Balatro Boss Blinds How to Beat Them

Updated July 20268 min readBy the HowToPlayHub team

The Boss Blind is the third and final round of every Ante, and unlike the Small and Big Blind, you can't skip it. Each one bends the rules against you in a specific way — debuffing a suit, shrinking your hand, wiping your money — and the runs that make it past Ante 4 or 5 are almost always the ones that planned for that instead of getting caught out by it.

01What Are Boss Blinds?

Every Ante has three Blinds: Small, Big, and Boss, played in that order. The Boss Blind demands a higher score than the previous two Blinds in the same Ante and adds a unique special effect on top — anything from debuffing certain cards to restricting which hands you're allowed to play. Unlike the Small and Big Blind, the Boss Blind cannot be skipped; you have to beat it or the run ends there.

There's a wide roster of possible Boss Blind effects, and which one you get is randomized per Ante, so part of beating them consistently is building a deck flexible enough that no single effect can completely shut it down.

02General Strategies That Beat Almost Any Boss

03Common Early Boss Blinds and How to Beat Them

You'll meet these repeatedly in the first several Antes, so it's worth knowing them by name:

04Suit and Rank Debuff Bosses

A separate family of Boss Blinds debuffs an entire suit or a category of ranks (like face cards) for the round — debuffed cards can still form a poker hand, but they don't contribute to scoring or trigger card-based effects. These hit suit-focused Flush builds and face-card-focused Jokers particularly hard.

The general counter is the same one that applies everywhere in this guide: don't build a deck that's helpless the moment one suit or rank category is turned off. Keeping a secondary hand type or a Joker lineup that doesn't lean entirely on one suit means a debuff Boss costs you a strong round instead of costing you the run.

05When to Skip vs Fight

You can't skip a Boss Blind itself, but you can choose to skip the Small and/or Big Blind earlier in the same Ante for a Tag reward instead of playing them. Skipping is worth it when you're already confident you can clear the Boss Blind and would rather bank a useful Tag (some of which let you reroll or negate the coming Boss effect) than grind out an easy round for a smaller cash reward.

As a rough guide for newer players: play the Small and Big Blind if your build is still coming together and you need the money and card draws, and start skipping more often once your engine is strong enough that the real risk in an Ante is the Boss Blind, not the two rounds before it.

FAQ

What happens if I lose to a Boss Blind?

Losing any Blind — including a Boss Blind — ends the run immediately. There's no extra life or retry within a run; you'll start a fresh run from Ante 1.

Can I skip a Boss Blind?

No. The Small and Big Blind can be skipped for a Tag reward, but the Boss Blind is mandatory every Ante — you have to beat it to advance.

How many different Boss Blinds are there?

There's a large roster of possible Boss Blind effects, with a subset reserved as tougher "Finisher" bosses that only appear at Ante 8. Which regular Boss Blind you face each Ante is randomized, so you won't see the same fixed sequence every run.

Is there a way to see what a Boss Blind does before I commit to a build?

Yes — the Boss Blind's name and effect are shown on screen before the round starts, and again once you're in it. Always read it before deciding how to spend your plays and discards that round.

Do Jokers that disable Boss Blind effects work on every boss?

Jokers that neutralize a Boss Blind's special effect work differently: Chicot passively disables every Boss Blind as long as you hold it (taking up a permanent slot), while Luchador must be sold during the Boss Blind for a one-time disable — freeing its slot after use. Most players save them for runs where the current Boss Blind would otherwise badly counter their build.
