Ghost of Yōtei Mythic Tales All 7 Locations & Rewards
Ghost of Yōtei contains seven Mythic Tales — legendary side quests, most told by Ugetsu the Storyteller, each tied to a figure or event from Ezo's past. They are the game's most elaborately designed side content, spanning multi-step objectives across entire regions and rewarding unique gear unavailable anywhere else: exclusive armor sets, weapon kits, charms, and techniques that meaningfully shift how Atsu plays. None of the Mythic Tales are missable — you can complete them during free-roam after finishing the main story — but finding the storyteller is not always obvious, and some tales have unlock conditions that span the whole map.
01What Are Mythic Tales?
Mythic Tales are a category of side quest distinct from the regular Tales of Ezo. Where shorter quests typically involve helping a local villager or clearing a camp, Mythic Tales follow a legendary narrative structure: Atsu finds Ugetsu the Storyteller at a specific location, hears a tale about a warrior or event from Ezo's history, and then must fulfil its conditions — tracking down disciples, collecting hidden items, or unlocking an estate gate — before a climactic confrontation rewards her with something no other quest provides.
There are exactly seven Mythic Tales in Ghost of Yōtei, each associated with a different region of Ezo. The storyteller for most tales is Ugetsu, a recurring NPC who appears at different landmark locations across the map. Each tale has its own lore thread and difficulty curve, but the structure is consistent: find the trigger, complete the objectives, claim the reward.
Mythic Tales rewards are the highest-tier equipment outside of the main-story boss rewards. Two tales grant full armor sets with distinct playstyle bonuses, two tales distribute exclusive weapon kits and unique headgear, one grants a powerful new combat technique, and the Takezo saga distributes five charms plus a Dual Katana technique across its two interconnected quests.
02Takezo the Unrivaled
This is the most geographically spread Mythic Tale in the game. Rather than starting at a single storyteller encounter and proceeding in a linear direction, Takezo the Unrivaled sends Atsu across Ezo to confront a series of named disciples — warriors who studied under the legendary duelist Takezo — at Dueling Trees spread across different regions. It is also the prerequisite for the second Takezo quest.
- Region: Multiple regions — all five Dueling Trees with Takezo's disciples are in Yōtei Grasslands (two trees) and Tokachi Range (three trees).
- How to unlock: Find Ugetsu the Storyteller at any Dueling Tree in Yōtei Grasslands or Tokachi Range and listen to the tale. Dueling Trees are marked on the map as optional samurai duel locations.
- Objective: Defeat all five Disciples of Takezo, one at each of the five Dueling Trees spread across Yōtei Grasslands and Tokachi Range.
- Rewards: Five unique charms — Charm of the Unrelenting Warrior, Charm of Bold Deflection, Charm of Renewed Determination, Charm of Bracing Victory, and Charm of the Stout Heart — plus the Dual Slash (Dual Katana Spirit Attack). Completing this quest unlocks The Five Teachings.
The disciples each fight in a specific style tied to Takezo's teachings. Approach each duel with the appropriate weapon alignment active — check what weapon the disciple carries before drawing — and use Perfect Parries to create openings. The tale does not have a time limit; you can complete the five duels in any order across a full playthrough.
03The Five Teachings
The Five Teachings is the direct continuation of Takezo the Unrivaled and the conclusion of the two-part Takezo saga. It unlocks automatically in Atsu's quest log after the final disciple is defeated — no additional storyteller encounter is needed to begin it.
- Region: Yōtei Grasslands — Mount Yōtei summit, reached via the western shrine path.
- How to unlock: Complete Takezo the Unrivaled. Equip all five charms earned from that quest simultaneously, then climb to the summit of Mount Yōtei using the shrine path on the western face of the mountain.
- Objective: Reach the summit with all five Takezo charms equipped and challenge Takezo himself to a final duel.
- Rewards: Straw Hat of the Unrivaled (headgear), the Gilded Night Weapon Kit, and the Gilded Dawn Weapon Kit — two exclusive cosmetic skins for Atsu's weapons.
Mount Yōtei's summit is reached via a dedicated shrine path rather than open traversal. The summit duel against Takezo is significantly harder than any of the five disciples and is the intended capstone of the charms acquired in the first quest — equip all five before beginning the climb or the final encounter will not trigger.
04The Undying Samurai
The Undying Samurai is a tale of a legendary warrior who cannot be killed — or so the story claims. The quest plays with that myth across a multi-step objective that begins with a storyteller encounter and expands into an exploration challenge before a climactic boss fight.
- Region: Ishikari Plain — Storyteller's Rest, north of Nakagoya Spring.
- How to unlock: Find Ugetsu at Storyteller's Rest in Ishikari Plain and hear the tale.
- Objective: Locate four wind chimes hidden across Ishikari Plain and use them to summon the Undying Samurai; then defeat him.
- Reward: Armor of the Undying — a complete armor set.
The four wind chimes are not individually marked on the map and require exploration of the Ishikari Plain region to locate. Listen for audio cues — wind chimes produce a faint tonal sound that grows louder as you approach. Completing this tale before advancing deep into the main story gives access to the Armor of the Undying while significant content remains ahead.
05The Spider Lily General
The Spider Lily General is built around an environmental puzzle mechanic — an estate hidden behind a locked gate that requires collecting keys scattered through the surrounding area before Atsu can face what waits inside.
- Region: Tokachi Range — south of the region at Shizunai Woods, near a location called the Mysterious Gate.
- How to unlock: Travel to the Mysterious Gate in the south of Tokachi Range and speak to Ugetsu there.
- Objective: Collect four keys from locations around Tokachi Range to unlock the estate gate, then confront the Spider Lily General inside.
- Reward: Spider Lily Armor — a complete armor set.
The estate becomes accessible once all four keys are found and the gate is opened. The final confrontation inside the estate is the hardest encounter in the quest — using a Tanegashima shot or Yumi longbow to open before closing to melee is a reliable approach against armored elite enemies in enclosed spaces.
06The Legend of Opusnupuri
The Legend of Opusnupuri is the most tonally distinctive Mythic Tale, drawing on Ainu oral tradition rather than samurai myth. Husko Kotan in Nayoro Wilds is an Ainu settlement, and the quest reflects the cultural texture of that region of northern Ezo.
- Region: Nayoro Wilds — Husko Kotan settlement.
- How to unlock: Find the Yukar Storyteller at Husko Kotan in Nayoro Wilds — they perform a traditional Ainu oral narrative (Yukar) that begins the tale.
- Objective: Follow the quest objectives tied to the Nayoro Wilds region to their conclusion.
- Reward: Charm of True Aim — a charm that improves Atsu's ranged accuracy.
Nayoro Wilds is one of the northern regions of Ezo. If you have already visited Husko Kotan during main story progression or regional exploration, the storyteller will be available there without needing a separate detour — check the settlement on your return pass through the area.
07The Crimson Kimono
The Crimson Kimono is the Mythic Tale most directly tied to the stealth playstyle. Its reward, the Crimson Kimono armor, is one of the highest-value pieces of equipment in the game for players who build around the Kusarigama and chain assassination approach.
- Region: Teshio Ridge — Sakuru Woods, at a distinctive twin-trunk tree known as the Mother Daughter Tree.
- How to unlock: Find Ugetsu the Storyteller at the Mother Daughter Tree in Sakuru Woods, Teshio Ridge, and listen to the tale.
- Objective: Follow the tale's objectives through Teshio Ridge to the final confrontation.
- Reward: Crimson Kimono Armor — extends the Kusarigama's assassination reach, reduces enemy detection range, and enables Kunai-triggered chain assassinations.
The Crimson Kimono armor pairs directly with the Kusarigama stealth build — the extended assassination pull reaches targets that would otherwise require repositioning, and the detection reduction extends the window for setting up chain kills. Teshio Ridge is a mid-to-late game region; the Mother Daughter Tree is a prominent landmark visible from the road through Sakuru Woods.
08The Storm Blade
The Storm Blade is the only Mythic Tale that rewards three distinct items simultaneously — a cosmetic face piece, a headgear item, and a full weapon kit — alongside a combat technique that is exclusive to Mythic Tale content.
- Region: Oshima Coast — southwest corner at the Forgotten Shrine.
- How to unlock: Travel to the Forgotten Shrine on the southwest coast of Oshima and speak to Ugetsu at the shrine steps.
- Objective: Follow the tale's objectives tied to the Forgotten Shrine and its surroundings to the end.
- Rewards: Ghost Mask (face cosmetic), Stag Helmet (headgear), Storm Blade Weapon Kit (cosmetic weapon skin), and the Dance of Wrath combat technique.
Oshima Coast is the southernmost large region of Ezo. The Forgotten Shrine is a named landmark on the map — it is larger than the Inari Shrines used for charm hunting and is not to be confused with them. The Dance of Wrath technique earned here is exclusive to this Mythic Tale and cannot be unlocked through the standard skill tree.
09Tips for Finding and Completing Every Mythic Tale
- None are missable: All seven Mythic Tales remain available in post-story free-roam. If you missed a tale while following the main story, return to the relevant region during free-roam.
- The Takezo saga must be done in order: The Five Teachings cannot be started until Takezo the Unrivaled is fully completed and all five disciples are defeated. Equip all five charms before climbing Mount Yōtei — the final encounter will not trigger without them.
- Dueling Trees serve double duty: Each of the five Dueling Trees in Yōtei Grasslands and Tokachi Range is both an optional samurai duel location and a Takezo the Unrivaled quest location. If you cleared optional duels before starting the Mythic Tale, revisit the trees — the Takezo disciples are separate encounters from the standard duelists found there.
- Wind chimes and keys are not map-marked: The objectives in The Undying Samurai (four wind chimes) and The Spider Lily General (four estate keys) require area exploration. Use Atsu's tracking sense to highlight nearby interactable objects when you are in the search zone.
- Do The Crimson Kimono before investing in stealth skill upgrades: The Crimson Kimono armor fundamentally changes how the Kusarigama stealth build functions. Complete this tale before spending skill points on chain assassination upgrades so you can build around the armor's bonuses from the start.
- The Charm of True Aim from Opusnupuri upgrades your bow damage ceiling: Pair it with the Concentration technique (ranged aim slow-motion) and the Yumi Longbow for the highest sustained ranged damage output available.

Do you need all five charms equipped for The Five Teachings in Ghost of Yōtei?
Yes — The Five Teachings requires Atsu to have all five charms earned from Takezo the Unrivaled equipped simultaneously before reaching the summit of Mount Yōtei. The final encounter with Takezo at the summit will not trigger unless all five charms (Charm of the Unrelenting Warrior, Charm of Bold Deflection, Charm of Renewed Determination, Charm of Bracing Victory, and Charm of the Stout Heart) are in Atsu's active loadout. Equip them at the loadout screen before beginning the climb.
