Ghost of Yōtei Best Weapons All 7 Types Ranked

Updated July 20269 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

Ghost of Yōtei gives Atsu access to seven weapon types — five melee and two main ranged categories — spanning over 70 cosmetic weapon kits. Unlike most open-world games where you pick a favourite and upgrade it to carry the late game, Yōtei is built around a weapon alignment system: each melee weapon type counters a specific class of enemy and receives diminished returns against another. Switching weapons mid-fight based on who you are currently facing is the core skill that separates proficient players from beginners. This guide covers every weapon category, the full alignment counter chart, which weapons to unlock and upgrade first, and the best combinations for each playstyle.

01How the Weapon System Works

Atsu can carry and swap between all unlocked weapons at any point — including mid-combo, during dodges, and while enemies are in the middle of attacking. There is no stamina penalty for switching, and no cooldown between swaps. Weapon rotation is a moment-to-moment decision in every fight, not a pre-camp choice.

The alignment system is what makes switching matter. When Atsu's currently equipped melee weapon counters the type of enemy she is fighting, she enters a 'weapon aligned' state. Every hit in this state deals significantly higher stagger damage, which breaks enemy guards faster and opens enemies to finishing blows earlier. Fighting an aligned enemy with the wrong weapon extends the fight, wastes healing resources, and — against brutes and elite enemies — can make encounters unmanageable.

Ghost of Yōtei's melee weapons divide into five types: Katana, Dual Katana, Ōdachi, Yari, and Kusarigama. Each one is aligned against a specific enemy class. Ranged weapons — the bow family and the Tanegashima matchlock — sit outside the counter system and are effective openers and finishers against any enemy type. Throwable quickfire tools (kunai, smoke bombs, ceramic bombs) supplement the melee kit throughout the game and are not replaced by weapon progression.

02Weapon Alignment Counter Chart

The five melee weapon alignments follow consistent logic: the counter weapon either exploits a structural weakness (chains strip shields, heavy strikes stagger brutes) or interrupts the enemy's own attack pattern (iai draw of the Dual Katana cuts off polearm reach advantage before it lands). Identify the enemy's weapon or type, equip the counter, and your stagger damage jumps immediately.

In mixed groups, prioritise the most dangerous or disruptive enemy first: a shield bearer who shuts down your approach, or a brute winding up an unblockable heavy hit. Swap to the counter weapon, stagger that target, then rotate to the next threat as the lineup changes.

03Best Melee Weapons

Dual Katana — Best Overall: The Dual Katana earns its reputation as the top overall melee weapon through relentless offensive pressure. Its rapid combo strings deal constant hits that prevent enemies from finding a gap to attack, and its iai draw technique interrupts polearm and spear users mid-swing by cutting inside their reach advantage. Polearm enemies are among the most common archetypes in Ezo's mid-to-late game, making the Dual Katana's alignment relevant in nearly every camp encounter. Its main weakness is against heavily armored brutes — switch to the Ōdachi for those targets, then return. Unlocked by completing The Way of the Dual Katana mission in Yōtei Grasslands.

Kusarigama — Essential Second Weapon: Shield bearers appear in nearly every mid-to-late game enemy camp, and no other weapon strips shields as efficiently as the Kusarigama. Its heavy attack wraps the chain around the shield and tears it away, immediately exposing the enemy to full attacks. Outside of shield matchups, the Kusarigama's medium-range assassination pull extends Atsu's kill reach beyond standard melee distance — useful for reaching isolated targets that would otherwise require repositioning. Treat it as a dedicated counter tool rather than a primary damage source.

Katana — Reliable Foundation: The Katana is the default weapon and the most versatile option in the game. It handles every combat situation adequately, and it excels specifically against sword and katana-wielding duelists where its precision timing creates a direct alignment bonus. Among all melee weapons, the Katana has the most forgiving parry timing and the most straightforward attack rhythm, making it ideal for learning combat fundamentals, facing enemy swordsmen in one-on-one duels, and any situation where steady, predictable output is needed over burst pressure.

Ōdachi — Best Against Brutes: The Ōdachi sacrifices attack speed for the highest single-hit damage output of any melee weapon. Against heavily armored brute enemies — those whose thick armor resists lighter weapons — the Ōdachi's alignment bonus combined with its natural stagger damage breaks through defenses that the Katana or Dual Katana chip at inefficiently. Its defensive guard charge pushes brutes back and repositions them. Slow attack animations make it unsuitable against faster or evasive enemy types; swap back to the Dual Katana once brutes are staggered or down.

Yari — Crowd Control and Sickle Counter: The Yari is the alignment counter against sickle and chain-weapon enemies (dual kama and enemy kusarigama users). Its extended reach and sweeping attack arc also catches enemies who sidestep individual hits — making it situationally useful in multi-target encounters where brutes are not present. Techniques from the Melee / Yari skill tree extend the sweep arc further. The Yari is a strong situational pick rather than a carry weapon, but against the enemy types it counters it is the most efficient melee option available.

04Best Ranged Weapons

Ranged weapons sit outside the melee alignment counter system and deal effective damage against any enemy type. Use them to open engagements before stealth breaks, eliminate high-value targets at distance, and neutralise enemy archers who interrupt melee combats from elevated positions.

Yumi Longbow — Best Sustained Ranged Weapon: The Yumi functions as a sniper weapon — it delivers high single-shot damage, penetrates helmets, and maintains accuracy at distances where the Hankyu's shots begin to fall off. Fully upgraded and paired with the Concentration technique (slows time while aiming) and the Mother's Charm (arrow damage bonus), the Yumi eliminates armored captains and elite enemies from maximum range before a camp alert triggers. Available from Ran the Bowyer at the Shadow Inn.

Hankyu Medium Bow — Fast Follow-Up: The Hankyu fires significantly faster than the Yumi, making it more practical for quickly targeting moving enemies in active combat, interrupting enemy archers, and clearing multiple lower-health targets in rapid succession. For players who favour a hybrid melee-ranged approach, the Hankyu is the more fluid tool — use the Yumi to open with a high-value elimination, then transition to the Hankyu and melee as the camp responds. Also available from Ran the Bowyer.

Tanegashima Matchlock — Highest Burst Damage: The Tanegashima is the hardest-hitting individual shot in the game. It pierces armor and drops most standard enemies outright, with enough damage to take a significant portion of health from elite enemies and mini-bosses. Its limitations are a lengthy reload time, ammunition cost, and a loud report that alerts nearby enemies regardless of stealth position. Use it as a single opening shot against a high-threat target — armored captain, named enemy, camp commander — then draw melee weapons as enemies close the distance.

05Best Weapon Combinations and Builds

Because all weapons swap instantly with no penalty, the practical question is which two or three weapons cover the most situations together.

06Weapon Upgrade Priority

Weapon upgrades consume metal and powder — materials that are limited in the early game. Concentrating resources on one primary weapon delivers far better returns than spreading upgrades thinly across the full kit.

  1. Upgrade the Dual Katana first and push it toward maximum tier before investing heavily in other melee weapons. It covers the most frequent combat scenarios and its upgrade returns (combo extension, damage increase) are immediately noticeable. Equip the Charm of Kanayago during exploration phases to accelerate metal and powder collection.
  2. Upgrade the Kusarigama to at least the second tier. Shield bearers become ubiquitous in mid-game camps and a second-tier Kusarigama is sufficient to handle them efficiently without requiring further investment.
  3. Upgrade your primary ranged weapon — Yumi Longbow or Tanegashima — to the second tier before pushing any weapon past its third tier. Ranged upgrades improve shot reliability in ways that matter throughout the game, and the material cost to reach tier two is lower than late-tier melee upgrades.
  4. Finish the Dual Katana to maximum tier before investing in the Katana, Yari, or Ōdachi. Those situational weapons perform their counter role adequately at lower tiers and do not require maximum upgrades to be effective against the enemy types they are aligned against.

FAQ

What is the best weapon in Ghost of Yōtei?

The Dual Katana is the best overall melee weapon in Ghost of Yōtei — it delivers the highest sustained offensive pressure, counters the common polearm and spear enemy archetype, and its rapid combo strings prevent enemies from retaliating. For specific matchups, the Kusarigama is essential against shield bearers, the Ōdachi is strongest against brutes and heavily armored enemies, and the Katana excels in precise one-on-one duels against swordsmen. The Yumi Longbow is the best ranged option for sustained distance damage. Since weapons swap instantly mid-fight, carry multiple types and rotate based on the enemy you are currently facing.

How does weapon alignment work in Ghost of Yōtei?

Weapon alignment is a counter system where each melee weapon type deals significantly higher stagger damage against a specific enemy class. When Atsu's equipped weapon counters the enemy type, she becomes 'weapon aligned' — hitting harder and breaking guards faster. The five alignments are: Kusarigama against shield bearers, Yari against sickle and chain-weapon users, Ōdachi against brutes and heavily armored enemies, Katana against sword and katana duelists, and Dual Katana against polearm and spear users. Using the wrong weapon in an aligned matchup extends fights and wastes resources.

How do you get the Dual Katana in Ghost of Yōtei?

The Dual Katana is unlocked by completing The Way of the Dual Katana mission in Yōtei Grasslands. It is not available from the start of the game. Once unlocked, it becomes part of Atsu's permanent weapon kit and can be upgraded at any armorer across Ezo. It is the highest-priority weapon to unlock early due to its alignment coverage against polearm enemies and its overall offensive output.

What weapon should I use against shield bearers in Ghost of Yōtei?

Use the Kusarigama against all shield-bearing enemies. The Kusarigama's heavy attack wraps its chain around the shield and tears it away, stripping the enemy's defense far faster than any other weapon. No other melee weapon has a reliable built-in shield-breaking mechanism. Once the shield is down, you can switch to your preferred weapon to finish the fight or continue with the Kusarigama.

What is the best ranged weapon in Ghost of Yōtei?

The Yumi Longbow is the best ranged weapon for sustained use — it deals high damage per shot, penetrates helmets, and maintains accuracy at long range. The Tanegashima Matchlock delivers higher burst damage and pierces armor on a single shot, making it the best opener for heavily armored targets, but its slow reload and loud alert sound limit sustained use. For a fluid hybrid melee-ranged approach the Hankyu medium bow is more practical due to its faster fire rate.
