/action names from Rockstar's internal debug tools. For combat and movement specifically, that list included: Cover Mode, Crouch, Prone, Downed Self Revive, Downed Suicide, Switch Side, Melee Attack, Melee Grapple, Look Behind, Surrender, Buddy Comms, and Buddy Ping.

This is a list of what the tools could trigger in that development build — not confirmation that every one of these ships unchanged in the final game. Several years and, by all accounts, a substantial amount of iteration separate that 2022 build from the game releasing in November 2026.

06Cover System: Reworked Since the Leak

This is the clearest example of something the leak showed that has reportedly since changed. The 2022 build's debug tools included a more dynamic, context-sensitive cover system — but subsequent leak-tracking reports say Rockstar moved away from it in favor of a more traditional, GTA V-style button-press cover system. Treat the original leaked cover system as outdated rather than representative of what's shipping.

07Prone: Still an Open Question

The 2022 leak's debug list included "Prone" alongside crouching and crawling animations, so going prone clearly existed as a feature in that early build. What happens to it between then and launch is genuinely unclear — some reporting on more recent leaks claims it was cut before the final version, while other coverage treats it as intact. Neither claim traces back to an official Rockstar statement, and this guide isn't going to pretend otherwise. Until Rockstar shows it directly, treat prone as unconfirmed for the shipping game either way.

08What This Guide Isn't Claiming

A lot of GTA 6 "combat mechanics" content online blends the details above with pure speculation — environmental sound design reacting to gunfire, expanded melee combo systems, and other specifics that don't trace back to the 2022 leak, later leaks, or anything Rockstar has shown. None of that appears here. For the weapon roster and carry-limit system specifically, see our weapons guide, which covers what's been shown in official trailers separately from this leak-sourced combat rundown.

FAQ

Can you take hostages in GTA 6?

Yes, based on the Rockstar-authenticated September 2022 leak: a diner robbery sequence shows Lucia zip-tying a hostage while Jason covers the room, and the same footage shows hostages being used as human shields during a firefight. Rockstar hasn't shown this officially since, but the leak itself was confirmed genuine, even though it was captured from an early development build.

Does GTA 6 have hand-switching or shoulder-switching while aiming?

Leaked footage shows Jason switching a rifle between hands quickly enough to look like a single-button toggle, and the leaked debug tools list a matching "Switch Side" action. It hasn't been shown in an official Rockstar trailer yet, so treat it as leaked, not confirmed, until Rockstar shows it directly.

Is prone confirmed in GTA 6?

It appeared in the 2022 leak's debug tools alongside crouching and crawling animations, so it existed in that early build. Whether it survived into the final game is genuinely unclear — some later-leak reporting claims it was cut, other coverage treats it as still present, and neither traces back to an official Rockstar statement. Treat it as unconfirmed either way until Rockstar shows it directly.

What is the GTA 6 cover system like?

The 2022 leak's debug tools pointed to a more dynamic, context-sensitive cover system, but later leak-tracking reports say Rockstar replaced it with a more traditional, GTA V-style button-press cover system. The originally leaked version should be treated as outdated rather than representative of the shipping game.

How many weapons can you carry in GTA 6?

That's covered in detail in our dedicated weapons guide — the short version is a leaked, not yet Rockstar-confirmed, carry limit similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, with extra weapons stored in your vehicle rather than an unlimited personal inventory.
